A stroke of luck

The door chimes jingled and I whirled around with a bright smile before bowing. "Welcome!"

A very colorful couple walked in with wide eyes marveling at me instead of the flowers. I gulped, growing self conscious. Was I that badly dressed? I was exhausted from my work that I just threw my hair up in a ponytail and wore a comfy sweater under my apron. Was my makeup visible enough?

The man had red- no, kind of maroon hair and a darker shade of freckles across his youthful face. The woman had a blue colored hair like the deep ocean and tanner skin than the man but was as tall as him. Maybe she was his older sister. She had an intimidating aura while he seemed very playful from the way his big eyes sparkled and lips curled up.

I gulped once again when they came up to me and stood so tall before my nervous self under scrutiny. What was the police's number again?

"Hello," the man said in a cheerful tone. A peculiar accent. A quite deep voice I was not expecting.

"Hello, sir," I addressed because of the deep tone.

"Hi," the woman said and smiled slightly. "What's the most popular bouquet here?"

"Uh... Red and pink roses with baby's breath. Ma'am."

"Great! I'll buy it!"

"Right away, ma'am."

I fumbled around and wrapped a new bouquet after a series of q and a session about her preferences. All the while they were watching me with over the top curiosity. They were blatantly staring at me and I nearly cut my fingers with scissors in the process. Was there something wrong with me? They were whispering among themselves and sometimes even giggled after glancing at me.

"Here you go, ma'am." I quickly handed her the bouquet and she gasped.

"It's so beautiful! How much is it?"

She paid in cash and suddenly initiated a conversation. "Is business doing well? It must be hard taking care of all these flowers. You're so hardworking."

I blushed. Such a gorgeous woman complimenting me?! "No, I'm just doing what I should to pay the bills. But I mean, I like my flowers, too. Luckily, people do, too, so it's selling well."

I must had imagined it but... the man's eyes suddenly shined a darker shade of red for a brief moment before fading into black as he stared at me. How could that be possible? Was I too stressed from work that I was hallucinating now?

My heart jumped to my throat when my phone suddenly vibrated on the counter. It was from an unknown number and I assumed it was a customer placing order. I excused myself to the couple and took the call.

"Hello? Is this Bloom Lei?"

I widened my eyes. "Yes?"

"I'm calling from JL Retail human resource as per your application to ask if you're interested in the manager's position in the Marketing Department."

I gasped internally and my jaw dropped. JL Retail? Manager? Yes yes yes!

"Yes! I would be happy to! I'm available anytime!"

"Great! Then please come to the central office on the 9th of Monday at 9 am. You will start working next month. Is that alright with you?"

"Of course. I'll be there!"

The call ended and I clutched my chest in disbelief. I got an amazing job at one of the top companies! An opportunity, blessing from above! A stroke of luck!

Wait... I should quit my current job before that...

"Meh, I have enough time before that. It should be fine."

I turned around to find that the colorful couple was watching me the whole time. What weird people... Did they still have business with me?

I gave a token smile. "Can I do anything else for you?"

"No, thank you. Congratulations on your job opportunity," the man said, smiling angelically and my heart may had skipped a beat.

"T-Thank you, sir." Did I just stutter?!

"Goodbye," they said and walked out of the shop. Strange strange people.

But gorgeous.

But that was not important. I finally got a high position job at last and a career opportunity. JL Retail was not easy to enter and definitely not easy to stay if you did not work hard enough.

I clenched my fists and took a deep breath. I was born for this. My future was bright now.
