Chapter 1

Notes: M.P.V means Marinette's point of view
A.P.V means Adriens point of view

M.P.V

I stood on the balcony above my bedroom staring out into the great beyond, sipping hot chocolate. The rising sun glinted off of the towers of Aris, sending rainbows to arch gracefully towards the hidden floor miles below. I sighed and turned away from the view, tired of staring at clouds.

The view was always the same seeing we were a floating city. Everyday it was clouds, clouds and guess what? More clouds. Some days I just wish it would be something different. Something that just might lead me to believe Aris isn't alone in the world.

Wow, my thoughts were getting dark, I thought as I took another sip of chocolate. Maybe it's because that's how you feel right now Marinette. I mean you just found out you might not get to go to the school you want.

Oh how I wanted to go to the Aris Academy for Fashion and Design. It had been my secret dream for some time. Only a few people knew of it. I thought I might be able to make it, but now that they might be closing down the school?

What are you kidding Marinette, I thought, sighing. You probably would have messed up either way. They probably would have accepted you for an interview but you would accidentally spill hot coffee on them, ruining their designer clothes. Then they would dishonor you and send you to work in the coal factory. Then you would never become the most famous fashion designer, get married, have three kids and-

"Hey, Marinette! You up there?" Alya, my best friend, called to me, interrupting my train of thought. I smiled at the sound of my friend's voice and the sudden distraction.

"Yeah!" I called back to her.

"I'm coming up."

The top of her head appeared in the trapdoor before she climbed up onto the balcony and grinned at me.

"Ready for the trip?"

I choked on my coco, spilling some down the front of my jacket, as I remembered the upcoming trip to the city's engine room.

"You forgot already didn't you?" Alya asked, handing me something to clean myself off with. "Girl, you'd think by your 16th birthday you'd have learned to write these things down."

I let out a short laugh and shook my head.

"I did, but then I forgot that too." I said taking off my stained jacket, clipping it onto the clothes line beside the drying laundry.

"Well, I'll let you get ready. See you in a minute." Alya said before climbing back down into my room. I leaned over the balcony for a moment thinking about what awaited. As I finished off my drink and turned to follow Alya something silver glinted across the horizon.

Quickly, I turned and watched as a silver object floated for a second at my eye level. It was about the size of my head, and beyond the riveting circling up and over the rounded edge and across the center, it was completely smooth. I blinked, and stumbled back as I watched the reflection of my bluebell eyes do the same. Curious, I crossed the space between me and it and reached out to tentatively touch the object. The solid metal was bitter and cold beneath my touch and I pulled my hand back just before it disappeared back down towards the ground.

"What was that?" I murmured to myself as I scanned the horizon hoping to see it again. I waited, watching in anticipation for whatever it was. When I could find nothing I sent that thought to the back of my head before climbing down into my room.

A.P.V

I caught my contraption and smiled to myself. It had worked, and it had gone higher than expected. I would have to tweak the intake system to fix that problem, but otherwise it was nearly perfect.

"Dude, are you done yet? We're running a bit low on time." Nino, one of my only friends, asked from one level down the tower. I slipped the contraption into my bag and climbed down to Nino.

"Yeah, I'm done. I was just enjoying the view." I said to him, as Nino takes the first step down the iron beams of the tower

"I don't know what you find pretty about the view of Pari. It's not exactly known for its buildings." Nino commented as he slid down a railing. I laughed and swung down to the next level.

"It's not really the view I enjoy watching, it's more the idea that there could be something else out there. Something beyond the buildings." I said, as I stopped to take one final look at the rising sun. Not that there was really a chance.

The moving city of Pari had been wandering the world for decades and yet it had never found any other city. That probably meant there weren't any others, I thought as I continued down.

"Man, you have the craziest ideas sometimes." Nino remarked, leaping down to the ground. I sighed and went after him.

"Thanks, by the way, for helping me with this." I told him as my feet met the ground. I looked up to see Nino smiling at me.

"Of course dude. Anything for my best man." He said as he started walking towards downtown.  I followed close behind him as we snuck through the backstreets.

We walk in silence for a few minutes, occasionally exchanging glances when needing confirmation on something we saw or heard.

Nino and I originally had a kind of understanding. When I needed to escape my father and my responsibilities he would always be there for me, to help me get out. In return I would fix an object of his that was broken as a favour. It had started that way, as just favours for one another, until Nino and I became close and started seeing each other as friends.

"This is your stop dude." Nino pointed out as we rounded a corner and stopped at the edge of my house, well mansion really. I nodded and gave him a smile.

"Thanks again." I said fist bumping Nino. "I enjoyed our night out."

"No problem dude." Nino grinned. "I'd better be off. Wouldn't want your old man finding me here." He gave me a wave goodbye before running off toward his house.

I smiled at the fading shape of him before I climbed the wall that surrounded my house. I reached the top of the wall and stood on the edge for a second before leaping across to my open window. I landed on the window ledge, teetering there for a second, before I silently jumped down to the floor.

My feet touched the ground and I stopped to listen for my father and Natalie. When I heard nothing I took the bag off my shoulder and unzipped it, pulling out my invention and as I sat down on my bed.

I didn't really know what I was going to do with the invention yet. Not that I could ever use it in public. Father would be furious if he ever found it. That, or he’d want to sell it to the highest bidder. I sighed and lay back in bed as I held it above my head. Maybe someday I could go out with it freely, when I'm old enough to move out, I thought as I turned the orb-ish disk in my hands.

Then something caught my eye. There was a brown oval dried to the edge of it. I sat up and rolled it over so I could get a better look. With closer inspection I recognized what I thought to just be dirt as a fingerprint. How did you get on here, I questioned as I looked over my invention once more.

Both Nino and I wear gloves when we sneak out. That would mean that a third person would have to have touched it. Though that would be impossible. The only time we didn't have it in our hands was when…

No, it couldn't be possible. I put the object down on my bed before I moved back to the window. I stare upward for a moment trying to see anything I may have missed before. I stand there for a moment, my hair shifting in the wind, before I finally ask myself the question I had been pondering for the last minute…

Could there really be people in the sky?
