Slow Dance; A Bdoc Oneshot
Bdubs fumbled with his suit jacket as he looked around the ballroom. The idea of going to a party at Grian's mansion seemed like fun in theory, but now that he's here, he feels out of place. Yes, he saw on the invitation it was a formal event, (most likely Mumbo's idea) but seeing everyone here made Bdubs worry he didn't dress nice enough. Maybe I should've left my bandana at home, or tried to comb my hair down. These negative thoughts kept creeping up on him, but the builder did his best to shake them off. No, I'm perfectly fine. No one is going to think I look bad. He thought defiantly. Looking between the dance floor and the snack table, Bdubs decided it would be best to go for food first, and headed straight for the golden carrots.
As he munched on food, Bdubs stared at the dance floor. I should just go dance. I'm a fun guy, right? Fun guy who's fun-sized. Exhaling sharply, he put on a cheery face and was ready to dance. However, as soon as he approached the dance floor, the upbeat music faded away. Bdubs looked at Beef, who was saying something to Wels on drums. The knight gave a slower beat, and Beef followed, playing a light, soft and slow tune on the piano. The builder looked around and watched as couples started dancing. Grian was going on and on as he danced with Mumbo, who in return appeared to say something small, but it was enough to get the blondie to shut up and smile. If I walk away now, I'll just look silly! Bdubs thought worriedly as Iskall and Stress started dancing as well. But just standing here won't do me any good. Once they joined the dancing, Cub leaned his head down on Scar's shoulder. Maybe I could ask Doc? But how could I make it sound like a friend thing and not an I-really-like-you-please-dance-with-me thing? As he contemplated his decision, someone tapped his shoulder. Turning around, he was surprised to be facing Doc himself. Looking down, he saw the hybrid had extended his robotic arm. "Wanna dance?"
"I..." Bdubs was so dumbfounded, he couldn't make out a response.
"Don't worry, it'll just be a friend thing," Doc reassured him, playfully nudging Bdubs' arm with his shoulder.
"Sure," he responded, trying not to show his disappointment. This is what you wanted. You know he doesn't really like you. He reminded himself as he was led onto the dance floor. That still didn't stop him from turning a light shade of pink when Doc placed a hand on his waist. Bdubs found it hard to make eye-contact with him and lightly placed his hand on the hybrid's shoulder.
"Wels and Beef are great musicians," Doc pointed out. You can have a nice conversation with your friend, no need to get so nervous. Bdubs scolded himself.
"Yeah, they really seem to complement each other," he said, looking over at the music artists. He caught a glimpse of Cub and Scar, secretly wishing he could be that close with Doc.
"Something wrong? You look a little sad," the hybrid asked, concerned. Still a little lost in his head, Bdubs blurted out,
"I like you, Doc," as soon as that slipped out, he stared at Doc, his heart jumping to a million miles an hour. "Y-You know, as a friend and all! You're a great friend!" he quickly added, laughing awkwardly.
"Bdubs..." he spoke softly and leaned close to the nervous brunette. All Bdubs could do was just stare, unsure what to say. Every part of him was screaming at him to just make a run for it, leave the mansion, the party, his crush, and never return. But then Doc kissed him, and he suddenly wanted to stay forever. The hybrid let go of Bdubs' hand, wrapping both around his waist. "I like you too," he whispered into his ear. The builder hugged Doc's shoulders, his smile wide as tears built up in his eyes.
As much as Bdubs wished they could've stayed like that forever, the song eventually had to stop. As Beef and Wels announced they were going to take a short break, Doc pulled away. "Want to go talk somewhere?" he asked quietly. Bdubs nodded, and the two snuck away from the rest of the party. The hybrid climbed out an open window, and held out his hand, helping Bdubs through it as well. Moving quietly in the dark, they managed to find a nice, grassy spot behind one of the waterfalls and sat in the corner. Light danced across their faces from the lights in the water. For a little, they said nothing and just sat there watching the waterfall from behind, resting their heads on one another and holding hands.
"I'm in love with you, Doc," Bdubs finally broke the silence, speaking just loud enough to be heard over the waterfall, but not too loud for anyone else to hear. "I have been for a stupidly long time,"
"I love you too, Bdubs," Doc kissed the top of his head, squeezing his hand.
"I kinda always thought you just tolerated me and was being my friend to be nice. I mean, I wasn't the best neighbor at the beginning of the season and stuff. Not to mention we really haven't been hanging out," Bdubs admitted.
"Are you kidding me? Bdubs I always liked you. Even when you blew up the G.O.A.T head, you helped me fix it. There was never a time when I didn't like you," Doc held the builder's cheek with his free hand, lifting his head so they made eye contact.
"Do you think we could hang out sometime soon?" Bdubs quietly asked.
"I'm free all weekend," the hybrid smiled, kissing him as they locked hands.
The sound of a shrieking phantom alerted Bdubs, causing him to jump. He scooted back a little and tried to see if he could spot one through the rushing water. Doc scooched to his side, and wrapped his arms around Bdubs, giving a comforting squeeze. Another shriek made the scared hermit turn and bury his face in Doc's chest.
Eventually, the two hermits drifted off into sleep behind the waterfall, Bdubs laying on Doc's chest, with one of the hybrid's arm holding him close.
