Chapter 02 |

By the time Adelaide can drag herself out of bed the next morning she's already missed her morning class. With the next one to start in just half an hour, she knows she has to get to it. She can't put her world on hold because of this article, it was the right thing to do and she believes that.

She walks over to the door of her dorm ready to head out for a quick shower when something at the crack catches her eye. Two pieces of paper hang in the air waiting for her. She takes a deep breath ready for the abuse that's sure to be on the paper.

The first note is just as she expected some abuse sent her way from one of the many fans of the team, she scrunches up the paper and throws it away before the words even have time to settle in her mind.

The second note however is a note from the editor of the school's paper. The words are deep in the paper, the pen leaking through it in places.

Adelaide,

You are requested to attend a disciplinary meeting with myself and the Dean today at noon in the Deans' office. You can not miss it so please reschedule your classes and plans at this time.

We will see you shortly,

Mr Tumms.

"Fuck." The word falls breathlessly from her mouth as she looks up at the clock above the door. 11:34 am. "Double fuck."

The Dean's office is on the other side of campus from her dorm, she needs to leave like 5 minutes ago to get there on time.

She grabs her backpack and throws on some sweats and trainers before she races out the door. So focused on getting there on time she misses the rude glares and words thrown her way. She ignores everything by the large clock tower in the distance that houses the Deans office.

It had rained sometime last night and the grass is still wet from the rain and morning dew as soon as her trainer touches a piece of grass it slides out from underneath her.

She goes sailing through the air, sliding along the grass with no traction or ability to get her feet back underneath her.

Then there's someone in front of her, blocking her path that she can't stop.

"Watch out." She yells but the body in front of her just turns towards her. They open their arms as she falls right into them.

They both tumble down immediately. Him catching her and letting the pair of them fall mostly onto his back, he takes the hit like it's nothing, meanwhile, Adelaide is completely winded from the fall.

"Oh shit." The words are breathless as she slowly gets off the man underneath her.

He sends her a mega-watt side smile.

She can't help but look down at him, he has a cheerful look on his face, that kind of masculinity that tells her more than she needs to know about him. He has wet brown hair telling her that he recently hopped out of the shower, followed by the scent of fresh laundry infused in his clothes.

"Normally I like being on top but with you baby, I'll take the bottom." He winks at her and she can't help rolling her eyes.

His jade eyes shone with mischief like some twelve-year-old boy.

"Yeah no. That's not happening, baby." She gets up slowly and as he tries to get up she pushes him down again. "Anyway I don't like missionary but if that's your deal ... well have fun with it."

He chuckles up at her, not bothering to try and get up again he just smiles through his brown hair up at her.

"Maybe you can teach me a few things then."

A blush covers her cheeks at his words, her mouth fumbles around her next words but she's able to spit them out.

"I have to go."

Before turning on her heel and continuing at a more careful but rushed walk towards the Dean's office.

She's late by a total of three minutes when she finally arrives, the Dean and Mr Tumms look pissed as she enters, slightly out of breath and slightly damp.

"Thank you for joining us, Ms St. James." The Dean's voice rings through the room as Mr Tumms closes the door with a click.

"What's this all about?" Her voice is small even in her own ears but not one to be scared away from a verbal fight she stands up taller bringing an air of confidence her mind isn't quite feeling right now.

"You think you can put this in the school's newspaper without any repercussion?" The Dean's voice is loud as he slams down yesterday's paper with an angry glare on his face.

"Well, yeah I did because I got permission and it went through all the right channels." She looks over at Mr Tumms waiting for him to back her up. "I did this right. I knew what it would cost me to go over everyone's head so I didn't I did it properly."

She says each word slowly, forcing Mr Tumms to look her in the eye at every word.

The Dean turns to the teacher.

"Is this true? Did you approve this ... this slanderous article?"

Mr Tumms face turns red and splotchy as the attention turns to him.

"Well ... No. Not exactly." He turns away from both of them looking down at the paper.

"Do you know how many people we've had ringing the school because of this?" He flicks towards the paper again before grabbing it and ripping it up. "Some alums are threatening to take away funding. Do you two know how the biggest funders are ex-Ice Hockey players? You calling them good-for-nothing abusers could force the school to shut down."

He sends his hateful glare.

"I should have you expelled on this alone."

Adelaide opens her mouth to tell him even with this, even if she did go over everyone's head and publish he doesn't have the right to expel her. No matter what he thinks.

Either way, she doesn't get to reply before the man before she has another hissy fit, throwing all the paper and pens off his table with a yell.

"Instead me and Mr Tumms have decided to take you off the newspaper team."

"You can't do that." For the first time in the meeting, she loses her cool. She slams her hip on the table as she pushes towards the pair. "You can't kick me out of the newspaper, I write the most articles, I even edit everyone's work. There wouldn't be a newspaper without me."

The men smile at each other before the Dean comes around the corner.

"You are awfully full of yourself aren't you Ms St. James? You should do well to remember that you are nothing in this school. Also, remember that there would be no school here today without the Ice Hockey team that you say ruin the school for everyone else."

His words are curt and she immediately realizes her mistake.

"What year?" She blurts out, all emotion out of her voice. "What year did you play, sir?"

He smiles to himself pushing out his too-large chest as if he's some important leader.

"I played my last two years of university in 1988 and 1989. Greatest years of my life."

Adelaide can't help the small chuckle falling from her lips. Immediately the man's face turns red with anger. He looks like he might pop when he finally says.

"What is so funny?"

She puts on a sweet smile as she looks at him.

"I did quite a bit of research for this, 1988 was the first year they lost in ... hmm ... 50 odd years, right? If I remember correctly they didn't do much better the next year either?"

Her smirk turns deadly as she watches the man in front of her sputter and squeaks.

"We - we had a - a whole new team. There was - there was no way we could have won." His words are acid as they fall. He shakes his head and glares at her.

"This is not about me or the team anyway Ms St. James this is about you. Your lack of respect and dignity towards the school and its members past and present have shown you are not a team player, as such you have no right to be on any of our teams or groups. Effective immediately you are no longer a member of the newspaper here. You will do well to remember the rules of the school before you find yourself with no degree and are sent back home."

Feeling quite happy with himself the large man falls back into his chair with a sigh.

"I didn't break any rules you can't kick me out of the paper." He glares up at her.

"I just did. Now if you don't mind it's time for you to leave my office." His words are sent through clenched teeth. "This isn't open for discussion."

She storms out of the office as quickly as she came in. Slamming the door behind her before turning to glare back at it.

This isn't the last he's heard from Adelaide.

She turns back, storming through the silent building before even seeing another person. At the door, the hockey team are leaning against the doors waiting for her. Each one wearing a wide smirk.

"Oh, honey you shouldn't mess with things you don't know," Sam smirks at her. "How about we go back to my dorm and we can settle this little argument the way only adults can?" He winks at her.

She rolls her eyes.

"I don't want to mess with something I don't know. I mean who knows how many diseases are in your pants right now." She walks away to his angry growls behind her.

"You'll be on your knees begging for it soon enough." He yells at her, making the students mulling around them look over at the pair in interest.

Adelaide just puts her finger up towards him and continues walking.

As if she would go anywhere near any of those meatheads not without a ten-foot pole to shove up their asses, of course.

Seriously, this dean and Mr Tumms are bunches of children. I couldn't stand them as I was writing it but god it was so fun to write at the same time.
