mother duck. 02

[ notes/ something short just for fun ! ]

Cafe Park's most busy hours were in the morning and during rush hours. Adults enjoyed a coffee and muffin before work, and some children wanted to get a snack after school. Though, most customers had come by to see the kind woman over the counter. Her welcoming smiling was what brought everyone back for another coffee or slice of cake. Not only that, but she'd always spoil the children with sweets free of charge.

It was just a bit after lunch, and the building wasn't very busy - so Park took her break about now. As much as she'd like to stay working, she'd promised her husband that she'd take enough breaks. A miscarriage was hard to heal from, and she needed to sit down and have something to eat here and there. To get some fresh air, she'd taken a can of soda from her own stock and went to the nearby park.

This easily became a terrible idea. As she sat on the bench in the shade of a blossoming tree, the white haired girl took some sips of her drink while watching other people. Almost all of the groups consisted of happy families with their newborns, or month old children. Grandparents with their grandchildren, mothers with their strollers, and fathers pushing their young ones on the swing.

All of these god damn people who'd gotten so god damn lucky. They all got their chances at a perfect life and probably didn't even realize. Without even noticing, Park's hands were starting to tremble. The mother not far away who'd set her daughter in the flowers and took a photo - made the white haired girl lower her head. Absolutely everything about this, she hated. Her pathetic attitude, the fact she'd managed to lose a child, and the depressed face she'd see on her husband every day. He'd always try to mask it and smile for her, but she knew well enough it was all a lie. She couldn't even be a good wife to her loving husband anymore, Park rendered herself useless.

All she wanted was to be a good mother, and she'd already failed at it before even being given the chance.

It was so unfair. This was so unfair. . .

"Park-san?" A small voice suddenly caught her off guard, and she quickly lifted her head. It was only Shindou, and he was holding onto a soccer ball in his hands. He'd stood a step or two away from her, and could easily tell she was on the verge of crying.

"Sh-Shindou." The female breathed out, managing a smile for him. "Is school over already?" Had it been that long she was out here lamenting for?

"Yeah. . . Is everything alright?" The brunette furrowed his brows. Park merely sniffled and wiped at one of her eyes.

"Yes, I just have allergies, that's all." She responded, returning her hand back to the half finished can in her lap. "Don't you have practice with the others?"

"No," Shindou shook his head with a small smile. "We had exams, so we're taking a break from practice. . . Are you on break?" He asked, the smallest glint of hope in his eyes. When Park nodded, he lifted the soccer ball. "Let's play for a bit!"

She couldn't possibly refuse. So they'd rested their things under the tree and went off into the grass to kick around for a bit. Shuffling the ball by their feet, making passes and attempting to steal from one another. At one point Park had just abandoned the ball to lift and spin the shorter teen. His laughter was enough to cheer her up.

The next day after school hours, the bells of the cafe door had jingled - signalling a customer. Park happily greeted them while her back was turned to the entrance, she was currently making a coffee. Shindou scampered up to the front counter and waited for her to turn around.

"What can I ge- Shindou!" The white haired female perked up, smiling brightly. His arms that were behind his back slowly presented a bouquet of flowers. A gorgeous plethora of soft coloured peonies.

"For you. . ." With the smallest tinge of pink staining his cheeks, the brunette handed the flowers over to her. The young woman was immediately overwhelmed, but she gladly took the flowers. After a moment, Park placed them down to run around the counter and squish him in a hug.

It would take a while for her to heal, but even still, she was sure that everything would be okay.
