[ notes/ THROWS ALL MY FAVOURITE FICS HERE ]
Elbow propped up on the table, and cheek resting on a fist. Jin must have fallen asleep. A pen was neatly tucked into his fingers on his other hand, which rested on a set of documents. As much as he liked going home and throwing himself into bed, Jin decided to take a few overtime shifts for the month - two things being the reason why. Number one, who didn't want a little extra money? As for the second reason, and most important, there were two kids in particular he wanted to watch over. Sure they'd just be sleeping the entire night away, but, just in case if anything happened, he wanted to be the one to look after them. None of the doctors had any protests, in fact they welcomed him to take overtime.
A few knocks on the door managed to wake him up, and his lime green eyes tiredly trailed over to the door. One of the female nurses stood there, she must have been concerned.
"Doctor Jin, did you fall asleep?" The woman asked. She was a few years older than him, but young nonetheless. Jin squinted his eyes for a moment, before stretching his arms over his head. He gave her a simple nod, and she smiled to herself. Ah, all the nurses took a liking to him, it was obvious - but he wasn't very good at dealing with them.
"Let me know if you need anything." She muttered, before taking her leave. He felt kind of bad, forgetting to thank her for waking him up. What if something happened and he was dead asleep? Speaking of something happening, one of the monitors started beeping. He quickly rolled his chair over to the computer, and shook the mouse around.
One of the patient's heart rate had spiked, and being as paranoid as he was, Jin immediately left the office and rushed down the hall. Shuffling through his pocket, he pulled out his access card and tapped it against the door, quietly pushing it open and stepping inside.
"Hey bud." Jin mentally let out a breath of relief, seeing his patient was okay. It was a kid. Nosaka Yuuma was admitted about a week and a half ago for brain surgery, and if Jin had known about Nosaka's case earlier, he would have been seriously pissed. Nosaka explained that he was delaying treatment and taking millions of antibiotics to stay alive and intact - just for the sake of some stupid case against his school's headmaster.
The poor kid just visited a small walk-in clinic, and refused to be admitted. If Jin knew about this, then, things would have went much smoother. He wouldn't be able to force Nosaka into the hospital, BUT, he could manage to get that bastard of a principal dead in minutes. Then there would be no need to save his illness as evidence. In the time Nosaka was here, Jin managed to build a relationship with the poor kid, it was a huge part of his job to do so, after all.
Nosaka was breathing a little heavy, sitting up and staring at his lap. After a few minutes, he looked up at Jin and frowned.
"Why are you still here? Shouldn't you have gone home?" The red head muttered. He was seventeen years old, but very mature for his age, a very capable young man. Although, after a while in the hospital, he was rather vulnerable and anxious - but who could blame him? He seemed shy with the nurses and doctors, very lifeless, simply put, Nosaka had depression as well.
"Sometimes I work overtime." Jin responded with a small smile. "Does it hurt anywhere?" He asked, but Nosaka shook his head. "Bad dream?" His voice went a little quiet, but bingo, that was it. All the kids got bad dreams, no matter what kind of sleeping medications they were on. Most of the kids didn't like to talk about it though, the main reason being shock. Having a bad dream, then waking up, only to find yourself. . . Here. You're not in the comfort of your own home, you're in a hospital, and you've been here for more than a week. You're here because you almost died. It's almost as if the bad dream isn't even done yet.
"Thank you for checking on me, I'm fine, Jin." Nosaka choked out, faking as smile as best as he could. Jin heaved a small breath, pushing himself off the wall and stepping over to the red haired boy.
"If you need literally anything, just hit the button okay?" Jin gently rubbed his back for a moment. It's a little easier to take care of the younger kids, they don't mind hugs and head pats, but the teenage boys were a bit more difficult.
One of the other patients was a younger boy, he tended to get panic attacks at night too. As soon as Jin would get beside him, the poor thing would just cling. He just needs a few hugs, some water, and that was that.
"How come you always win!?"
"I'm older."
"That's not fair! When I'm older then I'll beat you."
"But by then, I'll be even older."
". . . Jin!" With an obvious pout marring his features, Taiyou piped up, looking over at the very 'busy' doctor. For two hours a day or so, the inpatients were allowed in the back garden. You know, for fresh air and all that. Jin usually liked to take them out, especially because he could take his ds and no one would really care. Nosaka and Taiyou were just playing checkers in the grass (Taiyou liked sitting in the grass).
"Mmhm?" Jin raised his brows as if that was an acceptable response. Right after that, Taiyou started sputtering excuses about how Nosaka was cheating and it was unfair, and he should at least let him win once. Nosaka had to use a hand to stifle his laughter.
"Taiyou, why don't you recruit him onto your side." Nosaka chirped, resetting the board just to look busy. The two kids looked over at Jin, how could you say no to those eyes? I mean, Nosaka's were easy, but Taiyou, not so much.
"Okay fine. I'll play." Shutting the hand system, he stood up from the nearby bench and crossed his legs down on the grass beside the little one. "Nosaka, get ready to meet your doom. I don't think you know this, but - I am the master of checkers." As dramatic as you could get, Jin cracked his knuckles. Taiyou seemed into it though. We're forgetting Nosaka is kind of a genius here, like a certain brother we know all too well.
"Alright then." Nosaka took the challenge like a man. "Ladies first."
"Did you hear that-!? He just called you a girl! Now you can't lose!" Taiyou desperately tugged at the doctor's sleeve. If you lose them we will both be demoted to females that Nosaka would not even date.
"Alright then, let's play rough." Jin huffed, but his tone was nowhere near serious. With that, Jin made the first move, then Nosaka went, and this repeated for a while.
Our winner? Nosaka Yuuma. What did you expect? Now both Jin and Taiyou were making up excuses.
"No, no, that was bullshit. I haven't played in years, let's go again." Jin piped up.
The red head just propped an elbow up on his knee and rested his chin in his palm.
"Mmhm, keep going. . . I'm listening."
