Prologue

"This prom is not my cup of tea. I would rather be up on my roof, watching the stars."

I laughed, almost spitting out the water which I had just taken a swig of, but stopped myself in time. "That's really what you'd rather do?"

My best friend turned her head towards me and nodded, her firm expression indicating just how sure she was of herself.

I smiled at her, my gaze then traveling back up to the canopy of stars that stretched above us; for miles and miles that we could not possibly see. A distant world watching over us, and of which we both shared every Saturday night on her rooftop. "I mean, I'd probably say the same thing."

A comfortable smile ensued from that statement from me, and for a few moments nothing could be heard but the comforting chirping of crickets and occasional squeaking of bats flying far away. A summer night at its finest. The low sound of her voice was soon heard, "I know you would."

I could only smile. She knew me so well, and I was so lucky.

We remained laying on the rooftop for hours, still looking at the stars above us. All those twinkling lights; so near, yet so far away.

Just like this summer memory of mine.

It's always remained fresh. I never fail to remember it.

Though at the same time, it's so intangible. But oh do I wish I could reach out into the great archives of the past and grab it, even though the desire is in as much vain as wishing to reach a hand out to a star and bring it down to Earth with you.

Yet still I dream, and still I wish.

For such distant times to be reality again.
