Chapter 1
5 years later
"Sweetie it's your 21st birthday you can't do nothing to celebrate tomorrow. It's a very important day in a person's life and in a werewolf's life as well."
I groaning internally at the thought. Most people just spent their birthday with booze and a very big headache. I wasn't in the mood for drunk humans running around throwing up on my birthday so I wanted to stay home and play games with my parents.
As for the werewolf part of the birthday, it's usually the time when a werewolf would find a mate. Not that I have anything against whoever mine might be, but I don't have time for stuff like that.
I have one main priority always, even when I'm busy working at the firm to help earn money, or when I'm supposed to be focusing on finding a mate. I still have to find that necromancer. He practically ruined my life as it is.
"Sweetie remember your pills it's almost eight o'clock."
Ah yes, the pills. That was another problem I had to endure for the past five years. As I said my mother sells potions to help with finances but she only started to have an interest after we found out the full extent of the curse that was put on me.
In our new neighborhood we moved in we found a local clinic with a witch selling herbs and potions to the more inhuman customers. When we found her I was practically half dead from the lack of sleep I was getting. Every time I fell asleep and I would dream something dreadful would happen, whether it was drowning in your own blood or seeing people you love being eaten by dogs I always woke up screaming with blood red eyes.
The color always stayed there for even minutes after I woke up. One time it even lasted an hour. Every time this happened I didn't even sleep for that long. When we told the witch what had happened she got to work and within two days she got a solution.
She made these small green balls that looked like marbles. When I took the first one and lay down I was sleeping within seconds with my head down. I woke up almost twenty minutes later with only very little sleep but at least I felt a bit better.
The witch told us that she made the marble to keep me from going into any sort of Rem sleep cycle. Rem sleep is the time when a person dreams and since I always had the problems when dreaming it made sense to stop it.
The only other problem was that I didn't have a lot of energy. I'm mostly a calm person and try not to do to much to drain my energy. I have to take the pills ever day at eight in the morning and eight in the afternoon.
They didn't taste like anything at least and I was very thankful for them even if I did lose my dreams and a lot of my ability to be myself again but I was alive and that was all that mattered.
"I'm going to Pansy's to get more of your pills and to get more herbs for the new potion I'm making. When I get back you better have chosen something to do for your birthday that doesn't involve being with your parents."
I rolled my eyes at the remark and stood up from where I was sitting on the couch and went to the kitchen. In one of our cupboards I always stashed away some of my favorite Oreos with chocolate coating.
I took the whole bag and went to sit on the couch again. I was alone in the house and the silence bothered me so I put on the TV to see what was showing. When a channel with friends showed up I kept it on for a while.
Thump.
My blood ran cold as I shut off the TV after hearing something fall upstairs. I had to convince myself that it was nothing, but wasn't this where someone dies in a horror film? I was debating whether to go when I realized that I was a supernatural being with claws and fast reflexes.
I wolfed up and walked upstairs ready to attack anything that might have gotten into my house when another thump came from upstairs. I slowed my pace and zoned in on the sound from upstairs.
The sound of wind coming in from an open window was the only sound I could hear. I knew it was probó nothing to wordy about but something just seemed off.
I reached my bedroom where I heard the wind still chiming in through the window. When I stepped into the room everything seemed normal when I looked around. I could feel my eyes starting to shift and I closed them and breathed deeply to calm myself. The sudden rush of adrenaline must've caused my almost shift.
I turned around and looked towards the window and saw that it was indeed open. I walked over to close it when I saw the small red splotches on the windowsill. When I looked outside I saw that the tree outside's leaves weren't even moving, yet I kept hearing the sound of wind moving. I tried to focus my hearing even more to figure out what was going on when I heard it.
The sound that I so mistakenly thought was wind, now that I was closer to it, sounded like breathing. Something alive and probably hurt was in my room.
It was just my luck that I figured it out after I calmed myself down not to shift. I've had troubles before controlling it yet when I need it to happen my wolf refuses, and I though I was stubborn.
Thump!
The sound was louder this time. I wasn't sure if turning around was the best option yet my body decided for me. When I turned around I saw it. It looked like a small fox but it wasn't of the cute variety.
He was snarling at me with his paws covered in blood. The worst part was that I knew that it wasn't going to kill me but my mother definitely was for staining the grey carpet red and I think we all know that blood doesn't wash out easily.
The fox lifted his paw and crashed it down hard on the floor making another thumping noise. It seemed as if it wanted to charge at me but it didn't move an inch besides his stomping.
Silence.
