She peered out the window, mother's intuition. Jesse played in his sandbox with a strange, grubby boy.
She walked outside.
Jesse grinned. "Billy ran into the house, and you didn't see him."
Porch door was open. No one there.
"He's invisible sometimes. Billy's funny."
Mind playing tricks again.
Night fell, Jesse asleep. Turned out the last light.
Scratches down the dark hall. Giggles.
Hunched figure shivered upon the wall, wheezing. Head twisted to a ghastly angle, eyes aglow. Smile contorted childish cheeks. Gore-flecked teeth.
The boy who wasn't laughed and scurried across the ceiling.
Screams choked. Smothered.
