The Monsters Under
At the age of five, we were scared to sleep in our own beds,
So we slept with mommy and daddy, so they could protect us from the Monsters under our beds.
At the age of six, we had mom and dad read us bedtime stories where heroes slaid monsters, and saved the princesses from their slumbers,
We had them tuck us in bed, and made them check the closets and under the bed.
But when they said it was okay,
The fear still stayed.
At the age of seven, we hid nerf guns under our pillows, and a real gun under the mattress.
By the age of ten, we were skeptic, but we still believed.
And in our dreams, we were heroes that slaid monsters, saved princesses, and never hid.
We were scared of the Monsters who slept under the bed,
Scared that they'd yank the covers off,
So we held on to our blankets like they were keeping us alive.
We were scared that they hid in the darkness,
So we kept our nightlight on.
But at the age of fifteen, we no longer believed in the Monsters that hid under our beds.
Mom and dad never tucked us in bed, no more stories about heroes,
and we kept the nightlight In a box, packed away in the attic corner.
The real gun was left under the mattress,
And the nerf guns were given to your little brother.
At fifteen, we started High school, and learned about betrayal,
Friends came and go, lovers never stayed, and nicknames seemed to stain your skin as well as your heart.
You let everything the bullies say get under your skin, you let it all pile up, until it consumed your body and mind,
You felt vulnerable, and naked, your secrets were exposed,
Mistakes you made are who you are is what they tell you.
You believe them, and shame yourself.
Razor blades become your addiction, and the other kids don't know, or how would they understand the result of what they're saying, and the pain it brings, when all your cuts are covered by layered clothes.
Because they're the real monsters!!!
The monster weren't made up, neither was it all in your head. There's no monsters under our bed,
The Monsters are under our skin!
Because they've always been inside of us,
We just didn't realize it yet.
Like the kids didn't realize the gravity of what they were saying.
The gun under our mattress was pressed against your head, and before yoy pulled the trigger, mommy and daddy ran into the room.
They became your heroes and gave you medication and help that slaid the Monster inside.
But you're only one of the many,
And many have ended their lives.
We have to realize what we say, be careful, and count our words. We have to overcome our demons,
and kill the monster that hides under our skin.
We can't listen to hurtful words,
We need to be positive,
And show ourselves love, but it's too hard to do, because the Monsters under our skin,
Well,
They like to lie.
And all those lies are put in our head, and we believe what they say,
And some of us listen to them, and act out on what they say.
Because some of us,
Are the Monsters.
