Homophones
"Nasty, tricksy elf! Always using words poor Smeagol does not know! Poor, poor Smeagol! Why is it so cruel to us?!?"
Oh, by the sea and the stars! Would you please just wait for me to explain, ere you jump to conclusions?
"Don't blame Smeagol! It wasn't our fault! The Precious made us do--"
The precious did not make you do it. Everybody here knows that.
Now, homophones are words that sound the same, but are not the same word. (Homo-same/phone-sound. [Yes. It's Greek. Don't ask how an Elf from Middle-earth knows Greek. But I digress].)
Examples of homophones are
Two/too/to
Plain/plane
Toad/towed
Knew/new
And many others.
"Like what others, precious?"
It doesn't matter! I think the readers will get the idea. They're smart!
"But we doesn't understand! Tell us! Tell us!"
For the love of Valinor! How I wish I had not been so unfortunate as to become entrapped in this accursed place!
"CURSE IT! WE HATES THE NASTY, SKINNY ELF!!!!!! GOLLUM! GOLLUM!"
Alright, that's enough. Settle down.
"Then it will tell us?"
No.
"Then we won't talk to it!"
Good.
Now, the danger with using homophones it similar to the issue we addressed concerning contractions and possessives. You always should make sure that you have the WRITE word! Otherwise, you will look pretty silly later on.
ALRIGHT, WHO WROTE THAT!?!?!
"Don't ask Smeagol!!!!! Smeagol doesn't know!!!!!!!!"
