forty-three

The first thing Jungkook does when he wakes up his text Seokjin a cheerful happy birthday message, accompanied by several exclamation points and the overuse of smiley face emojis. He continues texting the elder all throughout the morning, even as he hurries to get ready for his first class, and his eyes are still glued to the screen as he heads out the door.

Seojun and Jihyun are waiting for him, and the brunette greets him with a peck on the cheek and a "Who are you texting?"

"Seokjin hyung," Jungkook replies, glancing up at the two girls. "Today's his birthday!"

"Do you ever stop talking about this Seokjin guy?" Jihyun asks, brushing her newly shortened, bright blonde hair out of her face. "You're always talking about him. If I didn't know better, I would think he's your boyfriend."

Jungkook frowns and opens his mouth, but it's Seojun who gets the words out first. "Shut up, Jihyun."

"What, jealous?" Jihyun teases, dodging a kick from the other girl.

"You're so annoying," Jungkook whines, sending a quick text to Seokjin before slipping it into his pocket. He is about to slide his hand into Seojun's when Jihyun unceremoniously wedges herself between the couple, throwing her arms over their shoulders.

Seojun beams at the pair. "I am fully aware of that, yes."

"...could change the world." Jungkook's fingers fly across the keyboard as he types out the last sentence of his paper. After giving it a quick glance over, he saves it once, twice, three times before exiting the page and leaning back in his chair and sipping at his mineral water.

His mind wanders over various topics as he cracks his knuckles, and then it hits him.

Big Bang.

Tickets for the concert went on sale seven hours ago.

Jungkook's heart deflates as he hastily goes to the website, knowing that the tickets have most definitely been sold out, and it drops to his toes when he sees that, indeed, they are all sold out. "No..." he moans, hands covering his face. "Why didn't I remember earlier?"

And it seems as if the universe is mocking him when he gets a text from Seokjin that reads:

Seokjin hyung ❤️: hey, did you buy tickets for the big bang concert???

Jungkookie: Nope.

Seokjin hyung ❤️: why?????

Seokjin hyung ❤️: did you forget??

Jungkookie: Yep.

Jungkookie: Fuck my life.

Jungkookie: I'm gonna commit

Seokjin hyung ❤️: don't say things like that!

Jungkookie: You're not my mom.

Seokjin hyung ❤️: I'm not too far from your apartment complex right now, can I come over??

Jungkookie: Sure, but not too long.

Jungkookie: I have to study.

Seokjin hyung ❤️: it won't be long, don't worry!

Jungkookie: Come on over, then. I could use a break.

Seokjin hyung ❤️: see you in a few!

The ding of the doorbell sounds a few minutes later, and Jungkook's eyes are immediately averted to the white gauze wrapped around Seokjin's hand. "What happened?" he asks, alarmed, and gently takes the elder's hand, frowning at the faint spots of blood seeping through.

"Oh, nothing," Seokjin responds nonchalantly, chortling at the incredulous expression the teenager shoots at him. "No, seriously. It looks like I got it from a fight or something, but I was actually just cutting an apple when the knife slipped off the counter, and I- very stupidly, if I may add- tried to catch it. And this happened."

"Well, it's not nothing if you couldn't just slap a Band-Aid on it," argues Jungkook. "You needed gauze! It-"

"The reason I put gauze on it," Seokjin interrupts, "was because I was out of Band-Aids, and ointment for the cut." He steps inside and closes the door, and Jungkook spots the small plastic bag in his uninjured hand. Seokjin lifts the bag to Jungkook's face. "See?"

"Yeah, I see," Jungkook laughs and pushes the bag out of his face. "Now let me see that cut," he adds, sobering up. He takes the bag and places it on the kitchen counter and gingerly unwraps the thin white material, wincing when Seokjin sharply sucks in a breath of pain. "Sorry."

"It's fine," Seokjin says quietly. He reaches over and pulls out the small tube of ointment out of the bag to begin applying it onto his hand, but the younger snatches it out of his hands.

"You're injured, let me do it."

"It's just my hand," Seokjin lets out a bark of laughter. "I'm not handicapped, I can do it myself." But Jungkook refuses to listen and finishes treating the wound, brushing Seokjin's other hand away as he tries to help.

