CAKE TIME
taehyung focus
taehyung watches jungkook skitter anxiously besides him, amused at the younger's nervousness.
the two sit at the back of the bus, away from the angry calls of toddlers and their stressed moms and the giggling middle schooler's coming back from after school clubs or outings with friends.
jungkook sits besides the window, drawing swirls on the condensation on the window with his index fingers and jiggling his knees up and down with nerves. taehyung sits besides him, staring back at the middle schoolers who sneak glances at them and whisper audibly "omg guys, they're so hot."
taehyung smiles to himself at girls' behaviour whilst looking away and sliding a finger under his choker to adjust the strip of material.
he places his hand above jungkook's hand and leans into his side, "calm down." he murmurs, other hand still fiddling with his choker.
he feels jungkook deflate besides him, sighing deeply.
"there's nothing to be nervous about, your mom's just getting married." taehyung further consoles.
"i know, it's just- it's," jungkook struggles to find the words to describe his feelings.
taehyung rubs careful circles on the back of jungkook's hand in what he hoped was a soothing manner.
he hears the girls gasp audibly, chattering even louder with their friends.
"it'll be fine - we'll say hi, watch them say their vows and eat cake. i'll be there with you, so there's no need to panic." taehyung hums, smiling at the word cake.
"yeah, yeah - you're right." jungkook says with a small smile growing on his face. he looks down and smiles at the older, leaning down to press his lips on the side of taehyung's head.
taehyung blinks.
red immediately colours his neck, a blush rapidly travelling up to his cheeks and the tips of his ears.
he clears his throat and mutters a weak, "im always right," to try and cover up his flustered self, looking away.
jungkook doesn't notice and turns away, looking out of the window at the fleeting scenery. he smiles to himself when he sees their reflections in the window.
"we look so weird," jungkook comments, looking down at their neatly pressed suited attire. they certainly looked weird; they receive several stares from the bus passengers and people talk behind their hands, eyeing their suits and muttering about "rich kids."
taehyung wanted to laugh - he was not rich at all. if they saw his shitty tiny dorm and the box of instant pot noodles under his bed, they most definitely wouldn't call him rich.
"yeah we do." taehyung laughs.
slowly slowly the passengers on the bus leave, leaving only jungkook and taehyung sitting quietly at the back of the bus, taehyung's hand still resting on top of jungkook's hand.
"the stop's soon. you feeling okay?" taehyung asks, lifting his head to look at jungkook. jungkook turns his gaze away from the darkening outside, the sun hiding behind the winter black skies, and looks at taehyung.
"mm." he murmurs, nodding and offering a small smile.
"oh and," jungkook inhales sharply, "do you think you're ready to date me yet?" jungkook asks, trying to smile, but his smile turns into a grimace, teeth biting into his lower lip.
"you'll find out later." taehyung hums, ignoring jungkook's behaviour, "oh, here's our stop." he says, taking his hand away from jungkook's and getting up.
he hears jungkook sigh behind him.
"oh," taehyung breaths upon seeing the venue come into view.
the wedding was held in a large country club, rented out specifically for the wedding. the building stands tall and proud in the middle of the countryside, trees planted here and there and are bright green despite the winter weather.
taehyung's eye light up at pink fairy lights strung from the heavy wooden doorway of the building, the soft rosy glow lighting up the entrance invitingly.
then he notices the audi's and mercedes-benz's parked outside and the few guests roaming the grounds in long swathes of silk and glimmering jewellery. he gulps, wondering if he'll stick out like a sore thumb around these classy people - perhaps he'd eat with the wrong fork or snack on too many starters? the thought worries him unnecessarily and jungkook seems to notice this and takes his hand and starts to practically march him down the path to the country club.
"let's get this over and done with." jungkook says, trying not to grit his teeth.
taehyung had thought the outside was the prettiest but that quickly changes when he sees the interior.
taehyung's breath is taken away by the beauty of the wedding venue - the theme was white and soft pinks. swathes of pink fabric hang from the tall walls, pink roses are dotted on the walls as well as around the hall in expensive looking vases, some were pinned to the breast pockets of the waiters.
taehyung looks around with awe, eyes turning wide at the high class guests surrounding him who smiled and sipped at their white wine demurely. his gaze lands at the back of the room where a trail of pink flowers lay on the ground, leading towards an overjoyed pretty bride and a handsome groom.
taehyung's attention flickers to jungkook when he squeezes taehyung's hand at the sight of the bride and groom. taehyung, without saying anything, gives his a reassuring squeeze back.
"oppa! you came!" the sudden shrill voice of ji yeon comes from taehyung's side and the two look to see a bundle of red and white coloured fabric running towards them at top speed. taehyung would've yelped at the sight if it weren't for ji yeon's face popping up from behind the huge red puff - her cheeks shiny and her teeth on display.
jungkook grins and kneels down, opening his arms wide for ji yeon to run into. "oh my, who's this princess?" jungkook questions, tweaking ji yeon's nose.
"ji yeon! im princess ji yeon! don't you recognise me?"
"no!" jungkook mock gasps, eyes widening comically. "no, my sister's way too ugly to be a princess!" he says, incredulous. ji yeon frowns before hitting her oppa's chest with tiny fists.
"so mean." she huffs. taehyung watches on with fondness, the sight of jungkook playing with his sister was too cute.
ji yeon turns around, noticing taehyung's presence and laughs. "hi again - i remember you!"
taehyung smiles, about to reply with a friendly greeting when ji yeon detaches herself from jungkook and suddenly grabs taehyung's hand, tugging it.
taehyung kneels down to her height when she motions for him to kneel.
"have your nightmares gone yet?" she asks, eyes wide with concern.
taehyung feels his heart warm at the little girls question. his eyes flit over to jungkook who kneels besides him, frowing. taehyung turns back to ji yeon.
