The Truth
Dragonfly
"Are you awake?" I recognized the voice as Spectre's. I opened my eyes and was instantly met with moonlight gleaming through the skylight.
"Spectre! Yeah, I'm awake! What happened? How long was I out? I found you in Soul Sync and then..." I tried to remember. "Nothing. I don't remember anything."
"You were asleep for three days. Don't worry, you didn't miss much. I'm glad to have you back. I owe you a bedtime story."
"Are you sure?"
He took a deep breath and ruefully smiled. "Yes. Now, get comfy before I change my mind." I snuggled down in the covers. "Cloud was older than me by six years. We were like a yin-yang symbol. I was smaller, smarter, more agile. He was bigger, stronger, better at forgiving. We arrived together. When I felt all alone, he was there. When one of us was threatened, the other would come to their aid. Cloud put me in wizard school, helped me learn about the world, and in the end, let me live in this world. Even at the cost of his own life. He would always tell me: 'I'm your big brother, Cloud! And I'll protect you from anything that wants to hurt you until the day I die, I promise.' Heh. I never expected him to keep it. I promised too, just not verbally. I can't count the amount of times he helped me, and I can't count the number of times I couldn't or didn't help him. I..."
He trailed off.
"Go on."
"I miss him every day. I quit using magic after the mining accident years ago, and now it's hurting people." He was silent for a beat. "Ya know, pal, you can't understand how this feels. Knowing that one day, I'll explode and kill everyone I love. It... It just makes it hard to make and keep friends, ya know?"
I shook my head. "I know. And yet, I don't think I can ever completely get it."
"I meant what I said. You're both so infuriating, because I can't hide my flaws from you. No matter how much I want to. No matter how much I try. I want to show you this." He held up a tape recorder. "This is all I have left. Well, this and his jacket." He fidgeted with the zipper on his...his brother's jacket.
"He sounds just like you." I smiled when the tape started.
"I know. Shh." I listened to the message, my eyes blurring with tears. I was the one he told his brother to watch for. I'm Perseverance.
"That's me." I whispered.
"Yeah. I know." Cloud went on to describe Oak's issue with Leaf. "I'm supposed to save your brother." I said. "I don't know if I can. But I'll try! I have to!"
"I know you can do it." He smiled.
"Okay, but first, you need to forgive yourself for what you did. Sure, it's totally your fault."
"Gee, thanks."
"My point is, you can't let it drag you back!" I hopped out of bed. "You're a wizard who doesn't use magic. You're a murderer who only killed once--"
"Twice."
"Who's the second?"
He was silent, deep in concentration. "Couldn't tell you. I can't remember."
"Anyway, you owe this to yourself!" I saw the sky begin to get lighter. "And I know the perfect way to start! Come on!" I ran stealthily up the stairs, through the front door. "Come on, come on!"
I heard him laugh. "I'm coming." He poked his head out the door and drew in a breath.
Before us lay the prettiest sunrise. The colors melded together in a manner that not even Van Gogh could replicate. Oranges and pinks celebrated the coming of the sun, stars disappearing one by one. "This is what I do when I feel helpless or lonely. Just watch the sunrise and remind yourself that, no matter what happens, tomorrow will always come. Got me?" I smiled. He pulled me into a hug.
"Thanks, pal."
