Chapter 1:
Park Jisoo banged her head against her desk repeatedly. This is the third year in a row she was stuck next to Seo Changbin, and it seemed like it was his personal goal to make her life a living hell.
"You might want to stop. You are at risk of damaging your only remaining brain cell," Changbin told her.
"Knock it off," Hwang Hyunjin told him, putting his hand between Jisoo's head and the table as a cushion.
Hyunjin and Jisoo had been friends since childhood. Having him sit in front of her would be nice, at least.
"Play nice this year," Lee Minho ordered Changbin. Like Hyunjin and Jisoo, Changbin, and Minho were also childhood buddies.
"Please switch seats with me! I beg you," Jisoo begged Minho.
"I'll tell the teacher," Changbin replied before Minho could speak.
"I hate you," Jisoo told him, taking a break from headbanging to glare at him before continuing on.
"I wouldn't have it any other way," Changbin laughed, patting her shoulder.
Despite the arguing and constant fighting, all four usually hung out together, mostly due to the fact that they were social outcasts of sorts.
Changbin had a very harsh sense of humor and was chalked up to be the class bully. Minho was also labeled as a bully because he hung out with Changbin. Hyunjin was the most introverted person in the country. Jisoo was just the weird girl. She only spoke when spoken to (aside from the three guys), and she always daydreamed in a trance like state that weirded other students out.
The bell rang, signaling that class was in session, and students ran to their assigned seats and quieted down.
"I see you all have found your assigned seat," their homeroom teacher, Mr. Lim observed. He was well known for being way too strict, so no student wanted to cross him.
"Let's start off the year by picking our class representatives," Mr. Lim continued on. "Are there any nominations for president?"
Hands shot up immediately, and the teacher called on a student.
"Kim Seungmin, " they spoke, and was followed by a chorus of agreement from the other students.
Seungmin was the obvious choice for president. He was the top student in the school, very organized, and incredibly good-looking.
"Any others," Mr. Lim asked. No hands popped up. It was seemingly unanimous. "Very well, come up to the front."
Seungmin stood up and started to walk from the middle of the classroom. All eyes were on him, and Jisoo couldn't peel her eyes away. She, like every other girl in the small town, had had a thing for him since elementary school. Unfortunately for all the girls, Seungmin was more focused on school than romance and never gave anyone a chance.
"Thank you," Seungmin spoke, his voice clear. "I will do my best to take care of you this year as well."
The class clapped and cheered at him. Mr. Lim quieted them down and asked for nominations for Vice President and Treasurer, which were chosen quickly. Then he asked for class secretary.
Immediately, Changbin's hand shot up into the air, and he grinned evily at Jisoo. Horror filled her eyes as she realized his plan.
Jisoo was a very simple girl who didn't have a lot of dislikes. However, she absolutely hated being in the spotlight and any attention from anyone that she wasn't close with.
Mr. Lim pointed at Changbin, motioning for him to speak.
"I nominate Park Jisoo," his smirk was devilish.
"Any objections? No? Ms.Park come up to the front, please."
Jisoo wanted to object with every bone in her body, but that would have required her to actually speak. Instead, she stood up and walked to the front next to Seungmin and the other two students, her eyes glued to the floor.
"Any words for the class," Mr. Lim asked.
Jisoo shook her head, embarrassed at all the attention. She could hear some of the students giggling, no doubt making fun of her absolute awkwardness .
"Okay then, you all may sit down, but remember to stay after your classes to meet about the annual new school year overnight trip."
Jisoo let out a relieved breath when she sat back down that she hadn't even realised she was holding. Her eyes met Chanbin's with a glare longing to commit his murder. He just silently laughed.
She kicked the back of Hyunjin's chair and glared at him when he turned around to make eye contact.
Why didn't you object? She mouthed to him. As her best friend, he was obligated to have her back.
He shrugged his shoulders and mouthed back a sorry before turning back around.
