Chap. 31
The limo came to a stop, which I was thankful for, because it was really awkward and silent in here. Ever since I had my fight with Father, I hadn't really spoken to Nathalie either, and it didn't look like she wanted to talk to me as well. All throughout the ride, she had either been staring at the floor or out of the window. I couldn't care less, really, but I was a little upset that she seemed to be on Father's side rather than mine. I immediately hopped out of the limo after opening the door, not even bothering to mutter a goodbye. Nathalie closed the door behind me and I heard the limo driving off. They'd left without a word. I mean, Gorilla, I understood, because he barely spoke and he didn't like doing it either, but Nathalie, although not being too talkative, talked a lot in the limo, always reminding me of what I had for my schedule.
I remembered her telling me that I had to get back to work on Monday, but today, she had spoke nothing of it. She didn't remind me of the rules, nor explain everything to me like she usually did. I didn't know whether to be upset or glad; I didn't like not being talked to, nor did I like feeling like I was some sort of a bad child, but on the other hand, the break was really appreciated. Deciding not to think too much into it, I walked inside the school, eyes roaming around in search of a specific someone. After what had happened on Saturday, we had given Marinette a time to herself. Sunday afternoon though, was a lot of fun, because we all gathered together for a hang-out. Even Marinette had agreed to come out. I had even managed to grasp ahold of Marinette's phone number, and we texted last night for such a long time. I ended up going to bed at 3 AM, no matter how bad that sounded.
I came across Nathaniel, Alya and Nino, but neither of them had really seen Marinette. We started walking to class together, and when we entered, the first person my eyes landed on was Lila herself, already seated, but somehow looking uncomfortable. I ignored her and searched around the class again, but Marinette was nowhere to be seen. Deciding that she may have just been running late, I took my seat.
"Hey," Nino tapped me on the shoulder, before showing me his phone screen. "Marinette sent me a message. She says she's not going to be in school today, because she's feeling quite sick." I read the text message Marinette had sent, and even though she was saying it was because she felt sick, I knew it was just because she didn't want to see Lila's face. I didn't say a word though as I looked back at the teacher, class starting. It suddenly just felt so different to be in class without the usual Marinette sitting here with us.
"I hope your biographies are coming great and almost done, because you're supposed to hand that in on Wednesday. Two more days." Miss. Bustier reminded us after doing a quick attendance. "A few people have already handed theirs in, and can I say just how fantastic those people did. I hope the biographies the rest of you hand in will be just as amazing. I'm not going to call out any names, but I do hope you know who you are."
Crap! I mentally winced, remembering that my good-copy biography was still sitting in my room at home, unfinished. I had actually forgotten all about it because of all the drama that had happened in my life so far. I realized - before I had started school, I promised myself to stay a good boy and stay out of trouble, because it was the first ever school I was going, and I didn't want to make any mistakes. But I totally ended up doing just the opposite of that. I got stuck in a drama between two girls and watched a friendship break. I guess the good side of all this was that I made amazing friends while at it, and at the same time, also kind of. . .got myself a girlfriend? I shook my heard wildly, trying to focus on what Miss. Bustier was saying.
"Yes, I know," Miss. Bustier was saying, "you may think it's hard on you to receive another homework when the last one isn't even fully completed. It's only been the 6th day of school and you don't want too much work, but please no complaints. Other classes have actually started doing work, while I've been going quite easy on you, which is why you must do this, just so I know you're actually focusing in class. You are to write five pages based on any topic you wish to do, but just as long as the topic has got something to do with the book we've been reading. I hope you all remember the book."
I frowned. What book?
"No? No book?" Miss. Bustier stared at us for a second, before she face-palmed herself with a small grin. "Ah, silly me. That must have been the other class I was teaching. I'm sorry. It's only been the 6th day of school and I have three classes to teach, so it's quite hard to keep up with your names and class. The other class have started the book reading. You guys haven't. Hold on and sit tight." She started walking towards the door and when she reached to open it, the door opened up from the other side, Marinette walking in, breathless. "Marinette, you're quite late."
"I-I'm so sorry. I was feeling a little sick, but then I got better, and. . .yeah. . ." She didn't explain anymore as she walked over to her seat behind me, but not before she gave me a small smile, which I would be lying if I said it didn't make me blush.
