Maybe this isn't so Bad

I was quite frustrated with my brother.
Well, that's not true, I was angry at myself, I wanted so badly to gain his trust, for him to accept me. To have the dream family I always wanted. And I was so happy when I met him, he was so perfect. Even if he was blind, I could live with that. I had been living with my blind owner for the past year, I was used to it.
But, then he yelled at me, and it hurt. I hated that feeling, it wasn't right.
Jay groaned audibly from his place in the small tunnel we had found. He had been unconscious for a good while after we found him, which wasn't hard. Zach had picked up on a little bit of medical knowlege from Jay rambling, but even between the two of us we didn't really know what to do so we just found some shelter and waited for him to wake up. Zach explained how the quest started when he went to look for his twin, it made me envious. I wanted to share a bond that strong with a brother or sister all my life. But I guess I never realized you can't force someone to like you.
His eyes slid open, the haunting view of missing pupils sending chills down my spine.
"Have you been watching me sleep this entire time?" He accused snarkily, sitting up and shaking some dew from his pelt and wings. Jay proceeded to stretch out a wing and clean it thoroughly in blunt attempt to embarrass me further.
"No." I replied, my brow furrowing. "I just..."
"You just what?" He snapped.
I shut my mouth and almost growled. My dreams of trying to reconnect going up in flames.
His ear dropped back and he sighed. "Look, Jelu. I'm sorry I yelled at you, I'm a huge grump sometimes, just ask my friends. But I don't mean half the things I say."
"Apology accepted." I replied back lightly, still not satisfied, I wanted to ask him something.
Jay somehow gave me a long judging glare. "Where's Zach?"
"He didn't know when you would wake up, he went hunting. Is it really true you eat raw animals?" It was another question, but not the one that was bothering me.
"Well no, usually we can cook them but seeing we have no Magycian, raw will have to do."
"Okay."
Jay started washing his fur to break the awkward silence, but there was still something bothering me.
"Glamora above, spit it out Jelu! I know something up."
I swallowed dryly. My throat felt like a slide of sandpaper. "Our parents, are they really dead?"
He winced and turned his head. "I shouldn't have snapped at you."
"Are they dead Jay? Please tell me, I need to know." I pleaded, forcing down the wave of emotion.
"Yes." He said in a flat tone of voice.
I made a strangled sound, and leaned against one of the slopes mahogany tunnel walls of the rabbit burrow. It was cold and darker now. And the world seemed to be loose and spinning, not violently, but enough to make me feel like I had lost purchase on the very earth itself.
"Jelu?" He asked, turning towards me with uncertainty in his voice.
I didn't answer him. I had sworn that I had seen them. They had been so real, they talked to me, hugged me, explained everything.
"B-but I saw them!" I shrieked.
"You saw their spirits Jelu, once a claw dies their spirit goes to live in Glamora. Meðal-claws like me sometimes receive prophecies from Glamora, but I don't see them very much."
His voice was soft and quiet and I took a deep shaky breath.
"How did..." I chocked. "How did they die?"
Jay padded over and sat down, wrapping a wing around my back. For some reason he was taller than me.
"They died fighting in a war of jealousy, protecting my life, fighting for yours."
I was crying, I realized, I don't know when I started, but my fur was wet now. And the tears splashed down to the hard cold earth.
He laughed dryly. "Don't you dare tell anyone this, but I got so angry at them. After I became blind, I had virtually no one, besides Zara, she's Zach sister. She was the only real friend I had."
"I know, Zach told me."
"Well... Wait how much did he tell you?"
I glanced up at him questioningly, he had his poker face on and I couldn't read him.
"Wait a second..." I realized.
His eyes widened. "Haha, whatever you're thinking, it's not true."
"Uh huh, right." I grinned, he obviously liked this girl. This was almost like one of the tv shows my owner used to put on.
He grinned. "You know, you're not that bad, for a little brother."
"Hey! Technically I'm older." I protested.
"In your dreams little brother." He patted my back earnestly.
"Hey wait a second, you don't have any wings."
I shrugged, glancing at his blue ones.
"The Curse of Moon! Great Glamora I almost forgot. You born too early for the prophecy, and it must have been under a full Blood Moon, but that's okay, because all the Great Beast have to the power to summon a pair of wings. Can you?"
"To be honest I've never tried." I admitted.
He laughed again. "Well you won't get anywhere by just sitting on your tail all day! Think about flying or something."
I rolled my eyes at him and shut my eyelids. I imagined leaping off a cliff and spreading a pair of beautiful grey wings, the feathers dancing along the air currents and pulling me along. I could trust the wings, they wouldn't fail me.
"Anything?" I asked hopefully.
"I definitely see something!" He exclaimed.
"Really?" I gasped, opening my eyes. "Oh wait..."
"Pfffffft. Everyone falls for that don't worry little brother."
"I'm still older than you." I sang.
"Hey Zach." Jay announced suddenly, seconds later Zach came squeezing through the entrance. A huge rabbit was hanging from his jaws.
"Hey guys, ready to go?" He asked after dropping it.
"Woah that thing is ginormous!" I exclaimed.
He grinned. "That's hilarious, nice wings Jelu."
I turned and woe and behold, on my back was a fancy pair a clear blue wings.
"Woah..." I marveled, flapping them and jumping around.
"You'll be up in the air in no time!" Zach cracked a grin.
"Flying is easy Jelu, just follow my instructions." Suka's calm voice guided me, resonating through my thoughts like a strong wind.
"It's all about the angle, keep them straight, you fly evenly, tip them forwards, you go down, tip them backwards, you go up. The steepness of the angle decides how fast you drop or rise. Angling them backwards all the way, very quickly, is the equivalence of braking."
I saw a documentary on birds once, it didn't look that hard.
About an hour later I was up in the flying like a novice. It was a long overdue lesson. I was half scared to death to be honest, and had to be reminded several times not to lock up my wings or else I would fall.
We landed on the mountainside, and I was introduced to several ranges animals. None of which I recognized, but it was clear that they were very happy that the four of us were collected and in one space at last. I learned that in order for the next step to be complete they needed all four of us.
"Are you ready to be part of the team, Jelu?" Feurige asked, as we stared forward at the illegible writing on the cave wall.
Tu iter nostrum exemplum bene, suscipiat in nostra scientia.
The letters rearranged themselves, which I was kind of freaked out about, but nobody else freaked so I figured it was normal.
"You've headed our warning well, welcome to our place of knowledge." Feurige said aloud.
A red, blue, and white paw print, plus a green hoof, appeared in place of the letters.
Then the cave wall cracked and slid apart, grinding against the cave floor.
We all gasped.
