Metal Monster
I make my way back to the office. Everyone staring as I pass by. I keep my head forward, not giving them any satisfaction. I do not need this right now. I've just had a life changing experience and I can't tell a soul. I'm going to lose my mind. I mean how does Optimus and Special Agent Fowler expect me to keep such a secret. There are giant robots living on this planet, just fighting a war and no one knows about it. How have we not seen them. I mean they do have pretty clever disguises, but still. They are freaking giants. Six of them are living in some old missile silo just outside the town of Jasper. Just hanging out. No one ever happens to see them come out or go in there? I mean come on!
I'm so busy having a conversation in my head, that I almost miss the hallway I need to turn down. I'm sure I was making faces too. Considering there are more staring at me now, and I mean they stopped their conversations to watch me. I give an embarrassed grin and back up a few steps. An about face and I am stepping down the hall. My office being way at the end, makes it a very long walk. I am so ready for this day to be over with.
"Field op is in a week, we need get on it. Captain already had plans laid out. We just need to work on times and the counts." Tsgt Hops starts the second I walk through the door.
"Oh yeah, I guess we should do that." I sigh.
"He wants us to do a class on the gatling guns."
"Of course he does. Who is our newest Senior Airman? Didn't we have a few that just got promoted?"
"Senior Airman Herby just picked up last month."
"Have him do that class. I know Staff Sargent Tank would want to do it, but I think someone else should have a turn."
"I'll go let them know now then."
"Roger that."
I watch Tsgt briskly walk out of the room. Peace and quiet. Now I can focus on all the other paperwork. That's if I can focus. I still got Autobots and Decepticons on the brain. I really need to get this paperwork done.
----------------
A week later and I am currently hunched over my desk, filling out the last of the paperwork. They have planned a firing range while we are out there. More shit I have to do. More paperwork. I had to have a chat with Tsgt Tank, who was not happy to not be giving the Gatling gun class. It has been a frustrating week. I also haven't heard from Dreadwing all week. I haven't talk to the Autobots either. I've been to busy to try and check in with them. Its not like Agent Fowler hasn't been around. He knows I'm alive. But I was hoping to hear from Dreadwing. It's not like we talk every day, but I'm sure he would have checked in or something. I hope Megatron hasn't done any harm to him. I would not be very happy. More pissed off than I am now.
"The first trucks are getting ready to roll. Paperwork finished?" Tsgt Hops asks, sticking his head into the office.
"Signing the last bit now." I sign my name for the thousandth time and stand up. "I'll go take this to Captain now."
"Sounds good."
We both walk out of the room. He continues to walk straight, and I step to the right to the neighboring office. One that also has a officer hunched over paperwork. Only he looks a little more stressed out than I do. I think he even has a few gray hairs beginning to show.
"I have the last of the files for you." I say loud enough for him to hear me and get him to look up.
"Good. I'll take them." He reaches his hand out.
I put the papers in his hands and take a step back. Waiting for him to speak again.
"Your group is first to go. If you are all set, then get out there. I'm leaving on the third run."
"Yes, Sir."
I about face and leave the room. I grab my bags from my office before heading out to the tarmac. My platoon is grouped together at the front of the convoy. Drake walks towards me the moment he sees me walk out. I haven't spoken to him all week. I've actually been avoiding him. He has been trying to talk to me, cornering me somewhere, but I've been able to get away each time. I know he wants to know what happened. He wants the truth and I want to give it to him, but I don't know how to tell him without him freaking out.
"Hop in boys. Let's get out to the field." I say the moment he opens his mouth to speak.
He snaps his mouth close and hesitates before following me. But he follows me. I have him riding in vic one. I'll be in vic three. I know he's not happy about not being separated, but I can't be in the same vic with him right now. Even if its only an hour drive. To much time to ask to many questions. Ones I don't have an answer to yet. I just want to make it through this field op with out a hitch. I just want it to be a boring field op. Just like they are supposed to be.
I throw my bag in the back of the hummv, then I take get into the passenger side. Our first stop is the pumps to make sure the trucks are filled, then we will head out.
--------------
I stare out the window as the drive drags on. It's a bumpy, slow ride and I am not allowed to take a nap. The ride has been silent so far. No radio chatter and no one talking in here. I tried to make some conversation, but no one wants to talk to an officer. We are boring and know nothing of the enlisted life. Sometimes I wish I would have gone enlisted, but I like flying to much. Have to be an officer to fly. Even though I'm not flying right now. It would be so much better if I was. As I look at the window, off into the distance, I see something flying. The sun glares off the cockpit, so I'm unable to see the colors. It's high up in the sky, speeding through the clouds. My heart flutters a bit. There is no doubt in my mind that it is Dreadwing I see up there. I was hoping to hear from him before I left for the op, but sadly he never texted me back and I left my phone back at the base. I won't have any service, so I see no need to bring it with.
