Chapter 5

Two weeks after Krista was taken in by the SSI, she was still questioning her decision. Sure, she was learning new things about herself, and the world, everyday but she kind of missed her boring old life... Sometimes.

"Just focus on the vibration of every molecule," Sam whispered as Krista allowed her eyes to close. "Imagine them moving, expanding the space between each one."

Krista took a deep breath. She could feel her body expanding as the billions of particles which composed her body moved quicker than before.

"Impressive, Krista. Your mastery over your ability has developed much quicker than I assumed it would."

As Krista snapped out of her meditation, she could see the last of her molecules coming back into place. "I, uh... Don't know what to say. This place has been... Fantastic..."

"It is exceedingly rare for individuals to dislike their experience with SSI."

"So... When am I gonna see some real field time?"

"Sam!" Missy burst into the room with a huge smile. "Rosa just checked in, I think we finally found him!"

"Found who?" Krista asked but Sam just smiled. It wasn't a regular smile, but Krista had become accustomed to the strange expressions he made.

"How about that field time?" He asked.

"What?" Missy crossed her arms. "You can't possibly be sending her out, not now."

"If not now, then when?"

"When she has more control."

Krista stood up and glared at the other woman. "I've got plenty of control!"

"She truly does." Sam's long, oddly jointed legs brought him to the door on the far side of the room and he turned to Missy. "Besides, you'll be there to help her maintain her calm."

"What?" Krista shook her head. "No way!"

"Do you honestly think I would send you out on your own? This is your first case."

Missy shook her head and turned away from Krista. "Look, noob, I'm outta here in fifteen whether you're with me or not."

Both Missy and Sam left and Krista only took a moment to decide who she'd follow. "Wait! Missy?" She stood up and chased after the woman. "I'm coming with you!"

"Put this in your ear." Missy handed an ear piece to Krista.

"What's this?"

"It'll help you stay in touch with us, you know, in case we get separated."

"Cool, um... Where are we going anyway?" Krista slipped the earpiece into place as Missy opened the door.

"To retrieve Dr. Gregor."

"Dr. Gregor... That sounds familiar."

"He's been all over the news." Missy led the way through the door and into the streets of Krista's home town. "He's an OB-GYN. Delivered an indestructible baby about three months ago. The child and his mother have been under our protection since then. We believe Gregor has been kidnapped by a witch."

"A witch?" Krista cocked a brow as they travelled through the busy city streets.

"Everything you've experienced and you're going to question the existence of witches?"

"I guess you're right... So you think this witch kidnapped Gregor because of the baby?"

"We haven't been able to uncover any other sort of motive."

"So... What does she want with him?"

Missy stopped in front of an old house which didn't quite fit in with its surroundings. "Who said the witch is female?"

Krista scrunched her eyebrows and stumbled over her words as she tried to explain herself. "I just... I mean when you think witch, you tend to think... I mean I don't know anything about this stuff but... Uh..."

"Thank God you guys are finally here!" Rosa smiled and wrapped her arms around the two of them from behind. Krista was glad for the change of subject.

"So, this is it?" Missy examined the out-of-place building. "You think Maximoff put this house here himself? It doesn't quite fit with the urban architecture."

"Pretty sure he even cloaked it. I've been watching for hours and nobody seems to notice it."

"So why do we see it then?" Krista asked and Rosa smiled as if it were obvious.

"We're not like them." Missy gestured to the general population of the sidewalk. "They're boring, simple minded. They have been trained to ignore the paranormal."

"Hey, Krista, I was wondering if you'd like to try out your ability?" Rosa smiled. "You wanna check out the inside? Make sure the coast is clear before we head in?"

"It would be my pleasure." Krista smiled as she turned towards the house. As she cleared her mind she felt the molecules of her body vibrate faster and faster as they separated from each other. They blew in a wind that didn't actually exist towards the house and slipped in through cracks around the door and windows.

As Krista expanded her presence throughout the building, she knew that there were two men inside. Something didn't seem quite right though. When Krista was sure there was nobody else in the house, she reformed her body beside the others and stared at them.

"I thought you said Gregor was kidnapped?"

"He was." Missy shifted her weight to one leg.

"So then why are they sitting down for a pleasant cup of tea together?"

Rosa and Missy looked at each other and Rosa shrugged. "It wouldn't be the first time I misinterpreted a message from my higher self."

"Well, let's figure this out then?" Missy took off down the front walk. She climbed the stoop and Krista quickly caught up with her.

"Wait a second! You're just going to waltz up there and, what, knock on the front door?"

As Missy did just that, she said, "do you have a better plan?"

When a scruffy man squeaked the door open, Missy smiled at him. Krista recognized the look on the man's face as one of forced peacefulness.

"Max, it's nice to see you again."

"Missy, Rosa." The man nodded his head, then his eyes fell on Krista. "Uh..."

"This is Krista." Rosa smiled.

"Can we come in?" Missy asked and Max seemed uneasy with the idea.

"I don't think so. Maybe you ladies could come back another time." As Max began to close the door, Missy slammed her hand against it and stared hard at him.

"You know better than to turn me away, Maximoff. Where's Gregor?"

"I'm sorry, who?"

"We both know you're lying." Rosa was clearly the good cop, Krista thought. "Just let us come in, we can help."

"You don't know nothin'!"

"Max, you're going to step aside and let the three of us in." Missy's nose began to bleed as Max struggled with her order.

"No, no, no!" Max started groping at his skin. "Get your freaky light away from me, you can't control me!"

"Luckily, I don't have to." Missy looked at Krista. "Our new friend here is an expert at getting into places."

Krista nodded and burst apart, reforming behind Max who let out a shocked scream.

