Chapter 30
"Your dreams are so big." Virgil said. "So much bigger than mine." He looked up at the sky; stars speckling the black-blue night like freckles.
"I guess when your world is so small, you dream beyond it." Roman said. "You dream bigger than you can live."
"I certainly don't dream bigger than I live." Virgil said. "But then I wonder if I live bigger than I dream. Because it doesn't feel like it."
Roman shrugged. "What does it look like tonight?" He asked. "The sky, I mean. Usually I pester Re about it but he's probably off somewhere getting drunk."
Virgil laughed a little. "Responsible prince then, huh?" He asked, slipping into his sarcastic tone easily. Roman laughed.
"Yeah. Real responsible." He said. He shook his head. "I don't know. He'd be a better king than me, though. At least he'd actually be able to see the kingdom's problems."
"But would he be able to listen to them?" Virgil asked. "Seeing problems is all good and well but if you do nothing but look at them, you're not really helping. I think you need compassion to be a king. You need to know what to do and how to help."
"Neither of us know that." Roman said. "We were taught how to ballroom dance, not discuss important problems."
"Because you can't teach stuff like that." Virgil said. "That comes with a level head and a kind heart. What would you do, for example, if the poorer part of your kingdom was starving, if they didn't have enough food? How would you fix that?"
Roman's brow furrowed in thought. "I'd raise the tax among the royals and nobility." He said slowly. "Not much so they'd get stroppy but enough to feed those without."
"See? You listened to the problem and thought about it. You'd be a great king." Virgil said. Roman laughed and shook his head.
"I doubt it." He said.
"Listen, Princey, I've never been confident about anything in my life." Virgil said. He hesitated before taking Roman's hand gently. He half expected Roman to pull his hand away. Roman didn't. "But I'm confident that you're going to be a great king."
Roman smiled down at the ground. He ran a thumb over Virgil's palm, making Virgil's breath catch.
"What- What are you doing?" Virgil asked quietly.
"Memorising." Roman said, just as quietly. Virgil felt himself blush and looked away, up at the sky.
"Uhm, you wanted to know what the sky looked like tonight?" He asked. Roman nodded. Virgil swallowed and told himself sharply to get a grip. "It's so bright. Almost like it could be day. There's nearly a full moon and I don't think I've ever seen the stars so bright. They're like little pin-pricks of silver. And the sky's like a huge blanket. All black and velvet and... completely endless." He said, releasing a breath in a little sigh. Roman smiled.
"It sounds beautiful." His smile dropped a bit. "I wish I could see it."
Virgil didn't want to see Roman's smile disappear, so he continued quickly. "Everything's tinted silver. Like, the bushes all look so magical. They're ever so slightly green but really it's just black and silver. And the walls are shining like nothing I've ever seen. Shining like... like platinum."
Roman smiled softly. "Sounds wonderful." He murmured.
"Yeah." Virgil agreed. "It is."
Don't make them kiss, don't make them kiss, don't make them kiss, don't make them kiss, don't-
Bye,
Blaize
