Chapter Twelve
What Cerra had failed to mention was that the hole in the chain link fence was that it was incredibly small. He slipped through it just fine of course, and Darius was able to slip through fairly easily with a couple of wiggles, but Sky found it very difficult. He was a knight back in the 1700s after all, and he was certainly built like one. He got through it after shoving at the dirt with his shoes while Cerra and Darius yanked on his arms, but the end of his cloak was torn pretty badly when it got caught on the fence as he went. He glared at Cerra as he grabbed the end of the fabric. The teen rolled his eyes in reply.
"I'll buy you a new one if we make it out of this." He hissed before he turned and poked his head around the bush they were hiding behind. He stared at the Capitol building. A few lights were on but that was normal. People here were often working into the dark hours of the night. That was where all of the illegal deals went down, after all. The backyard was empty just as he expected, and in the corner furthest from them, close to the dumpsters, was an entrance to the base disguised by a manhole. He stared for a moment, trying to calculate how long the run would take. It would take him less than a minute at best. But for Sky, it would take him a bit to catch up on him. His gaze flickered up the windows. If someone happened to look out, they would be screwed. All he could do was hope that that didn't happen.
He looked back at Sky and Darius, who was staring at him. Sky was completely still, knelt down on one knee. Darius was crouched down, rocking back and forth on the soles of his feet. He looked anxious and Cerra certainly didn't blame him. He'd never admit it, so as not to look weak, but he was nervous too. "Okay, it's a straight shot there." He turned around completely so he could crouch down. "Sky, you and I are the only ones going down there. Darius," he looked at him, "I need you to go to the sewer entrance I mentioned while Sky was sleeping. Do you still have the map I gave you?" Darius nodded quickly. "Listen to me very closely." Darius shifted closer.
"There are two guards stationed there." Cerra's voice was low and intense as he stared at Darius. "There are always two guards there. No matter what the weather is or what the day is, it doesn't even matter if it's freaking Christmas, there are always guards there and there are going to be guards there today."
"Get to the point!" Sky hissed. Cerra didn't look at him, staring at Darius instead.
"Darius, you have to kill them." Darius's face paled and his eyes widened in horror.
"... W... What?!"
"Darius-"
"I can't! I've never, I'm a hunter, not a-!"
"You wanted to come, didn't you?!" Cerra snarled. "I told you that you were gonna have to kill some people, and now's the time!"
"Can't I just knock them out?! You said I could knock-!"
"No, Darius! You have to kill them from a tree and if you don't get a killing shot, then they're gonna pull the alarm and Sky and I are gonna be stuck in the base when it goes on lockdown!"
Darius stared at him with wide eyes. "I-I... I can't kill someone..." He whispered. "Much less two people! What if they have a family?!" Cerra glared back at him.
"You wanted to come." He growled. "You said you would be useful. This is the way you can be useful." Sky glanced between the two of them but didn't say anything. "If you fail to do this, Darius, and if somehow I make it out alive, I'm going to hunt you down and kill you." Darius gulped. The uncertain teen he had played Go Fish with in that alleyway was gone now. Cerra's red eyes were angry and he knew he wasn't bluffing when he threatened him.
Slowly he nodded. "Okay." He whispered.
"Don't screw me, hombre," Cerra hissed before he gestured towards the fence. "Now go, scram! The sooner you do it, the sooner it's over!" Darius didn't need to be told twice and he scrambled through the hole in the fence. Sky watched him until he swallowed up by the night, then turned towards Cerra.
"You shouldn't have been so harsh." Cerra glared at him.
"I'd rather be harsh then be dead, Sky," he growled. Sky didn't have anything to say to that. "Come on. We need to get down that hole." Cerra turned towards the bush and, without waiting for Sky to answer, he darted across the backyard. Sky sighed before he followed after, beginning to get used to Cerra running off without warning him. Their footsteps were muffled by the dirt and the gravel as they sprinted across the backyard. By the time Sky had caught up to Cerra, he had pushed the manhole up. Sky came to a stop and his eyes widened.
"What is that smell?!" He hissed. Cerra looked at him and rolled his eyes.
"Our base is in the sewers," he whispered back loudly.
"The sewers?! Oh, hell no!" Cerra glared at him.
"Go down the hole!" Sky glared at him before he looked at the hole. He shut his eyes tightly before he growled and lowered himself onto one of the rugs of the ladder, muttering underneath his breath as he began to climb down quickly. Cerra looked around and after making sure no one had seen them, he followed suit, lowering the manhole down silently. He left it exactly where he had found it, so it seemed like it hadn't even been disturbed.
Getting in was the easy part. Now they had to get his dagger.
