Chapter 42

Virgil looked up as the clock chimed.

"Do you need to leave again?" Roman asked, sadness threading through his voice.

"Yeah. I'm so, so sorry but-"

Roman nodded. "I get it. You don't need to apologise. Will I meet you again tomorrow?"

Virgil nodded. "Definitely." He hesitated before pressing a quick kiss to Roman's cheek before running off.

Roman felt Vee's hand leave his but didn't register it fully. Slowly, he lifted his hand to touch his cheek where Vee had kissed him.

A slow smile spread over Roman's face. He hugged his elbows and whirled round in a circle, laughing to the sky. Roman was sure he was blushing but at this point he didn't care.

"Is this what love feels like?" He wondered. "I need to talk to Re. He's going to want to know everything." Then, Roman hesitated. "Re knows what Vee looks like. If Re knew, he'd search the whole kingdom for Vee. Vee wouldn't want that."

"Besides, I'm going to meet him tomorrow." Roman said quietly. He laughed, leaning his head back. "I'm going to meet him again tomorrow and maybe I'll be able to convince him to stay beyond midnight." Roman laughed again. He ran his thumb over his own palm, imagining the feeling of Vee's hand in his.

"Parting is such sweet sorrow." He muttered under his breath. "But I shall wait again until the morrow." Roman laughed again.

Virgil leaned against a wall of his house, trying to catch his breath. He'd run all the way from the castle to here. Virgil put his head in his hands and tried not to scream.

"Virgil, you fucking idiot!" He muttered, dragging his hand along the wall as he went inside. "Oh, hello, I'm Virgil, I'm an idiot. I told a prince I don't know my name and then I kissed him. How are you today?"

Virgil put his hands over his eyes and groaned. "I'm so dead." He thought. "I'm so fucking dead."

Despite all his overthinking and worrying, a smile found its way onto Virgil's face. He let out a nervous little laugh.

"I just kissed a prince." He said to himself quietly. He laughed his nervous laugh again. "Guess we can tick that off the bucket list." Virgil laughed again, the sound slowly losing its nervousness.

"I just kissed a prince!" Virgil said to himself. He laughed, louder this time, and ran up the staircase to his room.

"I just kissed a prince!" Virgil yelled up to the rafters. "Hear that mama and papa?! Hear that world?! I - Virgil Summers - just kissed Prince Roman!" He laughed joyously, whirling around with arms outstretched.

Virgil sat down on his bed, grinning contentedly. He tilted his head to the side slightly, giggling quietly.

"Wonder what he'll say." Virgil thought. "Whether he'll bring it up or not. And he kissed me first so... maybe..." Virgil shook his head and laughed.

"God, what's happened to me?" He asked himself. "Know what, I don't care what's happened to me. I don't ever want to feel any way but this." Virgil thought to himself.

He hugged his elbows and lay down on his bed, closing his eyes and grinning. The slight gold still woven through his shoes glinted in the moonlight.
