Chapter 5: Rewind
Jeremiah's POV
We were just kids when it happened.
Airplanes. Fire. Two years ago, the battle that devastated Crane Creek and its citizens. I relived it in my dreams far too often.
My squad, which was made up of Falcon Boy, Sekhmet, Celeste, and I squared off against members the villainous Solar Force: Cavalier, Dark Star, Agony, Atlas, and Vesuvius Wraith. Four of us versus five of them.
I looked at my friends nervously. Being the youngest and the rookie of the group, facing off with villains scared me more than it scared them. Falcon Boy smiled and took my hand reassuringly, and then we charged into combat.
All of us, together, for the very last time.
Utilizing my magnetism, I ripped a street sign from its place and hurled it at Vesuvius Wraith. It got his attention, and he shot jets of fire from his palms in my direction. I managed to dodge and retaliated with a bolt of electricity that sent my foe writhing to the ground.
Celeste and Dark Star were grappling and punching in midair, charging their blows with light and dark energy.
Sekhmet and Cavalier fought claw against sword. Sekhmet deflected most her rival's strikes with her armored gloves, but Cavalier got in close and quickly drew a dagger, stabbing Sekhmet in the neck and yanking the blade out with a violent twist.
"NO!" I screamed, sprinting towards them. Atlas jumped in front of me, grabbed my collar, and tossed me aside. I hit a nearby truck hard enough to dent it.
I was slipping out of consciousness. Desperate to save my friends, I put a hand to my chest and shocked myself.
Thoroughly energized, I ran back into the fight. Falcon Boy fell to the ground with a cry, hit by a spike of pain from Agony. I caught him and set him on the ground in an alley just in time for Vesuvius Wraith to blast him with a wave of white-hot flames. I leapt back just in time to avoid getting burned myself.
"Someone order roast chicken?" The pyro villain said with a sadistic laugh, prodding my best friend's charred body with the toe of his boot.
I yelled with uncontrollable rage, leaping at my nemesis and pummeling him for all I was worth. I electrified him repeatedly, and he set himself on fire.
I shrieked, punching Vesuvius Wraith in the jaw hard enough to shatter it.
I heard the roar of a plane overhead. My electromagnetic powers were unstable from my anger, and the jet came crashing downward. Celeste barely avoided being crushed by the quickly descending aircraft.
Panicking, I tried to lift the plane, but it was a thousand times too heavy. The best I could do was slow its fall by a fraction.
I watched helplessly as the plane lodged itself directly into the ground, right on top of Vesuvius Wraith.
I woke up just before sunrise, breathing heavily and completely drenched in sweat.
Isabelle's parents were aboard that plane. I'm certain of it. I killed more than two dozen people that day, including my nemesis.
Most of that memory was heart-rending. But some tiny part of me felt a bitter sense of satisfaction, because I killed Vesuvius Wraith. I avenged Falcon Boy's death.
