Chapter 10 |

It's moments like this where she wishes for some female friends, or even better a mother to help her through the hard times. To hold her hand and tell her she looks beautiful. Adelaide is standing in front of her mirror in her dorm wondering if this dress was the right choice.

She was wearing a simple black dress, that was cut in a baby doll design, it was cute but was it a college party?

She sighs, throwing herself on the bed.

"This is why I never go to parties." She groans into her pillow and takes a moment to breathe.

Is it weird to message Paxton? She shakes her head, after class yesterday he has been ignoring her emails and messages the one-day tutoring lesson is all he needed. She kept all her messages professional but nothing got a reply out of him. She decided that the email she sent an hour ago was the last one.

Her phone rings with the alarm she set for herself. Time to head to the party, she planned it so she was getting to the party in about half an hour hopefully she will be able to slide right into the party without anyone noticing.

She sits up, fixing her hair around and making sure none of her make-up smudges.

"No time to turn back. This will have to do." She smiles at the reflection before shaking her head, grabbing the hardly used purse and leaving in pair of converse. The party is behind the team's house there's no way she would be able to wear heels through that.

The dorm is quiet but Adelaide's not surprised normally she's one of the only few spending her Friday nights in it, but for the first time she's a part of it.

She sees some girls ahead of her, they are all wearing tight dresses and giggling amongst themselves.

"How did you get these invites?" One of the girls looks towards the middle girl. She smirks in reply.

"Captain has taken a liking to me." She winks at the others and they all gush about her, trying to get on her good side now that she's fucking Sam.

Adelaide can't help but roll her eyes, she doesn't look at them as she speeds walks around them.

She doesn't want to be some gossip column so if she wants a real scoop she's not going to get it by listening to them.

The night has turned cold as she walks out, the breeze picking up around her and throwing her slightly styled hair around. She smiles into the air, hopefully, no one will notice the sweat building on her forehead now.

"We should have brought scarves. Something to wrap around ourselves later." The girls behind her give loud giggles at their friend's words.

"Don't worry we won't need them." One of them says in a sly voice and the laughter doubles.

Adelaide walks at a quick pace to the team's house, the campus is packed with people, drinking and stumbling around already. Heading to some party after pre-gaming in the dorms.

Suddenly Adelaide wishes she had done the same. A little liquid courage might be great for her.

She hasn't been to a party since high school and none of those was exactly fun for her. She never really fit in with her peers, even worse in high school when she was still trying to find herself.

She sighs at the memories and heads around a corner and the large team's house comes into view.

Sir Andrew Clearwater's home, was expanded and renovated of course. Apparently, on his deathbed, he bequeathed the house to all future team members. It seems like bullshit, a way to make sure the team has the best house in all the schools.

She was a little jealous, imagining all the history in that house wasted in the team.

She shakes her head, looking up at the beautiful white home it sits on the top of the only hill on the campus, the large bay windows looking out over the whole school. Always watching.

"You came?" Someone pops up beside her, scaring the absolute shit out of Adelaide in the progress.

It takes three long seconds for her heart to leave her throat and look at the person. Another five seconds to realize it was the freshman girl Jade looking at her with a strange expression.

"I was invited?" Her words come out as a question but Jade just shrugs.

"Yeah but the whole team like hates you. I wouldn't show my face." It's Adelaide's turn to shrug now.

"Who knows maybe this party is what we need to bury the hatchet." It's a lie but Jade doesn't need to know that.

At her words, Jade looks over at her, a knowing smirk on her face.

"Right well ... I understand now." Jade winks at her. They reach the front of the building and Jade pulls her hand. "Party's out back."

Adelaide follows silently behind her, half wishing she had come up alone, then she would be able to pretend she didn't remember and at least get a small glimpse of the house. Maybe she will pretend to use the bathroom later.

The side yard is filled with junk, old beer cans and rubbish is thrown haphazardly, the items looking like causalities of past parties. Jade steps over everything confidently her hand still clasped on Adelaide's wrist.

They finally make their way through that battlefield to find the open backyard of the team. There's no back fence instead the yard pours right into the thick forest behind it. Even though the space is filled with people and things she can imagine the old times, she can practically see Sir Andrew chopping wood next to the forest.

She shakes her head out of the thought and takes in her surroundings.

It's both exactly what she thought of a college party and nothing she had ever imagined before.

It felt like she was heading right for an iceberg in the middle of the ocean.

In front of her, there was a large number of .... Girls. Just girls, of course, there were the team members and a few of the other jocks of the school but for the most part, it was girls.

Girls drinking, girls dancing, girls swimming ... girls doing drugs off of a table while the boys cheer them on.

