Taking a swim

It was two days later and Abigail was lost. She wished she could explain it to Lunar, her moon wolf; he would most likely be able to find the way home.

Of course she didn't want to go back to her life before, but she thought that maybe the Sheriff would be there, and she could ask for another family. He would probably just say no anyways, compared to many other kids, Abigail had a pretty ok life.

Abigail decided to just keep moving. The nippy wind pushed the wispy strands of her rust coloured hair out of her face. It was defiantly a chilly spring day.

Abigail peered to her left, hearing an odd creaking sound, like what the hinges on the front door where like when you had to force the door to open in the winter. Abigail spotted a young magpie. Her uncle had always hated those birds, "They're too noisy" he would say, "They tear up the trash, what a bunch of messmakers!" Abigail, however, loved the shrill sound that the magpies would sing, it sounded like a exited child who just got given a wonderful toy. Abigail loved their feathers two, a sleek black, sometimes tinted a gorgeous blue in the sun, mixed with a soft, moonlight, white.

Abigail approached the young magpie. It wasn't super small, but it wasn't very large either. It's neck was thinner than a full grown, and it's head had some adorable feather tuffs sticking out the top. It opened its beak, just slightly, to let out a screech-like chirp.

"Hey there," Abigail reached out slowly for the bird, "let me see you." The magpie hopped away, but Abigail followed. The bird took off for a low, very short, flight. He didn't seem to fly well yet. Odd that his parents wouldn't be around cheering his flight attempts.

Abigail finally got less than a foot away, then lightning quick she snatched up to young scavenger. She held him tight, but gentle, until he stopped struggling. Then she held him on her hand. He perched there for a few seconds, before deciding he would rather be in that tree. He swooped off her arm, and just made it to the lowest branch of a pine. Abigail couldn't tell how birds always avoided being pierced by pine needles, but the magpie seemed unhurt. So Abigail walked away, joining up with Lunar, who had waited for her.

An ongoing crashing sound drew Abigail's attention. She pushed through a couple bushes, until she was right by a small waterfall. She followed the river it created down a few meters, and then stooped down to take a drink. Usually it would be unsafe to drink from a wild river, but Abigail was too thirsty for caution. Abigail soon regretted how fast she had stooped to take a drink, she had gone to fast and leaned to far, and now she was being rushed down the river, which seemed a lot faster and stronger once she was in it.

"Help!" Abigail screamed, "Lun---." She was cut off by the rushing waves. Lunar ran back and forth on the bank, barking. He dove after her, and that was all Abigail could see before she went under.

Sorry about this being a short chapter. I just really wanted to end it with a cliffhanger. Don't worry it only gets more dangerous from here, I'll leave you to wallow in your suspense >:)
