Chapter 5
Lila dropped the flower, startled at my outbreak. Rose looked up at me, and rubbed tears from her eyes.
"Oh, Marinette!" Lila said, her mask going on once again. She smiled at me as she slowly picked up the jewelry. "I didn't see you there." I rolled my eyes and motioned to her hand.
"Doesn't that belong to Rose?" I said. Rose looked at Lila, as she opened her hand.
"Of course. It fell out of her bag when she sat down." Lila said, spinning another lie. "I was about to give it back to her." Lila handed the pin to Rose who blinked in confusion before clipping into her blonde hair.
Hatred rolled under my skin with every word Lila spoke, for nothing made me as mad as Lila's lying habit. The fact she manipulated and used everyone, and no one noticed, aggravated me. She could probably steal the power source to the city and get away with it. Not like I would ever let it happen. I had made it my job to protect my friends from Lila, to save them from getting caught up in one of her schemes. If Lila ever hurt any of them, I don't know what I'd do.
"Are you alright Rose?" I asked, ignoring Lila for the moment. She nodded vigorously. I let out a breath I forgot I was holding. Lila's eye twitched in annoyance.
"Why don't I help you up?" Lila smiled at Rose and stuck out her hand. Rose tentatively took it and was pulled off the ground. Rose brushed off her white dress, and fixed the buttons on her pink vest as Lila picked up Rose's purse. She held it out for Rose to take, and I could feel the tension growing.
"Thanks guys." Rose said smiling before taking off. As soon as she had turned the corner Lila's disguise came off. She smirked and crossed her arms, her eyes glaring daggers into me.
"What do you want Marinette." She asked, her heels clicking as she stalked up to me. She stopped and leaned forward, until her face was only inches away from mine. My eyes narrowed and my hands clenched.
"I would like you to stop hurting my friends." I said, through clenched teeth. She stared at me for a second, until the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Finally she straightened, and smiled.
"How could you think so badly of me Marinette?" Lila said, grabbing her heart and faining pain. "After all I've done for you?" I gritted my teeth and fought to stay strong.
"You can lose the act, Lila. I've seen the real you." I said, holding my head up. Lila cackled, and flipped her hair over her shoulder.
"Oh, Marinette. Your just so funny." She said sarcastically, grinning at me. "But humor will only get you so far." She then jumped at me, reaching for my hair. I threw myself to the side, surprised. Lila narrowed her eyes as she turned back to me, the brown of her eyes black with hatred. Crap, I thought, backing away.
She slowly stalked toward me, forcing me closer and closer to the edge. She smiled evilly at me, pushing her orange sleeves up to her elbows.
"You know Marinette, I might just miss you." She said, eyes alight with a malicious fire. Before I could ask what she meant the ground started shaking, throwing me off balance. I threw my arms out as I slowly tipped backwards toward the edge. When I finally had steadied myself I let out a breath. Then Lila poked me.
"Goodbye Marinette." She pushed, against my chest, as I let out a scream. Everything seemed to slow as I fell, my tears blurring the world. I closed my eyes, as I fell through the clouds, when I suddenly landed on a hard surface.
My eyes flew open in surprise, as my hands gripped the surface beneath me. The world around me was foggy and different, the ground smooth and metallic. I slowly stood, and wiped tears from my eyes. Somehow I was alive, something have caught my fall. I looked around, curious. I had landed on some kind of maintenance platform, though it seemed forgotten. I reached out in front of me, searching for a wall or latter. Soon I gripped the solid object in front of me. Edging along it, I reached carefully out, in hope of something to boost me back up onto the surface.
Ouch! I pulled my finger out of the whole I had stuck my hand in. I stuck my finger in my mouth and sucked the blood off the pricked point, when the wall suddenly moved. I gripped it as it shook and rumbled. It turned slowly, gears whirring until I found myself in a room lined with lights. I climbed off the wall and stepped forward, lights coming on with my movement.
I found myself standing in a room full of gadgets and gizmos. There was a desk at one side with a small box on it and a book. I carefully walked over feeling the floor for pressure points or any possible bobby traps, until I had safely made it across the room.
I picked up the book and blew dust of the cover, coughing. The cover was inscribed in a beautiful cursive. It was titled The Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir. Who are Ladybug and Chat Noir? I asked before sliding it into my open purse.
Shoot, my purse was open. I searched through it, checking for all my possessions. I groaned when I realised my sketchbook had fallen out. It was probably out on the platform, but I was to scared at the moment to go back out for it.
I turned back to the table and picked up the second object, a wooden box with red inscriptions. I marveled at the workman ship on the box. The time that must have gone into it, and the love, made me wonder if why it would be down here. I opened the box, curiosity getting the better of me, and found...
Two lady bug earrings.