Adelaide stops in her tracks, forcing Jade to let go of her and come to a stop up ahead.

Jade looks at her and sees the confusion on her face before shaking her head.

"Don't worry you get used to it. You just need some liquid courage. Grab a cup over there and drink it." Her voice is stern as she walks away.

Adelaide does what she says, heading towards the table filled with cups and a large punch bowl.

She's grabbing the cup before she finally stops. Her eyes quickly find Jade whose currently sitting on the lap of a jock smirking around her.

"What the fuck happened the shy girl?" She says it out loud not expecting an answer but one comes anyway.

"The party." The voice is deep and familiar.

Adelaide turns around right in front of the table beside her Paxton is staring down at her. His eyes heated as he takes her in.

"What are you doing here Adelaide?" His voice is stern as his eyes bore into her.

"I'm at a party what do you think I'm doing?" She motions towards the red solo cup - a cliche - and the table in front of them.

In response he takes a step closer, blocking the table from her.

"This isn't a party for you Adelaide. You should leave." He doesn't hold any joking nature in the way he sternly leans over her but she can't help but laugh.

"Your joking right?" He just watches her, and her laugh cuts short. "Your fucking joking right Paxton? You've talked to me like three times, made me help with your school work but you can't even talk to me around your team members and now I can't be at a party?"

She glares up at him, the same iciness in her eyes that he's currently throwing at her.

His large hand comes down on her arm, holding her to him ever so slightly. Just enough for his warmth to crowd over her fighting off the wind's icy breath.

"You can be at a party ... just not this one." His eyes bore into her before quickly glancing around.

Probably making sure no one is seeing him talk to her.

She shakes her head.

"Sorry Paxton but I was invited here like everyone else and I'm going to have fun." She pushes past him, back towards the drinks table. He doesn't let go, instead holding tightly to her as he spins. She can feel his chest pressing against her back.

He bends down and she feels every single movement as he backs behind her. She doesn't breathe let alone move.

His breath is on her ear as he whispers to her.

"Don't say I didn't warn you." He snatches her cup out of her arm, throwing it far away from the pair. "Don't drink the punch."

She almost wants to say fuck him and grab a drink of the punch but an icy feeling runs up her spine telling her this might be something she has to trust him on.

He doesn't move away until she nods her head in a slow agreement. Then he went and the wind takes his place a second later.

She can't help the shiver running through her body. She takes a second to breathe again before turning around.

Paxton is sitting on one of the crusty old loungers someone dragged out. He's talking with some of the guys and she can't help but notice not a single girl is around them.

She takes a moment to look over at him, he's not dressed up for the party, he looks like he had been at the cafe relaxed, comfortable and sexy as hell.

She shakes the thought from her mind and looks around at the others. It's then she notices that while all the girls are drinking and doing drugs none of the guys has anything.

"It's because of tomorrow's game." Someone pops up beside her. A cheerleader, one she recognizes but can't place a name on. Still, she nods her head. "All season none of these boys will touch anything that might tarnish the way they play."

The girl smirks over at her.

"They touch other things. They play in different ways." The girl winks at her before disappearing into the crowd.

Adelaide feels more confused now than she had before she arrived.

She heads into the thick of the party, looking at the drugs placed strategically around, everything from cocaine to marijuana, everything she's heard of all in one place.

Who the fuck is their dealer and how do they have the money to pay for this before every big match?

Adelaide doesn't know what to do with herself, she hovers around tables being ignored by everyone around her.

Until a commotion near the door starts with a shout and then forms into loud cheers. She has to stand on her tippy toes just to see what the reason is.

Walking towards a little makeshift stage is Sam and he swaggers around like the king of the world.

She falls to the flats of her feet. She can't help but keep out of Sam's eyesight. While no one else seemed to care she was here, or even notice her she knows that Sam will be against her being here seeing all the illegal acts taking place here.

She's standing behind a tall guy who has his arms wrapped around two girls, she's able to look through his arm and see Sam as he comes to a stop.

His smile is deadly as he looks around.

"Welcome everyone." He throws out his arms and some of the girls rush over to him shouting and screaming as if he's some famous pop star.

He waits for the silence before continuing.

"Thank you all for coming to celebrate our first game of the season tomorrow. I hope this party lives up to everything you expect from it." He points to a girl doing a row of cocaine he smiles at her. "Also remember to use protection."

He throws something into the crowd and people scramble to pick them up. She's confused, protection?

It's not until one of the girls steps out to grab it off the floor and hands it to the big guy between them that she understands.

A bright-coloured condom packet sits in his hand.

"Holy shit." She says under her breath, looking around at the couples that seem to be popping up around her.

This is a sex party. She realizes with a moment of horror. Fuck.
