Chapter 5
"Cassius calm down son." Cassius was frantically walking around back and forth. He kept looking at me and couldn't tear his eyes away, and my father tried calming him down but it didn't seem te work much. I knew my eyes were still red but it bothered me to know how careless I was.
Everything was fine for five years with the pills and then just because I find out new information about my life I forget all my responsibilities. If what happened in the dream actually happened then it means the necromancer was really threatening my family. The deaths that occurred when I was dreaming were bad but at least I knew I was asleep most of the time.
If my father or mother had to experience any of that pain in real life I would never be able to forgive myself for getting them into that kind of situation.
"What the hell is she!?" I looked up into his eyes as he started to freak out even more about the whole situation. I rolled my eyes and tried standing up but my nerves felt almost frozen. I saw Cassius flinch and realized his movements were stick like.
It feels like being frozen.
I know he's feeling the same as I am and yet I don't know why this dream in particular was so different from the rest. My father left my side and went to Cassius to take a short walk and clear his mind. My mother was behind me and gave me a warm hug and and stayed there probably trying to help me get my temperature up.
"Sweetie why did you forget to take the pill?" She rubbed my back soothingly but I know she was angry. I was almost 21 years old and my mother still has this kind of hold on me.
"If you didn't notice, the reason is currently walking with dad. His familiar came out of nowhere and in his condition you should be glad I showed up when I did." I signed deeply trying to gather my thoughts on how to explain to my mother what just happened.
"Mom, it was different this time. I never sleepwalked before and never once did I have a conversation with him."
My mother looked concerned but kept quiet to keep listening to my story. "He threatened you and dad. He said I had to let the transformation happen and I'll become stronger. I don't even know where the dream starts and the reality ends, and what am I supposed to do with my fate bond if the person I'm fated to can't even look at me?"
Life wasn't getting easier with all these questions yet I knew how to answer them all with just one act.
Leave.
If I wanted to keep my parents safe I needed to stay away from them. Cassius hasn't exactly been a very close friend but if none this happened and we got ti know each other I know we would've been close. I needed to leave all of them behind and find the necromancer. Where to begin I had no idea but maybe starting to pack was a good start. Of course I couldn't tell my parents about this so I'll just have to make up an excuse.
I heard dad returning with Cassius and saw the look on his face has calmed down at least. He was still weary of me but at least he could look at me without the fear in his eyes.
"You know what I think. I think I want to make some breakfast, who's hungry?" My dad always made the best pancakes and so me and my mother both raised our hands at the same time. I knew that everything wasn't going to be fine after one meal but at least we could all sit down and have a normal day before I have to leave.
...
"You can't be serious. How do you forget your own birthday?" Cassius was laughing at me while eating the rest of his pancake that in my opinion had to much syrup on.
Yes I fid forget my own birthday and I blame it all on him. He was the reason why I even forgot to take a pill that I have been taking for the last five years every day. In fact my parents even forgot until we got back home and they suddenly remembered that I was 21 years old.
They were searching for me most of the night so they had more important things on their mind unlike the birthday that I couldn't even have if I was dead.
I glared at my mother as she took one of the strawberries that I cut up from my plate and placed it in her mouth. "These are delicious." I stared at her and when she turned to look my way she saw my unhappy face.
"I know they are, that's why I put them on My plate. For Me to eat."
I continued glaring at my mother and she almost looked terrified until she started laughing at my antics and almost took another one when I swiped at her hand and tried covering my plate at the same time.
"Hey, I'm the birthday girl so what I say goes and I say nobody touches my food thank you very much."
Now everyone started laughing and I just gave up on trying and continued eating my food with a slight glare on my face that I couldn't hold for very longe because of everyone's laughing. I started laughing with them and I just knew this was a good last memory.
My smile faltered as I looked at Cassius. He wasn't laughing anymore, in fact it looked like he was about to start crying. I didn't know a lot of grown men but I was pretty sure they weren't supposed to start crying out of nowhere.
"Mom, dad could you maybe get the dishes while I just go help Cassius set the spare room?" My parents didn't even notice the change in mood and did as I asked and I nodded my head in the direction of the bedrooms. He quickly stood up trying to get out fast enough so that they wouldn't notice something was wrong. I quickly followed behind him and saw him going into the nearest room which unfortunately had to be mine.
I didn't have time to get my room cleaned up after yesterday so everything on my bed was still on the floor. When I saw one of my bra's on the chair I quickly took it and shoved it behind my back and went to the bathroom to throw it inside a cabinet.
When I walked out I saw him standing by the window looking out. He didn't have any sort of emotion on his face, he just, stood there and watched.
Watched as the leaves rattled when the wind blew on them. Seeing the storm clouds that started to form around our neighborhood. I didn't want to disturb his peace but I knew I had to eventually.
