Chapter 4
Krista stared at the pink haired woman and flashes of her dreadful night with Martu came rushing back to her.
"You... You were there that night!"
"Yeah, and what I saw was pretty incredible."
Krista felt the sudden urge to run, but as Rosa closed the door it disappeared. "What's going on here?" The pit of Krista's stomach felt heavy. Her organs squeezed together as she withdrew into herself.
"I was looking for the time traveller, not you." The pink haired woman said as she stepped towards Krista.
"Why are you guys getting taller? Let me go! I changed my mind! I wanna go home!"
"We're not getting taller," Rosa said, "you're getting shorter."
The two women stood in front of Krista and she had to strain her neck to look up at them.
"It's probably a defence mechanism," the pink haired woman said, "give me your hand."
"No!" Krista's hand split apart and disappeared as the other woman reached for it.
"Just stay calm, okay?" The woman rolled her eyes and Krista's panic receded. "Now, give me your hand."
Against her will, Krista extended her hand for the woman and in an instant she felt herself regaining her usual height. Her fear and anger were becoming distant as she became aware of a cloud of contentment falling over her.
"Who are you?" Krista asked through her artificial calm.
"I'm Missy."
"Your nose is bleeding."
"Yeah, it does that." Missy turned away and braced herself against the nearest table.
"Where is Sam, anyway?" Rosa asked and Missy shrugged.
"You know him, he doesn't like to show himself to new comers."
"Who's Sam?" Krista still felt unnaturally calm.
"He's going to have to come out sooner or later." Rosa's hands found her hips. "How are we supposed to understand Krista's abilities without him?"
"You know he wants us to start figuring this stuff out on our own."
"But he's so good at it."
"And we should be better than we are." Missy's voice sounded angry, but Krista couldn't figure out why. She couldn't see any reason to be upset, not anymore.
"Fine, we'll do this on our own." Rosa reached for a notebook as Missy cleaned the blood off her face.
"What are you doing?" Krista asked with a dreamy smile.
"She's ghost writing." Missy took Krista aside and sat her at a shining silver table.
"What's ghost writing?"
"We're hear to talk about you, Krista. Don't you feel like talking about yourself?"
She did. "What do you want to know?"
"When I saw you first, with the time traveller--"
"Time traveller? You said that before..."
"We're talking about you, remember?" Missy reminded Krista and she nodded. "He was attacking you, but you got away."
Krista knew that thinking about that night should induce more anxiety than what she was feeling, but it didn't bother her. "Yeah, thank God. When I saw you, I couldn't help but think how beautiful your hair was."
"Yeah, yeah. Look, the way you got away from him was... Unique."
Krista laughed. "You mean weird."
"I don't like that word." Missy gritted her teeth but Krista didn't pick up on the woman's discomfort. All she knew was that she was talking about herself and for some reason that felt right. "Do you remember what you did?"
"I just... Wanted to get away. I wanted to be safe. The next thing I knew, I was sliding down trash mountain with the rats."
"So you don't remember what you did? You don't remember... Blowing away?"
"Nope."
Missy sucked her teeth and took a deep breath. "What about just a second ago, when you shrunk to the size of a six year old. Do you remember that?"
"Of course."
"Was it the first time you've done that?"
"I don't think so... The day I first met Rosa I woke up that small."
"How were you feeling that day?"
"Well, I was almost raped the night before." Why was she talking so calmly about it? "I was feeling... Withdrawn, angry, sad... Scared."
"Scared, just like you were the night before when you blew away, just like earlier when you recognized me and shrunk again."
"Yeah... I was scared... Does that have something to do with it?"
"Most definitely. Fear is often times the most important driving factor behind the manifestation of abilities like ours."
"Ours? Do you have an ability too?"
"Why do you think you haven't run out of here screaming?"
"I... Don't know."
"Because I'm keeping you calm. If I wanted to make you scared, it would be as simple as..." Missy looked Krista in the eyes and she felt her panic returning. In fact, it was growing to be worse than before.
"You guys are fucked! You're fucked! I'm getting outta here!" Before Krista could stand up, she felt her body split apart. Every cell, every molecule broke off in its own unique direction and she filled the room.
"Interesting..." Rosa looked up from her writing and Krista saw the woman from every direction. "Where did she go?"
The room no longer held any secrets for Krista. She could see every dark corner, behind every piece of advanced looking technology.
"She's still here." Missy spun around. "I can see her aura all over the room, she's everywhere..."
"How is that possible?" Rosa asked. Krista noticed Rosa's hand dragging across the paper, entirely out of her control. She looked down and began reading the words out loud "The calm before the storm. Chemistry. Everything is equal to the sum of all its parts."
"What does that mean?" Krista asked and felt her face pulling together. Her lips formed in a flurry of particles, followed by the rest of her body.
"I don't know, but I wanna find out!" Missy turned on Krista and Krista felt her fear escalating again. She reached her arm towards Missy and it disintegrated. She could see the molecules of her arm wrap around Missy and fling her into the air.
"Krista, stop!" Rosa screamed.
"Make her stop first!" Krista screamed as her other arm shot forward. It too disintegrated and its particles joined those of her first arm. They spun around Missy as she struggled to be set free of the organic storm.
"Missy, just stop making her scared!"
"Are you kidding me? This is fucking awesome!"
"No, it's not!" Krista screamed and as she thought about Missy falling to the floor, she did.
"What a rush!" Missy was on her feet again. She was staring intently at Krista, who felt like a field mouse in the gaze of a hungry hawk.
"Is that what I am to you? A rush? Some kind of toy for the supernatural investigation squad?"
Missy was lifted into the air again and she laughed.
"Missy, just make her calm down!"
"Artemis!" A voice boomed and the three women grew quiet. "End this experiment, now!"
Missy sighed and Krista began to return to her relaxed state. She instantly regretted her actions as her arms fitted themselves back into place.
"Who was that?" Krista asked.
"Sorry, Sam." Rosa looked down.
Missy stood up and rolled her eyes. "What ever, you told me to handle it, I was handling it."
"If this is your definition of 'handling it,' Artemis, then I deeply regret putting you in charge."
"Where are you?" Krista asked, checking over her shoulder and spinning around.
"Worry not, young Krista, I am here." There was the sound of claws clinking against the steel floor. Krista turned around and screamed as the monster known as Sam bared down on her. His catfish face pulled back into the shadows and Missy stepped up to calm her.
"Heck of a first day, huh?" Rosa smiled as Krista's eyes grew heavy. "Tired? Don't worry about it, we'll debrief later."
Krista tried to speak but every muscle in her body was exhausted. She stared at Sam's slimy looking whiskers and his three fingered hands as she drifted off into a sleep forced onto to her by Missy.