"you remember?" he says, ji yeon nods in response. "mm, they're not gone but i dont have them that much now." taehyung tilts his head, smiling. "thanks to your oppa here."
"that's good!" ji yeon beams, still holding on to taehyung's hand. jungkook stands up and ruffles ji yeon's hair, "little princess, where's euneun?"
"it's eun min, you dick." a sharp voice cuts into the cheery atmosphere and eun min enters into the little group with her cream coloured heels. she glares at him through her usual heavily eyelined eyes.
"hello to you too euneun!" jungkook grins cheerfully.
"whatever," she scoffs, rolling her eyes at jungkook before realising taehyung behind her new stepbrother, still talking to ji yeon. she tucks a stray strand of blonde hair behind her ear, offering a flirty "hello taehyung, it's nice to see you again."
"oh hi! it's nice to see you ag-"
"euneun! where's mom?" jungkook interrupts taehyung, flinging a casual arm around eun min's bare shoulders. she scowls, shrugging him off and smoothing the creases of her pretty red dress down.
"she's down there - you missed the ceremony." she grunts, flicking jungkook's forehead. her scowl quickly changes into a smirk, "but you're here now so it's okay little brother. make sure to call me noona now since we're now step siblings." she hums, pinching his cheeks hard.
"fuck, get off me." he hisses, violently pushing her off and stalking down the rose petal strewn floor, forgetting to tell taehyung. it doesn't matter though because ji yeon's dragged him away to show him the towering wedding cake and the tiny figurines of a bride and groom sitting atop the cake.
jungkook focus
jungkook throws back his shoulders and tries to appear confident and charming but fails to keep that facade up when he nears closer and close to his mother.
his mother spots him before he could run away. her brown eyes widen and her red lips stretch into a large smile. she outstretches her arms in a welcoming embrace and jungkook feels his uncomfortableness dissipate, he walks right over and hugs his mom fiercely, inhaling her familiar and warm scent.
"you look beautiful." he says once he pulls away, smiling at his mom's plush wedding gown.
she beams at him before hugging him again, "look at you! you look handsome! i knew that suit was a good choice!" her voice then quietens, "and im really glad you're here, son."
"me too mom." he says, pulling away. she pulls him again with such strong force that it nearly knocks the breath out of jungkook. jungkook, wide eyed and suffocating in the tight hug, hears his mom sniffle, "i didn't see you at the ceremony and i thought you weren't going to come."
"ah, the bus was running late -- mom, let me go, you're suffocating me." he chokes out. jungkook's mother releases him at once, apologising and trying to stem her tears before they wrecked her pretty makeup.
"im just happy you're here." she sniffs, smiling. jungkook smiles back and shoves his hands into his trouser pockets.
"me too mom." he repeats.
"come, come, let's go see youngho! youngho!" she calls and her groom walks over, wearing a grin stretching from ear to ear.
"hey jungkook, glad you could make it!"
jungkook pushes the slight discomfort down to the pit of his stomach and tries to muster up a genuine smile.
"do you know where eun min is?"
jungkook surveys the area, looking over the heads of guests to spot eun min chatting away to taehyung, who ignores her and struggles to hold back ji yeon from licking the cake.
jungkook has to stifle his laughter, his stepfather and mom confused.

the rest of the wedding carries on; guests drink wine and eat canapés, congratulating the happy bride and groom. jungkook's forced to walk around with his mom, forced to be introduced to several relatives and friends and smile at them and hear 'congratulations' a million times.
he doesn't mind it though, his whole childhood consisted of being paraded around his mom's dinner parties, friends of his mom cooing at jungkook's chubby cheeks and cute nose.
although he doesn't mind it, he can't help but feel slightly worried about taehyung, who's alone and in a completely new environment.
he finds himself often searching the hall for taehyung whenever his mom looks away, trying to find the older to see if he was okay.
when it was finally time to feast on the 5 star cooked dinner, jungkook eases his mom's hand off of his wrist and leans in to tell her that needed to go.
"go where? you've only just came-"
"relax mom, i just need to go find my plus one."
"plus one? oh yes, you mentioned a plus one! where is she? or he?" she asks brightly.
"he." he smiles, looking around to finally spot taehyung slow dancing with eun min. he grinds his teeth with disgust, glowering at his new stepsister's actions. "he's there dancing with euneun noona."
"oh! he's handsome, jung-"
"mom, i'll be right back - i gotta go save him from the witch." his mom frowns at the word witch but jungkook levels before she could scold him.
he strides down the crowded hall, edging by a group of women wearing fancy gowns whilst trying not to step on their long dresses.
he finally makes his way towards eun min and taehyung and taps on the older's shoulder, who looks stiff playing the 'male' role in slow dancing.
taehyung looks relieved when he looks over his shoulder to see jungkook.
"hey noona, unless you grow a dick overnight and look like me, there's no way taehyung'll find you attractive." he says, all cocky like, taking taehyung's hand from eun's hold and smiling mock friendly.
"hey-" eun min tries to protest but jungkook pulls taehyung away, taking both of his hands and pulling him towards his chest.
"sorry for ditching you - mom had a few guests she wanted me to see." he apologises.
taehyung rests his head in the crook of jungkook's shoulder. "it's okay, i got to play with ji yeon," he laughs, "she kept wanting me to be her lady in waiting."
jungkook laughs in reply.
he clears his throat a little before leaning in to taehyung's ear, ask him - ask him now.
"tae, are you-"
"gather around everyone! it's cake time!" youngho yells, grinning and baring his white teeth. the guests laugh and walk towards the couple standing besides the majestic cake.
taehyung lifts his head from off of jungkook's chest, ears perking up, "it's cake time!" he gasps.