Jisoo sighed and laid her head down on the desk, and looked out the window. She had a feeling this was going to be a long year.
Chapter 2:
After class, she met with the other student council members in the back of the classroom. Cheong Bora, a pretty preppy girl, was nominated for Vice President, and Ahn Hyejin, Bora's best friend, was Treasurer.
"You're the Prez, and I'm the Vice Prezzie like every other year," Bora giggled flirtatiously at Seungmin.
Jisoo internally rolled her eyes. This girl was literally being way too cringey.
"Yeah, haha," Seungmin laughed awkwardly. "Anyways, let's get straight to business. We have three places to choose from. We can go to the temple, mountain, or beach. Which one should we do?"
"I'm okay with whatever," Bora said, fluttering her eyes at Seungmin in such an obvious way.
Every girl had a thing for Seungmin, and if Jisoo had any courage, she would probably try making a move on him too, just not like that. It was way over the top and almost disgusting.
"Me too," Hyejin mimicked her friend. "Just whatever."
"Ah... Okay," Seungmin responded, obviously uncomfortable from the girls hitting on him. "Jisoo, do you have a preference? The ocean, maybe?"
"Uh..." Jisoo blanked for a second. She was not used to anyone asking for her opinion on anything. Bora and Hyejin looked at her in a judging way that was almost insulting. However, Seungmin had a kind look that was inviting and reasuring and gave her the courage to recover and speak. "We could go to the mountains. We've been to the ocean every other year, so it may be nice to try something different."
Bora and Hyejin scowled at her. However, Seungmin offered her a warm smile that made Jisoo's heart flutter and said, "Sure. Let's go to the mountains this year."
After discussing a few more topics, they ended the meeting.
The two girls bombarded poor Seungmin with questions of his plans for the rest of the day, and Jisoo took the opportunity to bolt out of the class room to the steps of the front entrance where she usually met up with Hyunjin and Minho after they finished soccer practice. Thankfully, Changbin had to go home directly after school most days to help with his family's shop so she would have a break from him at least.
Jisoo pulled out her headphones and leaned against a pillar of the building while she waited. Soccer practice usually finished at 4, so she had five or so minutes to spare.
"Hey," a voice spoke above her. Jisoo looked up and was surprised to see Seungmin. She thought he would for sure be leaving with Bora and Hyejin.
"Ah, hello," Jisoo smiled, sliding her headphones around her neck instead.
"You usually take that way home, don't you," Seungmin asked, pointing towards the sidewalk on the left.
"Yes, I do," Jisoo blinked, dumbfounded.
"Oh, I go that way as well if you wanted to walk together."
Still dumbfounded, Jisoo just stared at him, confused. Seungmin wanted to walk with her? Why? She probably would have stared at him even longer if Minho and Hyunjin hadn't shown up at that moment.
"Ah, that's too bad. We are actually going to the internet cafe that way," Minho interrupted, pointing in the opposite direction, a stoic look on his face.
"We are?" Jisoo and Hyunjin asked in unison. This was not a prearranged plan
"Ah, I see." Seungmin responded, meeting Minho's gaze. There was a sort of weird tension in the air that Jisoo wasn't familiar with.
Jisoo looked to Hyunjin for an answer, but he only shrugged, just as confused as she was.
"You can come too," Hyunjin offered after a moment of awkward silence. However, his offer was empty with no real meaning and came off cold and very uninviting. Hyunjin hated hanging around people he was not very close with, and Seungmin seemed to be able to pick up on that.
"I can't today, next time," Seungmin replied after a moment and then turned directly to Jisoo. "See you tomorrow."
"Bye," she responded, rather shyly with a small smile. He gave her a smile back before walking away.
Immediately, Hyunjin and Jisoo turned to Minho for an answer to his suddenly weird behavior.
"What? I wanted to play games today," Minho said evenly before walking away. The two just raised an eyebrow at him before following suit.
He was definitely weird, but then again Minho was always a little weird and aloof. That's why he was friends with Changbin.