I continue to watch the jet. I don't know where he's going but I wonder if he can see me. I won't know until I get back. He doesn't stay straight for long and he veers off to the right and is gone in a blink of an eye. That's when I realize we are close to our destination. We drive off the concrete road and head down a dirt road. Thick trees hang over the dusty path. The truck rocks back and forth from the rough terrain. Its enough to make someone with a light stomach want to vomit. After what feels like forever, we finally get to an open area. It's very empty, of course it won't be much longer. It looks so peaceful; I wish it was going to stay that way.
The trucks all stop in a row and everyone begins to get out. I'm out as quick as I can. I'm done being stuck in a box. Especially with all this gear on. I'm wearing my flak and Kevlar. I also have my weapon, which, in itself, is hefty and in the way. I also have my clipboard with all my stupid paperwork I must have. The manifest and lists. Lists of gear, weapons, other boring things. Every day I question why I became an officer. I honestly thought there would be more flying involved. Sometimes its just driving and keeping others in line.
I tell the troops to start unpacking and the first thing to get up is the tents. We got to get the generators down and have the field ready for when the rest of the convoy gets here. They should be here in the next few hours. Not a lot of time, but there is enough of us that we can get it done.
"Ma'am! Ma'am!" I turn towards the shouts coming from one of my men.
"Yes?"
He's huffing and puffing from something other than running. "There's something coming. Look."
I look to where he is pointing, and I see a large mass coming this way. I'm not even sure how to describe the mass. Its large, wings out the side, something like a canon form on the top, nothing like an American plane or any plane I've seen. I have my suspicion on what it is.
"Get in the trucks and get out of here! Now!" I order. My voice echoing throughout plains.
It takes a moment for everyone to move. "I said go!" They all scramble.
The suspicious plane dives in and sends a few blasts, sending half my men flying. None of us have real ammo to shoot at this thing. It does a swift swing around, shooting down to the ground again. I jump out of the way just in time for the blast to hit the ground. Dirt and grass cover me as I hit the ground, hard. I look up at the thing and I see colors of silver and purple. I'm going to have to have words with Dreadwing.
"Get into the trucks!" I scream at the last remaining.
They stumble to get up, but they go. Another blast hits the ground and as the dust settles, I see one running towards me. I realize its Drake and I try and get him to turn around. I'm waving my arms at him, but he's not changing course. I watch the metal beast bring itself around again. As it's coming down, I hear the roar of another engine. It's racing fast into the field, dust and dirt flying behind the wheels. I recognize the red and blue paint job. I look back for my men and most of the trucks are flying out of here. To which I breath a sigh of relief. Drake gets to me just in time to see Optimus transform and fly up to the aircraft. He lands on top of the craft with a loud clank. The plane tries to shake him off, but it doesn't work. Instead Optimus attacks with a fierce growl and it does a nosedive to the ground.
Drake holds onto me as we watch the thing transform into a metal giant, bigger than Optimus. It stares down the Autobot leader, a growl playing on its metal lips. They don't say any words but begin to attack each other. They pull out the biggest swords I've ever seen, and they clank and clash against each other. Their feet digging holes into the ground as they try and keep their stance.
"Optimus, always there to protect the small bugs of this planet." The metal monster sneers.
"You have no right to attack the humans, Megatron." Optimus scorns.
"So that's Megatron." I whisper to myself.
"Megatron? Optimus? What the hell is going on, Jane?" I guess I wasn't as quiet as I thought.
"Drake, you need to get out of here. I think Megatron is after me." I try and push Drake away, but he doesn't budge.
"No, I'm not leaving you. What are these things?" He asks in a panicked voice.
"I can't explain right now. You need to get to safety."
"So, you can get crushed. No way. Your coming with me. Lets go!" He grab s my hand and begins to drag me towards the last hummv.
"Lieutenant Jane! Get out of here!" Optimus bellows, his sword clashing with Megatrons again, holding tightly to keep him back.
We get to the hummv and Drake pushing me into the passenger side. I don't have time to buckle as he races off. Bouncing over the field from the high speed that he's attempting to gain from the vehicle. I attempt to watch from my window. Watching the two giants fight. I don't even know how it ended as we get back down the dirt trail to the road and race back to the base.