The growling stopped. The thumping stopped. The fox was now just staring at me. It was then that I first looked into it's eyes. The icy blue color in them seemed almost impossible for a normal fox, but it isn't really normal that a fox would find it's way up two story house and into a window either.
I wasn't sure what I was looking at until it hit me. Pansy has a black cat as some witches do and when I would go with mom to the shop I would always play with the cat. His name was Grey and was fun to play with when I was bored waiting.
The main point was that Grey was a familiar, a magical creature that most supernatural beings have. The familiar helps the being to guide it's path along in life, and it's a fact that familiars all have the same trait.
Ice blue eyes.
I didn't know who's familiar found it's way into my room but it definitely wasn't there for the fun of it. I bend down onto my knees and beckoned for the fox to come closer.
"I know what you are, don't worry I won't hurt you. I just need to know how to find your master to get you back to them."
The fox didn't move until a few seconds later. By the way it was walking I could see that the fox was definitely not the one injured. He had to have gotten the blood from someone else. That someone was most likely his master.
The fox came closer and sat just staring at me. I knew that if I was speaking to Grey he would understand me most of the time and I wondered if it was the same for the fox.
"Why are you here? Where is your master?"
He didn't move an inch and just stared at me. He definitely wasn't like Grey. I wasn't sure what to do with him. I wanted to help if I can but if he didn't lead me towards whoever was hurt I couldn't do anything.
"So it's going to be staring contest huh. Well then I'm going to go then and if you follow me I might be able to help you wash that blood off of your paws."
I just stood up and hoped he followed me and walked into my bathroom. I took a small towel and walked over to the sink and let the warm water run over it. When the towel was soaked I turned the tap off and when I turned around the fox was staring at me.
He lifted his paw again and tapped it on the floor. This time when he tapped it there was a rhythm. I almost thought it was morse code when he upped and ran away out the door. I dropped the towel and ran after him.
Somehow the little critter got the front door open and was running down the street. I didn't even close the door and ran after him. The sun was still high and made it harder for me to see him and his small figure didn't really help at that.
I did however see the big vehicle that was racing towards me and ran out of the way and finally onto the sidewalk. I couldn't see him anymore but I still had his scent and raced after it.
I probably looked like a crazy girl chasing after what the humans hopefully thought was a dog. If someone saw the fox they'd definitely try to get rid of it and I needed him to show me where his master is.
I kept following the scent and ended up by the entrance of the woods. It was the part where the scouts would go out on camping trips to be safe from wildlife.
I stood at the entrance and looked around but couldn't find him. I lost his scent, it was most likely a side affect of not having enough energy. A normal wold would never have lost a scent so easily as I did. It was frustrating to know that I was practically useless in a dire situation.
At least I knew that they were both somewhere in these woods so maybe I could still find them if I tried tracking them with prints in stead of smell.
I looked around for the small prints of a fox and those of a human's. The fox would've walked close to his master's footprints to know exactly where he was.
When I saw tiny prints leading alongside that of what looked like a male's footprints I started off in that direction. It seemed all to easy and that was the case until the road I was following wasn't on the normal walking trail and just wandered off between the trees.
The path wasn't as easy anymore and that was proven by the bushes hitting me in the face almost every step I took. I knew I had to live with it and just went on until I stumbled over a branch that I didn't see.
I lifted my head from the ground and wiped the leaves off that seemed to be stuck to my face. Today didn't start out as pleasant and it seemed to get worse.
I was just supposed to enjoy my morning yet fate decided to lead me into the woods to be attacked by nature and covered in moldy leaves.
"Ahhh!" My head snapped in the direction that the screams came from. From the sound I could gather that it was a man that wasn't very far from where I was.
When I got up and pulled my hair out of my eyes I started running in the direction it came from. It was probably the master of the fox. This time I made sure to dodge the branches that were aiming for my face.
When I was closer to them I got the fox's scent again and knew I was on the right path at least. The only problem was that I could also smell blood and quite a lot of it. Whoever it was that went out of their way to ruin my morning had to be alive so I could kill them myself. As you could've guessed I wasn't exactly a morning person.
"Ow!" When I turned left at a large tree that had a low branch I ducked under it just to trip yet again. This time it wasn't a branch thought but the small critter that led me here in the first place.
"You know for someone that wants me to help them you sure have a funny way of showing gratitude. I can smell the blood, so show me to your master."
The fox walked and I followed him towards a tree where I saw a glimpse of someone's leg covered in blood. My heart was pounding because I didn't know what I was going to find until I walked around the tree.
"Well this isn't bad at all."
