Chapter 49

Patton giggled a little, dancing around in front of the darkened window that acted as his mirror.

"Knock, knock?" Came from his doorway. "Can I come in?"

Patton grinned. "Whatcha think, Em?" He asked, spinning around. Emile shrugged.

"You look posh." He said. "In a good way."

"But do I look cute?" Patton asked. Emile blinked a couple of times.

"I think your long line of past boyfriends should answer that question." Emile said. "But all I can say is that this Logan isn't going to be able to keep his eyes off you."

Patton giggled in excitement again, twisting this way and that in front of the window. "As he should." He said. He played with the curls at the bottom of his neck, a tell of when he was nervous.

"You okay, Patton?" Emile asked, leaning his head against the doorframe.

"Yeah, I'm fine." Patton said.

"Anything you want to talk about?" Emile asked. Patton shrugged, hugging his elbows.

"Just it's the last night of the ball." He said. "What if I never see Logan again?"

"If he's as smitten with you as you are with him-"

"Hey!" Patton protested. "I am not smitten!"

Emile raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything on the subject. "If he is, as you say, smitten with you, one of you will seek the other out in time. You'll see him again, is what I'm saying." He grinned at Patton and nodded his head out of the door. "Now go on, the night's practically over with all your prancing about in the window."

Patton hummed a little tune as he walked past the fancy houses near the palace. Virgil lived down here, Patton remembered going to his house to fix one of the horses' shoes when he was five or six. Virgil must've been about six or seven at the time but Patton couldn't remember ever seeing him.

Voices floated down from the Summer residence and Patton stopped. He recognised Virgil's voice - panicked as always - but there was another voice of someone he didn't know.

"I know everyone in town." He thought. "So who's that?"

Curious, Patton crept down the drive, towards the voices.

"- insane?!" Virgil was yelling. "If Edin and Thalia-"

"See you, they'll kill you, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know." The other person said sarcastically. "But you look awesome."

"I look like an idiot." Virgil grumbled.

Patton couldn't help but agree, covering his mouth with his hand to stop the giggles.

"It's just a dress." The other person said, drawing Patton's attention. Patton blinked a couple of times and rubbed his eyes under his glasses.

No, the other person really was floating in mid-air.

"It was just a dress last time and I hated it." Virgil said. He picked up one of the many layers of skirts and shook them in anger. "When will you learn that I don't look good in dresses?! Or poofs?!"

The other person groaned. "Fine. I'll give you a stupid coat." They rolled their eyes and pulled a stick out of thin air. The tapped in Virgil's direction and a flurry of gold sparkles flew out of it and engulphed Virgil.

Holy shit, it was a wand! This person was magic!

Patton's mouth fell open and he hid behind the wall. He tried to slow down his breathing, putting a hand over his chest. Virgil was friends with a person who could do magic. Were they even a person? Were they even human?! Patton couldn't believe what he'd just seen.

Going a little off-script here but I don't care, honestly.
Bye,
Blaize