"What was that about?" Did I have to sound so judgmental!
I screamed at myself internally but luckily he didn't see it that way and answered after taking in a deep breath, "It's just that image. The image of family."
I totally forgot about about his father and winched at the thought. We were still a family yet here we were forgetting that his was broken. I wasn't the best at comforting people so I just stood there trying to give him the space he needed.
When I wanted to turn away and walk out of the room he said something that made my blood run cold. "The image of a father, mother and their little girl right before they die."
Normally this would have been a situation where I would run he would kill me and my parents but this wasn't one of those occasions. Luckily.
I slowly turned to see him staring at me with a tears threatening to fall from his eyes. I knew the image in his head wasn't even an image, it was a memory. His memory.
I lightly gasped as I put it together all to quickly for my liking. "You had a family didn't you? You found your mate." He could only nod his head slowly and I started to feel a sharp pain in my chest knowing it was coming from him. This pain has been stuck with him and he couldn't even tell anyone, because he didn't really have anyone left.
Us. He had us now.
I walked over to him and embraced him in a hug. At first he didn't move but reluctantly his arms found their way around my shoulders only slightly pressing me closer. I felt the pain in my chest reside as his breathing slowed down.
"There was an accident. We were having a family dinner and then the next moment the carpets burst into flames and the fire spread throughout the entire house within seconds. I don't even know how I got out but I remember her screams. Our baby,"
his voice hitched and he composed himself a bit more, "My baby girl was gone. Her mother, my mate died with our child and I couldn't do anything about it. All I know was that afterwards my mother tried comforting me and when a friend of hers came by she said she felt a strong magical force that had dark magic set all over the house."
He didn't have to finish talking for me to understand what happened. A dark wizard or witch used their magic to set the house on fire. That was why it spread so quickly. The only thing bothering me was that I knew why it happened. I stepped back quickly and turned away so that I wouldn't have to look at him when saying this.
"I'm leaving tomorrow, the necromancer that cursed me send me a message and I have to stop him before he acts on his promise of killing my parents. I don't want this bond thing to come in the way so we need to brake it. I've been thinking that if you can reject a mate you can reject a fate right? So if we both reject each other then maybe it'll work."
He didn't say anything at first but then I heard him speak. "I Cassius Durmond, Omega here by reject you Jasmine as my fate." I smiled internally and said the same to him, "I Jasmine Peterson, Omega here by reject you Cassius as my fate."
I didn't even bother to look behind me and stormed off out of my own room and went outside. I needed to get a very much needed drink and walked until I found the nearest pub. I felt so guilty about saying something like that right after he told me he lost his family but it was for a good reason.
I walked up to the bar and ordered a Jameson whiskey on the rocks knowing I was going to regret it but I had to get my mind off of everything. When the bartender gave me my drink and I took the first sip I regretted it immediately and my face went sour.
I wasn't even a whiskey drinker but I knew it'll work faster than what I normally drink and it'll taste better than vodka.
"You doin okay there little lady? I haven't seen you around here b'fore and it looks like you'd be havin a hard time lately." The bartender was an older man that probably owned the pub. The grey in his beard made him look much older than he probably was but he seemed nice enough.
"I might be the reason that someone's life got ruined and I definitely can't fix it. Have any advice for something like that?" I took another sip from my glass and realized the taste got better with each drop that graced my lips.
"Well darlin I don't have much wisdom for that kinda drama, but the least I can tell you is to at least try and do something cause otherwise you're gonna sit here every night for the rest of your life regrettin' it." For someone who didn't claim to have wisdom he sure had a lot of it to share. I smiled at him and downed my drink cringing at the bitter taste.
He laughed at the face I made and that made me laugh as well. I took out some money and placed it on the counter and turned around and walked out. My mind was clearer than it was before strangely enough and I knew I finally had a plan.
For some reason my feet didn't take me the way home and I found my way to a cemetery that was small and only had a few graves. It was probably a family's cemetery that lived in nearby. I took a closer look and saw that there were some old people buried there but two of the gravestones caught my eye.
It was that of a little girl and her mother. Both died on the same day and on the mothers headstone it also read, "Loving wife." In an instant my mind raced back to Cassius. I felt guilty looking at these headstones, knowing they weren't theirs but the meaning behind them made my heart want to shatter. I know why they died and I'm pretty sure he doesn't because I'm still alive. He said that dark magic was used to kill them and five years ago when we talked to Pansy about the necromancer she said there weren't supposed to be any of them left because they were all wiped out.
For the last five years there has only been one dark wizard in the world and it seems he really had it out for me. He had to know about our connection and that's why he went after Cassius's family. He was sending a message, but not to him.
It was meant for me.