Chapter 3:
A few weeks had passed, and it was finally the weekend of the school overnight trip. The class would be camping for two nights on the mountain doing various activities.
"Welcome," a camp counselor welcomed the students as they got off the bus. The counselor gave an introduction that no one really listened to, gave a briefing of the days activities, and showed them to the cabins so that they could drop off their belongings.
"Girls on the left, boys on the right. There is no going in the opposite genders cabin, and the staff will be in the cabin right across. Meet back here in 20 minutes."
Everyone scurried to the cabins.
Jisoo sighed. The only thing she hated about overnight trips was the overnight part. She had no girl friends and was always excluded from the girly nightly activities. She had no hope that this year would be any different.
Jisoo set up her blanket closest to the door, and the other girls just naturally set up away from her. She would do like every other year and sneak out to meet up with Hyunjin, Minho, and stupid Changbin.
Once everyone had gathered back together, it was announced that there would be a day long scavenger hunt with teams of 5. The first group to win would get a prize.
"Okay, you can choose your teams! Also, each team will have a numbered wristband they can put on one member that after the first hour another team can steal for extra points. After you form your teams, choose a captain to come and grab a camera, list, and wristband. Cell phones are prohibited!"
After the announcement, everyone started to break off into teams.
"Team up as usual?" Minho suggested to Hyunjin and Jisoo.
"Sure, but does that have to be on our team, too?" Jisoo asked, pointing at Changbin.
"Unfortunately, yes," Minho bowed his head apologetically. Changbin smirked at her, and Jisoo stuck out her tongue at him in response.
"Do you have room for one more?"
Jisoo looked over to her side, and her eyes met with Seungmin's.
"Oh, yes, I believe so. Right, guys?" Jisoo asked the other guys.
The all made similar sounding grunts that Jisoo just interpreted as a bunch of yes'. So she nodded her head at Seungmin that it was okay for him to join.
He gave her his usual heartwarming smile, which forced her to look away because her cheeks started to heat up.
Lately, Seungmin had been going out of his way to approach Jisoo, and all though she knew he could never be interested in her like that, it still fed into her ever-growing crush on him.
"Should I be Capt -"Seugmin started to say but was interrupted by Minho.
"I will be Captain," He glared at the other guy.
Jisoo never noticed it until this year, but Minho and Seungmin didn't seem to like each other at all. She wanted to ask what the deal was but decided it was better not to pry.
Minho grabbed the items and returned, and the group debated who would wear the wristband.
Jisoo ended up wearing it because Changbin insisted that she was so much of a freak that no one would dare go near her to try and take it. She didn't argue that point because honestly, he wasn't that far off point. he just put a bit harsh.
"Why are you so mean to Jisoo?" Seungmin asked Changbin as they entered the woods.
"I'm not mean, I'm just too honest," Changbin responded before walking in front of everyone else.
"Why do you two let him be mean to her?" Seungmin asked Minho and Hyunjin next in a more demanding voice. "Aren't you supposed to be her friends?"
"Yes, and because you are not her friend, you couldn't possibly understand the dynamic here," Minho responded coldly before joining Changbin.
"Jisoo insults him just as much," Hyunjin added, unbothered, taking a picture of something before crossing something off the list.
"Sorry," Jisoo whispered to a taken aback Seungmin.
"Ah, no, I'm sorry. I just think the way Chanbin talks to you is too harsh," Seungmin whispered back.
"It's just how we have always been. He's really not that bad," Jisoo responded, feeling some unnecessary feeling to defend her bully
The group continued on, managing to cross things off on the list, although having Seungmin in their tight-knit group was a little off-putting.
"Hey!" Another group called out to them. Hyunjin's head immediately snapped up, and a scowl overtook his usually chill expression.
"Han Jisung," Hyunjin muttered. Han Jisung was in the other class this year. Hyunjin and Jisung have hated each other since birth, much to their mothers (who have been friends since highschool) disappointment.