"Ah, okay then," Miss. Bustier shrugged. "I'm going over to the office to get the books you students were supposed to start working on. Sit tight, students. Don't get too wild." We watched her leave and close the door behind her, before students completely did the absolute opposite of what she had just said. Paper airplanes started flying everywhere, almost everyone took out their phones and either started playing loud music, or playing mobile games with their volumes all the way up. Loud chatters were heard with loud laughers or whining. I rolled my eyes playfully, not sure whether to find this funny, or just straight up sad and annoying.
I turned my head and looked over at Marinette, who had her head hanging low. Obviously, she was still devastated over what had happened between her and Lila, and when I looked over at the other end of the room, I could see Lila's face buried into her palms, and I wasn't positive whether she was crying or not. I tapped Marinette on her shoulder, and when she looked up, I was glad she wasn't crying.
"Adrien, aren't you free of work for the rest of the week?" Nino reminded me, and I nodded. "How about we all spend time together for the entire week. You can even bring Felix along. He seems so cool." I nodded again, agreeing to bring Felix along.
"Just another reminder," I added as all of their eyes turned to me. "Today is Chloe's mother's wedding, which we promised to go to, and tomorrow is my aunt's wedding. It would be appreciated if you came alone. On Wednesday, we have to hand in our biographies. We could work on it together. After Wednesday, we're practically free to do whatever we want until Miss. Bustier hands us our next assignment." This week looked promising, and I couldn't help being just as excited as my friends as we talked about the different things we could do. When Miss Bustier came back with a box of books was when we finally quieted down.
"Alright, they're here." Miss Bustier placed the box of books down on her desk. "I decided to postpone the assignment to Thursday. On that day, everyone should already be done with their biographies and handed them in. On Thursday, I'll pass out these books to you, and what you're supposed to do is read the books according to how many chapters I assign each day, and then write three pages essay based on the chapters you read. The essays shouldn't take long at all, so I'll only give you up until the next day to complete them. I'll get into more details on Thursday. The books will also be handed to you on Thursday. All of them are the same. You better be able to catch on with the chapters we read each time, because if you don't complete your essays and hand them in, you will lost marks."
The way she looked at us showed us that she was absolutely serious. No one would dare to not complete their assignment, even those who didn't enjoy reading nor writing. I got out a piece of paper and started writing down things I was going to put down on my bio to finish it up. Although, sometimes I lost focus and started drawing random things instead, but I managed to get half of the page done when the bell finally rang. I breathed in and out, before turning my head and looking over at Lila. Seeing that she was looking back at me, I turned back around and started packing my stuff.
-
We were walking to the cafeteria when Marinette suddenly stopped. We turned back around to see who had stopped her only to see Lila grabbing ahold of her arm. "Lila, let go!" Marinette growled loudly, pushing Lila off with her other arm until Lila was able to let go.
"I need to talk to you, please!" She looked desperate; we could all see it in her eyes, but Marinette didn't seem to care at all as she turned away from Lila and started walking back towards to the cafeteria. Lila didn't give up, leaning in and grabbing Marinette's hand again. "Please Marinette, I need to talk to you!"
"Why? So you could lie to me again? I don't know you anymore, Lila. I don't want you around me anymore!" Slapping Lila's arm away one last time, Marinette stomped off. I've never seen her so angry. I've never seen her reject someone like this. Alya, Nino and Nathaniel followed her, but I couldn't help feeling that there really was something Lila wanted to say. Something that was important and didn't involve lying. Still, I turned away from her as well and followed the others.
"I'M MOVING AWAY FROM PARIS!!"
That, for some reason, got Marinette to stop, so Lila walked even closer. "Sine you won't let me tell you, I'll just shout it out then, Marinette. I'm moving from Paris tomorrow. My mother and I have made the plans and all. We're just here now for Audrey's wedding before leaving. I just felt like it was right to tell you why I did that before I leave, because if I don't. . .if I don't get your words that everything is okay between us, I'm going to continue to live with this guilt for the rest of my life. Today is the only chance I have left to make things up to you by at least explaining to you why I did it. All of you." She looked at each of us with pleading eyes, waiting for us to say something. But none of us did, just looking at each other, waiting for the other to speak first.
"I don't feel comfortable with talking while so many people are staring at us." Lila walked past us as she spoke. "If you're interested, meet me at the back of the school." With those last words, Lila walked out of the school.
"I guess it wouldn't hurt to know why she did it," Alya shrugged, but looking unsure. "Then again, she could lie to us, which would totally suck. Whatever Marinette says, we'll do."
We all turned to Marinette, who looked unsure herself. She looked at the floor, as if expecting it to answer for her. After a few seconds, she looked back up. "Forget it. Let's just go eat."
