Anna of Cleves- Food (c)
Anna enjoyed flaunting her wealth in any way that she could. She enjoyed living lavishly and you certainly wouldn't stop her, sharing her home in her palace in Richmond, watching her use her money how she wanted. One of her favourite ways to prove she was someone of wealth was enjoying freshly caught game, wishing to have the most sought-after meat, mostly caught by her hounds or bought from anyone who would normally sell only to the king and his wealthiest noblemen.
Due to knowing this of Anna, you found it peculiar when you entered her hall for dinner to find her eating bread from a fresh loaf with a new jar of jam, made from fruit from a local village. It wasn't the meal of a peasant, but it certainly didn't measure up to her normal meals that she would have.
"Have you wiped out the English pheasant?" You joked, sitting down opposite her at the table. "I don't think I have seen you eat something unlike that of meat in a long time."
She rolled her eyes at you. "I can afford to get the finest meat from the continent if that is what I wished but the locally caught by my own dogs are always something far better."
"Then why not have that?"
Anna took a bite of her bread and jam, waving her other hand dismissively.
"My dogs are aged, they can still catch an unlucky pheasant, but my men thought it would be best to train younger dogs for the role, so that there's more certainty of the kill," she shrugged.
"What of the elderly ones?" You asked.
"They will stay for now until the training of the pups is done. After that they are wanted in the local village to catch pests or to hunt lesser animals. I care not what they want of them, but it is better than slaughter as most do with aged hunting dogs."
You nodded your head at her. "You have a kind heart. Kinder than most. You are incredibly lucky to have such a life; you know that right Anna?"
She agreed with you. She was married to the king, but he claimed it was a marriage based on lies as she didn't look as he thought she would due to an inaccurate portrait. It didn't mean much to her though, she was given a palace and riches beyond what most could imagine.
"I could have the fate of his previous wives. Forgotten and banished, beheaded or simply deceased. He could have sought a much worse fate than a palace."
"I cannot argue, it is certainly a grand home for a grand woman."
She offered you a grateful smile before continuing with her meal.