"Hey, guess what? It's been an hour," Han spoke, as his group approached them. Jisoo started to shrink away, knowing the other boys intent.
"Where are you going?" Seungmin asked as she inched towards the trees, putting her hands behind her back.
"So what?" Minho said to Jisung.
"Who has the wristband," Jisung asked, flashing the one he was wearing.
Jisoo, Changbin, Minho, and Hyunjin all made eye contact and came to an almost instantaneous understanding of what was about to go down.
Without warning, Changbin charged towards Han. As the tank of their friend group, it would be best to have him try to steal their wristband. Hyunjin took off left, and Minho went right. Seungmin ended up following Jisoo, who disappeared into the trees.
Although they had a decent head start, Jisoo could hear the footsteps and yells of their pursuer.
"This way," Seungmin whisper hissed to her, grabbing her hand and yanking her behind a big tree.
Jisoo flattened herself into the tree as Seungmin closely hovered over her to avoid being caught.
She couldn't tell if it was from the running or being in such close proximity to her crush, but Jisoo's heart was beating a million miles a second.
It was probably from both.
Jisoo risked looking up, only to be met with Seungmin's face, centimeters in front of hers.
He had his arms on either side of her, resting against the tree. Their eyes were locked in a sort of trance, neither daring to speak and break the silence.
They stayed like that for what seemed like forever before they were interrupted by Minho.
"Hey," Minho called out to them as he approached. "They're gone. You can separate."
Immediately, Seungmin stepped back, and Jisoo practically bolted towards Minho. Both of their faces were burning red from not only the embarrassment getting caught like that but also the indecent thoughts running through their minds. Not to mention the glare they were getting from Minho.
The group reunited shortly afterwards, and they continued on with the scavenger hunt. Jisoo and Seungmin didn't really talk, but they kept sneaking glances at each other, their eyes saying what their mouths couldn't.
They ended up coming in 3rd place for the scavenger hunt, and Hyunjin was happy because they beat Han, whose team came in 4th.
So that was nice.
Chapter 4:
Jisoo ended up sneaking off and meeting with the guys a little ways into the woods by a stream later that night.
"Hey, you made it," Hyunjin said as she approached him, Minho, and Changbin. "Where's your boyfriend?"
"Boyfriend?" Jisoo asked as she sat down on a rock, grabbing one of the beers Changbin smuggled onto the trip.
"Yeah. The dude who's been following you around all school year like a puppy," Minho said, rolling his eyes.
Jisoo gave them a confused look. Somebody had been following her? Who?
"Seungmin," Changbin laughed. "God, you're stupid.
"Seungmin is not interested in me," Jisoo rolled her eyes. No matter how much she wished he was, she wasn't delusional enough to believe it true.
Although thinking back to earlier behind the tree, it almost seemed like a possibility.
"Sure," Hyunjin chuckled.
"You should stay away from him," Minho said. "You could do better."
"Better? Better than Seungmin? Who would be better than Seungmin?" Jisoo asked. Seungmin was literally the perfect boyfriend material.
She only got an eyeroll from the guys, and they decided to change the subject.
Later on in the night, after they were all a bit tipsy, Changbin had stolen Jisoo's phone and was trying to figure out her password.
"Stop. Give it back," Jisoo demanded, chasing after him. "You will lock me out for 24 hours again!"
"Come and get it," Changbin taunted, waving the phone back and forth in the air.
Jisoo grabbed onto a chain he had hanging around his neck, pulling on it, while trying to reach her phone.
"Hey, stop that! You'll choke me," Changbin ordered.
"Give me my phone then."
"No!"
"Then no!"
The two were now at a standstill, glaring daggers into the other, then Changbin gave her an evil smile.
"Let go," he ordered again. "Or I will kiss you."
Jisoo looked at him weirdly for a moment, slightly taken aback, but then met his gaze with a smirk. His threat wouldn't work on her. The two could hardly stand each other. In a million years, he would never kiss her.
