Always be with You
They met when she saved him by using herself as bait for a krill. She knew she could die but she was about as selfless as they come. Besides, her friend had told her they had to keep the cycle of kindness going if they ever wanted to have a chance against the Darkness.
Once the krill (also known as a dark dragon) was well enough distracted looking for her in a place she wasn't, she went over to the Child she just saved, "Hey, are you ok?"
He nodded, "Thanks to you. Why did you do that? Save me, I mean."
She smiled kindly at him, though he couldn't see her facial expressions with her mask on, and then, pulling him to his feet as he had frozen in fear, said "Well, one of my friends told me that to win against the Darkness we have to be kind. We have to combat the night the Darkness brings with our own light. More figuratively than our actual light," she gestured to her glowing eyes.
"Your friend sounds very wise."
"She was. I miss her horribly... You see, she died saving a group of younger Children. I found her right before her light went out. She told me to never give up. I don't intend to," she nodded, even with the sadness edging its way into her voice. "Come on, I want to show you something."
From that day on, they were inseparable. The bond they had as friends grew stronger until it eventually grew into love and their lights grew brighter with each passing day. They would run through the Forest, hand in hand, and it seemed at though the darkness hid from their presence. Maybe it really did.
In their world, only the purest of love could create a child as they were wired to survive and be the strongest they could be. When they grew a bit older, they had a daughter, and she immediately became the other half of his world he didn't even know was missing. They were happy, raising their family, even in a world full of dangers. Unfortunately, their happiness didn't last.
It happened on the day they defeated the Darkness, it was the reason they defeated the Darkness. It came with a cost. The Children of Light gathered after realizing how they had to recreate the Balance.
"We have to reverse their dark effects with our light. That has to be the way it works."
And if it doesn't? If we sacrifice our brightest Lights to the Dark only to have it fail?"
"You can't think like that, Egorik, that's how the Darkness got out of hand in the first place."
"You're right, Focat," he sighed, "Well, I guess it's time to spread the news. But we can't make them sacrifice themselves, they have to be willing."
She nods, "Of course."
And so they spread the word, the Prophets created the trials to test for the brightest Lights. Of course, both he and she were some of the brightest, but they had a child, one of them had to stay. She decided he would. As bright as he was, she still outshone him, and, being selfless, she decided to let him stay with their daughter.
So the day came when she was to die.
"Please," he whispered, "Don't leave us."
She smiled, then took off her mask so he could see it. He'd never seen her face before, her eyes were glowing and the tears in them were shining like the most exquisitely cut diamond, "I will always be with you," she picked up her child and held them both close to her, "Always."
And then she was gone. Her clay body was lifeless without her Light, her cape a dull purple when before it seemed to have a light of his own.
"Mommy?" the chibi whispered, softly brushing her hand against her mother's face, "Mommy, wake up."
He pulled her away, "Mommy isn't going to wake up."
She looked up at him, "Why...?" Even as young as she was, she had seen death. She'd seen it everywhere. She was beginning to recognize it in her mother. "M-Mommy's... gone."
Tears rose to his eyes as she buried her head in his shoulder and sobbed, her tiny shoulder shaking, "It's ok. It'll be ok," he whispered to her, even as his flaming tears ran into her hair and turned the white strands golden.
Many were lost that day, but it worked. The overwhelming presence of Darkness was once again balanced with the Light. The cost that seemed so expensive brought back a world lost for so long. Everyone knew a Sacrifice, but in their place they knew five who were saved by them.
Once again their world thrived. Once again, families were started and grew. But for the first time, the world came together for one common goal, and they stayed together.