"Come on, Max is it? Just move aside and let my friends in, cause if you don't, I'll just tear your place apart." Krista extended her right arm and it disappeared. Her hand materialized by the window and knocked over a vase before returning to her body.

"That's how you threaten me?" Max scoffed. "Do you know who you're dealing with?"

"Uh... No... Not really." Krista shrugged as Max looked toward the floor. He began to whisper under his breath and the entire house started to shake.

"Stop that!" Missy stomped her foot and a torrent of blood escaped her nose, splattering across the floor. Her right ear began to seep the thick red liquid as well and Max stopped his spell just as Krista saw a blood vessel pop in Missy's eye. "Now, let us in!"

Max stepped aside and Missy fell into Rosa's arms. Rosa seemed unfazed by the incident, so Krista followed her lead, despite the fact that on the inside she was raked with fear.

"Oh come on, noob." Missy struggled to speak clearly. "Keep it together."

Krista was filled with Missy's calm as Max led all three women to the dining room.

"Where's the doctor?" Missy asked as Rosa helped her sit.

"Upstairs." Max's voice was flat and even, his eyes void of emotion.

"Max?" Another man's voice came from behind them and Krista watched as the older doctor rushed to the witch's side. "Is he okay? What did you do to him?"

Rosa and Missy stared at the men as Dr. Gregor put his arms around his supposed captor.

"So... I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say... You weren't kidnapped by this guy?" Krista found her voice as she watched her friends struggle for their own.

"Kidnapped? Good God no! Why would Max kidnap me?"

"We thought... We thought it had something to do with Brodie," Rosa said.

Gregor let loose a cold laugh. "You two are just so self centred. Everything has to be an investigation for you! Why couldn't you just leave us alone?"

"Just what is going on--" Krista started to ask but Missy interrupted her.

"You two are in love?" Her pink hair bounced as she shook her head.

"H--... How do you know?" Gregor's old eyes were sad as he looked from Missy to Rosa to Krista, then back at Missy again.

"I read auras." Missy waved away the question. "You can't hide shit from me. Your auras are like, burning with love."

"We did meet after Brodie was born... Max came to me for information but I refused to give it to him. He was pretty charming though... I've never been attracted to a man before but there's just something about him." Gregor put a gentle hand on Max's skinny chin and smiled.

"Doc, you're married." Missy crossed her arms.

"Hence the secrecy. My marriage has been dead for years. Max is the first person who... Made me feel alive."

Rosa began to shake her head, Krista could tell she wasn't buying the man's story.

"Well, this was a bloody waste of time." Missy smeared the red from her nose and looked at it. "Literally."

Max suddenly fell limp and the doctor hastily struggled to support his weight.

"What... Oh no." Max looked around and began to tear up. He looked into his lover's eyes and began to cry. "I'm so sorry, I tried to stop them but that bitch is too strong."

"Not to worry, Max." Missy motioned for Krista and Rosa to follow her to the door. "Your secret's safe with us."

Gregor smiled and nodded at Missy, then turned to Max.

"Seriously? We're just gonna leave? Just like that?" Krista chased after Missy, who already seemed to be recovering. "You don't believe these shit heads do you?"

"She's got a point, Missy. Something's up here, I can feel it."

"Look, there's nothing going on here. Despite Max's powers, this is not a case for the SSI." Missy opened the door and turned back to the two men. "I'm real sorry for the interruption."

Dr. Gregor smiled back at Missy as she led Krista and Rosa back out onto the street. Krista caught one last glimpse of the two men as they embraced. They did seem genuine enough...

"Missy, I don't like this. It's gotta be some kinda trick." Rosa kept pushing but Missy dismissed it.

"Look, you couldn't see what I could. Those two are in love."

"Max is a witch, isn't he?" Krista asked, "couldn't he have... I don't know, cast a spell on the doctor?"

"There is no spell that can create love that strong." Missy sounded like she was getting impatient now. "That was pure."

"I might not be able to see their auras, but there are things I know that you don't!" Rosa stomped her foot. "I wanna go back there! Ask them more questions."

"They love each other and they just want to be left alone." Missy's angry tone now matched Rosa's and Krista felt an over powering feeling of rage coming off her. "We're in the business of paranormal investigation, not outing people. If they want their secret homo love nest, so be it. I for one am not going to intervene, and that means neither of you will either."

"But--"

"But nothing, Rosa! It's done. We cracked the case. Your ability isn't always easy to interpret, you said so yourself, but mine is. It's a little weird, but those two guys are in love, leave it be." With that, Missy walked away, leaving Krista and Rosa to stare at each other with empty gazes.

"Is she always so bossy?" Krista asked.

"She is the boss."

"I thought Sam was."

"Sam is more of an advisor. He teaches us things, but he lets Missy call the shots."

"Oh... Um... Speaking of Sam..."

"You wanna know why he looks the way he does." Rosa said it as a statement, rather than a question.

"Um... Yeah, I guess."

"He doesn't like us talking about it. Top secret, you know. Maybe you should ask him sometime. He probably owes you that much after asking you to trust him so blindly."

Krista stared at Rosa, then smirked. "I may not be clairvoyant or anything, but I don't need to be to pick up on your tense vibes."

"I'm not clairvoyant either, I'm claircognizant. There's a difference. I don't see things, I know things."

"Sure, what ever." Krista knew that Rosa was trying to change the subject, but she wouldn't let it happen. "Where does he go all the time anyway?"

"Sam?"

"Isn't that who we've been talking about?"

Rosa turned in the direction of their headquarters with a sigh. "You don't think you're his only glowing protege do you?"

"I... I don't know... I guess I did, actually."

"He trains all kinds of people, but right now he's only focussing on two of you."

"So... Who's the second 'glowing protege'?"

"I have the feeling you'll find out soon." With that, Rosa brought the conversation to an end as she led the way home.