"Do it," she replied evenly. "I dare you."
However much to Jisoo's surprise, Chanbin leaned down and planted his lips on hers.
For a second, Jisoo was in shock and couldn't move. Then she immediately let go yelling out in disgust and started to spit on the ground.
Changbin just smirked at her, but Jisoo was roaring with rage. How dare he take her first kiss. And how dare he even kiss her at all.
Jisoo meant to launch herself at him, fists ablaze, but was held back by Minho while Changbin made his getaway.
"I'll go after him," Hyunjin offered before bolting after the other guy.
Minho convinced a fuming Jisoo to sit back down and helped her calm down a bit.
"I am going to kill him," Jisoo spat. "Why would he think that's okay?"
"Well, you did dare him..." Minho started but was immediately shut up by her glare. "I mean, yeah, that was uncalled for."
"That was my first kiss, and it was taken by a guy who doesn't even like me."
"Ha," Minho let out a chuckle. "You think he doesn't like you?"
"What do you mean?"
"Changbin likes you. That's why he's always picking on you like that."
"No, he doesn't. That's ridiculous."
"How would you know?"
"Nobody has a thing for me. I'm a bit of a weirdo."
Minho's head snapped up, and he looked her right in the eyes.
"You are not. I think you would be surprised by how many guys do like you."
"Who? Who likes me. I can't think of any," Jisoo responded.
"Well, I can name at least three."
"Then name them."
"Well, Changbin, for starters."
Jisoo scoffed and rolled her eyes at him.
"Seungmin would be the second," Minho continued.
"You are reaching. Neither of them are into me. Who is the third?"
Minho took a deep breath before grabbing Jisoo's hand.
"Me. I like you," he replied.
"No....."
"I've liked you since middle school, back when Hyunjin had art club, so me and you would always hang out together after school alone. I always walked you home, even though my house was on the other end of town. I used to tell the other guys at school that you and Hyunjin were dating because I wanted them to stay as far away from you as possible. And the candies you would find in your coat pocket every day were from me. I always wanted to tell you but never had the courage."
Jisoo just stared at him, the words not really processing.
Did Minho really confess to her? Was this a dream?
"You don't need to respond or give an answer. I know you like Seungmin," Minho continued suddenly, shy, looking down at the ground. "I just wanted to tell you. Just in case you maybe liked me too. And before it was too late."
Jisoo wasn't sure of how to respond. She had always thought of Minho as a friend and nothing more. And she never even so much as entertained the idea of him liking her or vice versa.
"Hey, I'm back with your pho -" Hyunjin said as he ran over to them but cut himself off, noticing that there was a weird tension in the air.
Jisoo let out a dramatic yawn and stood up.
"I'm tired. I'm going to bed," she spoke in an almost monotone voice. She snatched her phone from Hyunjin and started walking back to the cabins. Hyunjin followed after her.
"Are you okay? What happened?" He asked.
Jisoo quickly threw a glance around her to make sure Changbin and Minho were not following behind.
"Minho told me Changbin and Seungmin both have a crush on me. Then he confessed he also liked me."
"Oh."
"You don't like me too, do you," Jisoo asked, suddenly nervous. She hoped not. Hyunjin had been her best friend since forever, and she had no idea what she would do if he liked her as well.
"You wish," Hyunjin laughed.
"Oh, thank God," Jisoo let out a breath she just realized she had been holding while awaiting his response. "I would have killed you if you did."
"What are you going to do now?"
"I don't know. What should I? I could never go for Changbin. I've always liked Seungmin, but the thought of him liking me back terrifies me a bit. And I have never considered Minho, so I don't know how I feel about him."
"Hmmm," Hyunjin thought a moment before responding. "Just do what feels right. Don't think about it and worry yourself senseless. When the timing is right, everything will work itself out."
"You're right," Jisoo agreed.
However, after they said goodnight and went seperate ways, it was hard for her to fall asleep, plagued by the never-ending what ifs and made up scenarios.
