ScarlettJane6
I've had the opportunity to interview ScarlettJane6 next. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions and giving such in depth answers.
~ At what age did you start writing?
Goodness, there's a question. I took it up in my early teens. I was something of a loner. The world outside wasn't nearly as interesting as the ones I could create
~ I noticed one story on your profile called The Girl Who Loved Two Princes. Is this your first story you've ever written?
It's my first novel. I wrote a few short stories as a teen, but nothing nearly this long until last year, when I finally made up my mind to just go for it. Now it's the first of a trilogy.
~ Where did you get your inspiration for The Girl Who Loved Two Princes?
I think the story has been in my head for a long time, but as Alex said in the movie Alex and Emma, I take from life. The book is a blend of the things I have observed in life as well as things one can only dream of seeing.
~ Being a writer in general, how do you keep on track? (Get past writer's block, stay focused, etc.)
At the time when I was writing the books I honestly had too much time on my hands. I took a break from my studies and just went for it. When I feel like I'm stuck, it drives me crazy. So I go back and reread, rewrite and that usually gets the juices flowing for what should happen next. I try to get into the heads of my characters and remember why I wrote them in the first place. I'm pretty diligent and committed to the craft. So as long as I have the time, focus generally isn't a problem.
~ Do you have a specific updating plan? As I looked at your story, I noticed your first day uploading was June 2nd, and you have thirty-eight chapters uploaded.
I was on wattpad before. I took my books down because one of my friends/fans siddhi2k2 was concerned about my work being stolen. Publishing on any platform, that's always something to worry about. I'm actually back at the request of another writer friend of mine LouisaDiamond. She and I decided to do a deep dive into each other's books and wattpad has an awesome platform for that. Apologies, that's a really long story, but yeah. That's why I uploaded the entire book at once. It's been such an amazing experience so far, trading ideas with another author. My other two books may follow in due course. They're currently on Inkitt as well.
~ As a writer, would you call yourself a planner or a pantser? Or are you a mix of the two?
When I wrote book 1, I was 100% a pantser. Like I just went for it. I was a bit green at the time, so I'm hoping it doesn't show too much. Now, still 90% pantser, because writing is a creative work, an art. Magical things happen when you just let your thoughts flow. But I have learned the wisdom of planning ahead for your plot. Research a basic structure for your plot. Those things matter too.
~ Can you take us through your process as a writer?
My process. What's my process? Shoot, I'm a leave me while I work kind of person. Once I start the world around me disappears and I'm not satisfied until I have completed the chapter. I'm generally in that chair for 5 to 6 hours once I begin. Like minimal bathroom/snack breaks and that's about it. If things aren't happening, I spend some time pacing or rereading, like I said and then hopefully that works and I get back to it.
~ Can you give a reason why you think readers should give your stories a try? What makes it shine against others?
So right off the bat, I want to say my stories are pretty intricate. I spend a lot of time on details and trying to make my characters as realistic and life-like as possible. What's definitely fascinating to a lot of people is the bi-linear storytelling. With my books, the chapters alternate between past and present events. I have no idea why I write this way. I just do. My books are royal romances, with undertones of action and adventure. Even though I write about royals, I write for the ordinary, every day person. I have been told my characters are relatable. I blended what was historically viewed as royalty with a modern day setting and it was great fun. I've had comparisons to Jane Austen novels and been told my books are like modern day Bridgerton. So if that's your thing, my books will definitely appeal to you. I'm a huge romantic. Lol, someone once told me there's too much romance in one of my novels, so yes. Definitely all about the romance. What else can I say? I poured my soul into these characters. They're flawed, they're definitely not perfect and they show off that good looks and riches don't always equal happiness.
~ What made you join Wattpad and have you found it to be helpful to your writing journey?
Wattpad will always be my first love as far as writing platforms go. I met my good friend siddhi2k2 on Wattpad. She's a big part of why I now have a trilogy. She just spurred me on the whole way and was always like yes, please, write more. So I'm super grateful to Wattpad for facilitating that reader/writer relationship. It's an honor to have started my journey writing here. It's definitely been rewarding and helpful to have joined.
~ Lastly, what advice would you give to new and old writers?
I'm a new writer myself. At least I consider myself to be. So to my fellow new writers, definitely write what you want. Write because you love it. Not for fame or money or because it's popular. If it takes off, great. If not, it's still this special world that you created and no one can take that from you. To older writers, remember why you started doing this. Whether it was to inspire or just escape, what you put out there most likely affected someone. Maybe not a lot of people, maybe a great many. Either way, don't forget your roots. Give back if you can. Help those of us who want to learn and grow. I think in doing so, you can only hope to learn and go more. Back to basics is always the best way to keep capturing hearts.
Thank you so much again! It's been a pleasure to get to know another writer on the platform. I'm very amazed that you're aiming to write a trilogy. Sequels are hard enough, but a trilogy is very impressive, so I wish you luck and hope to see the end of the series one day! If you guys have the time, please check out The Girl Who Loved Two Princes. I myself have only read one chapter, but I hope to really get into it one day.
