The Medic

Dawn

"Wake up, darling! Wake up!" He opened his cool blue eyes. "Ah, there you are! I'm Dawn, your expert medic!" I said.

"What happened? Where's Lilith?!" He tried to get up from the bed, but was still way too weak.

"Relax, Your Highness! Your sister is fine! She's been pacing the floor since you came to my house. She really cares about you, ya know." I smiled.

"May you please send her in?" He asked.

"Gladly." I stepped outside the door, where Spectre had gotten up from his seat and was attempting to calm the Princess down. "Lilith, your brother wanted to see you." She smiled tiredly and gracefully stepped inside. I sank into a chair and sighed. "What happened to them?" I asked, turning to Dragonfly.

"We don't know. We didn't ask, so they didn't tell us. All I know is that he was pretty banged up when they arrived. Even more so than Lilith. I wonder now what happened?"

"Well, regardless, he's awake and safe now. Good job, boys. I'm sure they're glad you two were there."

Spectre yawned next to me and sat down. "Sorry, I'm just...exhausted."

"You two can sleep here for the night. I won't be going upstairs tonight. I need to stay near the room just in case something goes wrong."

"Alright. Don't work yourself too hard." Spectre said, getting up and heading for the stairs.

"Thank you, Dawn, but I think I'll stay up with you." Dragonfly sat with me.

I allowed my mind and mouth to wander back to the first time I'd had to treat an unconscious person. "I had been so young, and my mentor was still with us. Spectre and...has anyone told you about Cloud? Meh, too tired to care. Spectre and his older brother Cloud had washed up. Spectre was unconscious. I'll never forget Cloud's screams for help. How could I? I was only five at the time. It was scary. Anyway, we..."

"Spectre has a brother?!" He asked. I snapped to attention. Crap! Me and my big mouth!

     "Yes. He does. Or did."

"No way! Why haven't we met yet? I guess there are always surprises on this island! When can we meet him?"

What do I say? "We can't meet him."

"Why not?" Realization sparked in his eyes that the reason wasn't a good one. "Dawn?"

Use Intimidation! "Yes, darling?" I saw fear enter his eyes.

"Um... Actually, I think I'll just ask around! Thanks!" He charged up the stairs.

"Don't tell Spectre I told you. He prefers not to talk about it."

"Y-Yes ma'am!" I knew he would bring it up later, but I let him go. I tried to console myself. What's the harm in a bit of gossip? He was going to find out anyway. Better his secrets than mine. I still felt horrible.

At just that moment, Princess Lilith walked outside. "He fell asleep. I hope that's okay." She said.

"It's fine, sweetheart. Go upstairs and get some shut-eye. You've done enough."

     "Okay. Good night, Miss Dawn."

"Don't do anything shady with Spectre, you hear? That's my stuff you're using!"

I derived little joy from making her blush. "We won't do anything weird, I promise." She hiked up the stairs. I smiled despite my true feelings. Fear, Anger. Dammit, Dawn. I asked myself. What did you do to us tonight? I put my head on the fabric of my blue dress. What will happen to us? What will Spectre do when he realizes that the secret he tries to hide is creeping up on him?