Chapter 5:
The next day was full of more activities, and Jisoo spent it doing her complete best to avoid three guys.
Seo Changbin because she was still absolutely pissed at him for stealing a kiss.
Lee Minho because of his sudden confession last night.
And Kim Seungmin because the mere idea of her longtime crush actually liking her back terrified her.
Avoiding them was harder said than done, however. Changbin kept approaching her, making kissing faces at her.
"If you don't stop, I will report you for sexual harrassment," Jisoo finally snapped at him during lunch time.
"Jeez. Chill out," Changbin replied, but he stopped finally now realizing that he crossed the line.
Minho kept looking at her. Even though he said he didn't expect a response to his confession, Jisoo knew that he did want one and probably wouldn't back down until then.
Seungmin just kept doing the same thing he had been, inviting himself into their group. And every time he and Jisoo's eyes met, both of their faces flushed, their mind instantly going back to the tree.
In the afternoon, Hyunjin found Jisoo hiding in a supply closet.
"Okay. This is ridiculous. You can not keep avoiding them forever," He said to her.
"Watch me," Jisoo replied evenly. She could not do confrontation. Whenever she had a problem, she usually preferred to run away from it until it went away instead of actually dealing with it.
"Jisoo, you are hopeless," Hyunjin told her before leaving.
Jisoo knew that he was right and should listen to him, but she just couldn't. At least for now, she would be able to have some peace of mind.
Or she thought.
The supply closet door opened, and in stepped Seungmin.
"Hey..." he spoke, closing the door behind him and sitting down next to her. "I saw Hyunjin come from here and thought you might be here."
"Ah....haha, yeah," Jisoo responded, looking at the ground awkwardly. She was convinced the universe was punishing her for whatever reason.
"Are you...uh.. avoiding me?" Seungmin asked after a moment. Jisoo risked a look up and froze when their eyes met, like a deer caught in the headlights. He saw right through her. Then again, her attempts hadn't exactly been subtle.
"I'm sorry, I have a lot on my mind right now," Jisoo apologized.
"Like what, maybe I can help?"
"Like you," she whispered. "And Minho. And Changbin."
Jisoo ended up explaining the events of last night to him.
"So... Do you know who you like?" He asked her after she finished her story.
"What? I mean, I don't know. I didn't think anyone liked me. It's too overwhelming."
"That's alright. But Minho was right. I really do like you, too. You've been on my mind for a while now."
"Since when?" Jisoo found herself asking, her heart suddenly racing.
"Last year, on the last day of school," Seungmin started. "You were sitting on the steps with your headphones on outside of the school. The wind was blowing cherry blossom petals and were just sitting there with your eyes closed, soaking it all in. I thought you were so pretty at that moment, I wanted to go up to you and talk. However, Hyunjin and Minho showed up, and you left with them."
"Really?" Jisoo asked. She couldn't manage to say anything else. Her heart was beating too fast and too loud for her brain to respond properly.
"Really," Seungmin replied with a warm smile on his face.
His confession made her feel differently from Minho's. This one made her feel lightheaded and stirred the butterflies in her chest.
It was him. Jisoo liked Seungmin. She was sure of it.
"Do you.... like me?" Seungmin asked, suddenly a bit shy.
"Yes," Jisoo replied almost instantly, her voice barely above a whisper. Was this real?
And then his face was suddenly so close to hers. His lips only centimeters away for her lips.
"Jisoo?" He asked, suddenly sounding breathless.
"Yes?"
"May I kiss you?"
Jisoo looked at him for a moment, all thoughts running out of her head.
Almost instictively, she nodded her head yes, and Seungmin's lips crashed into hers, with a sort of yearning that she never thought anyone could have for her.
Jisoo kissed him back with as much force and passion as he kissed her.
I choose him, Jisoo thought to herself as the kiss deepened. It was no longer a question or mental debate. This felt right.
Seungmin felt right.
The end.