"There," Jungkook says as Seokjin's freshly treated hand drops to his side. "All done."

Seokjin pinches Jungkook's cheek with his unmarred hand. "Thanks, Jungkookie."

Scoffing, Jungkook pushes Seokjin's hand away and rubs his cheek. "That hurt." When the elder merely shakes his head and ruffles Jungkook's hair, he questions, "Why did you come over, anyway?"

Seokjin's smile widens. "Give me your laptop, I want to show you something."

Jungkook receives a slap to his head from Seokjin when he makes a crude comment about the something being sexually explicit videos, and yet another one, this time sharper, when he curses loudly. "You're not my mother, stop acting like it!"

Seokjin only laughs and wraps his arms around Jungkook, resting his chin on the boy's shoulder as they awkwardly shuffle to Jungkook's bedroom, where the laptop is located.

"Okay, gimme." Seokjin takes the laptop and refuses to let Jungkook see what he's doing. "I'll show you, just wait a second." When he finally lets Jungkook see the screen, the boy is greeted with the ticket site. He frowns when he sees that Seokjin has managed to acquire two tickets.

"You bought tickets. So what?"

The elder blinks a few times. "They're for you."

"Me?" Jungkook is confused. "Why would you buy tickets for me?"

"Why not?" Seokjin shrugs. "You could go with Seojun, maybe."

Jungkook narrows his eyes. "Are you stupid? You bought the tickets; why would I go with someone else? I'm going with you, hyung."

Seokjin exhales. "Good, I was afraid you might actually go with her."

"No, don't be dumb," Jungkook argues. "I wouldn't go with noona if you bought me the tickets. I mean, she is my girlfriend, but that doesn't mean I have to do everything with her, right?"

"Right." Seokjin nods, and a brief silence falls between the two. "So," he says, voice brimming with excitement, "we're going to the Big Bang concert!"

"Yeah," Jungkook says slowly, lips beginning to upturn in a wide smile. And then it hits him, really hits him, that they're going to be attending a Big Bang concert, and he emits a little squeal. "Holy shit, hyung, we're going to a Big Bang concert!" He grasps the elder's hands tightly, and quickly pulls away when he winces. "Sorry!"

"It's fine." Seokjin straightens out the Band-Aid, and the two lock eyes for a moment before Jungkook wraps his arms around Seokjin and pulls him into a tight hug, eventually knocking both of them onto the floor.

Jungkook adjusts his position so that he's comfortably lying on Seokjin's chest and comments, "Hey, hyung, I can hear your heartbeat."

"Thank you for informing me that I am alive, Jungkook."

The teenager snorts in amusement, fingers subconsciously curling around the fabric of Seokjin's shirt as he nestles himself in the crook of the male's neck. "You're warm."

"...Thanks?"

Jungkook peers up at Seokjin. "I could fall asleep like this. Too bad I still have work to do."

"I should get going," Seokjin says, attempting to wiggle out from under the younger boy, but Jungkook tightens his grip.

"Just a few more minutes?"

"Fine."

They fall into a comfortable silence, Seokjin's chest rising and falling rhythmically with every breath he takes. And suddenly, a thought occurs to Jungkook, a thought that makes his blood run cold.

What if I like Seokjin hyung more than I like Seojun noona?

He eventually dismisses the thought, though, coming to the conclusion that he isn't comfortable enough with Seojun yet to behave as he would with his friends, and it's since he has known Seokjin for longer that he feels this way.

"Jungkookie, I'm falling asleep," Seokjin says suddenly, his voice jolting Jungkook out of his thoughts.

"Oh." Jungkook grins sheepishly and sits up, helping the elder up as well.

"I should get going."

"Yeah."

The pair leave Jungkook's bedroom, and Seokjin gathers up his belongings before fitting his feet back into his shoes and opening the door to leave. "Well, I'll see you later, then."

Jungkook nods. "Yeah, see you." As Seokjin heads down the hallway to the stairs, he adds, "And happy birthday! Again!"

"Thanks!" Seokjin calls back, and waves before disappearing down the staircase.

As Jungkook shuts the door and heads back to his bedroom, a wide grin creeps onto his lips.

"I'm going to see Big Bang!"
