A Masquerade for A Heist - Part 1

A/N Jesper and Wylan share a soft morning but are rudely interrupted by Kaz requesting them to throw a ball for one of his heists.

The plan involves Jesper flirting, but not with Wylan.

What exactly is this hesit and how does it go?

Jesper Fahey

On par with his guns, one of Jesper's favourite things was getting to wake up beside Wylan Van Sunshine and ever since moving in to the Van Eck mansion, Jesper was happy he got to do that basically every day.

He awoke first today and found Wylan curled into him, wearing one of Jesper's shirt. The slight oversized-ness of Jesper's shirts meant Wylan ended up adopting them as his night clothes. Jesper wasn't complaining.

"Morning, Jes," Wylan murmured sleepily and Jesper kissed the top of his head.

"Hey," he mumbled back and some days they simply got out of bed, some days they hugged and spoke in hushed tones for an hour and some days, like today, Jesper simply kissed Wylan until the demolitions expert was underneath him, hands wandering over Jesper's back and shoulders.

"Jesper," Wylan was muttering, "We need to get out of bed?"

"Five minutes," Jesper said against Wylan's neck.

"That's quick," Wylan commented.

"Prefer a longer show?"

"Definitely."

But the kissing continued until there was a knock at the door. If Jesper or Wylan was wanted when they were in the bedroom, the maids had learnt from unfortunate circumstances to always knock and never actually enter the room. Jesper pulled away from where he was kissing Wylan's collarbone. "Yes?" he called.

"Mister Brekker is downstairs," the maid said.

Jesper groaned. "Tell him to go away."

"I'd rather not risk losing my tongue," the maid muttered under her breath though they all knew Kaz wouldn't hurt anyone associated with Jesper and Wylan.

"We'll be down in two minutes," Wylan said, always the diplomat.

"That quick huh?" Jesper smirked, "I bet we could manage. A challenge nevertheless."

"No, Jesper," Wylan shook his head, "We're just going to go."

"But-"

"Tonight."

"I hate you, merchling."

"That was evident last night," Wylan snorted back with sarcasm.

"Wow."

And they bickered, got dressed and finally greeted Kaz in the sitting room and were pleasantly surprised when Inej was on the seat next to Kaz.

"Inej!" Jesper exclaimed, pulling her into a long hug. He was happy for all that she was doing, but he still missed her. Especially when it was a grumpy-Kaz day.

"I missed you," she said, and they chattered away about everything Inej had done, the slavers she'd brought down and how her crew was treating her.

Wylan had breakfast brought into the sitting room and they ate until they were full. Jesper shifted and threw an arm around Wylan's shoulder, pulling his boyfriend closer and Wylan intertwined their fingers. They shared a smile.

"Anyway," Jesper said, "What brought you here, Kaz? I'm sure you weren't just accompanying Inej. She knows her way here. What business made you interrupt a very busy morning?"

Wylan snorted and Kaz raised an eyebrow, "You can be annoyed at me for interrupting whatever you and Wylan were doing later. We have a job to do."

"Kaz," Wylan protested, "Inej's literally just got here. She needs to rest."

"I'm up for it," Inej said, eyes gleaming.

Jesper gave her a questioning look. "Did you miss impossible heists with Kaz and I?"

"Slightly," Inej admitted, ducking her head. Jesper didn't miss Kaz's look of slight relief. Whatever the hell was going on between Inej and Kaz, it was more complicated the mechanisms of a revolver. That much Jesper knew.

"Right then," Jesper concluded, "What's the plan, boss? Who's our pigeon?"

"Aleks Van Sven," Kaz answered.

"The one who's on the Council?" Wylan inquired.

Kaz nodded. "He's been stealing people's money. Been asking for interest when new shops open. We don't do that in Ketterdam. If someone wants to open a shop, they open it. They don't need permission from the Council. But Van Sven is tricking them. Tricking them into paying interest and giving them false documents that say the Council approves of their shop or some other bull."

"Oh," Wylan hummed, "Yeah, no, we don't do that."

"Exactly. So, we're going to give the money back to the people he stole it from. Of course, we're going to take ten percent off everyone's sum for the work we're going to do to retrieve their money."

"Of course we are," Inej rolled her eyes, "I suppose you've already gotten a plan?"

"Sort of," Kaz said, "Inej and I will scope out the Van Sven mansion tonight. I know that's where the money is, and I know it's in a safe that is unlocked by a series of locks and a key. I just don't know the exact location of the safe, and I thought I'd better not risk it without the Wraith."

"Wow," Jesper mumbled, "Kaz making a decision to avoid risks. That's a first."

Jesper knew the glare he received was as friendly as Kaz's personality could get.

"Jesper and Wylan, make arrangements to throw a grand Council ball."

"What?" Jesper and Wylan asked at the same time.

"Willow Van Sven, the wife of Aleks, holds the key to the safe. But she doesn't step outside the ridiculous mansion for anything except fancy parties. So, we throw one. When she's there, we lift the key. It's on a bracelet she always wears. Some sentiment."

"Any idea as to how we're going to lift the key?" Wylan asked, already exasperated.

"Jesper is going to charm his way to the key."

"Absolutely not!" Wylan shot up from where he sat, "I'm not having my boyfriend flirt with someone else. Absolutely not."

"It won't need much. Just dance with her. Guide her to the bar, get her a little tipsy, and lift the key."

"No," Wylan said resolutely.

Jesper had to admit that Wylan was ridiculously more handsome when he was this upset that Jesper may have to flirt to someone.

"Yes," Kaz snapped, "Wylan will be at the bar, once Jesper has the key, it'll go to Inej and I and we'll break into Van Sven's house."

"How am I getting the key to you?" Wylan asked, still sulking in Jesper's embrace.

"We'll be there somewhere."

"Not good enough," Jesper said with a slight grin, "You'll have to attend the party."

"No."

"Then Jesper isn't flirting with anyone but me," Wylan put in, crossing his arms.

Jesper didn't know what had changed, but Kaz seemed much less stern after the auction had passed. You could have some semblance of a joke with him and Jesper would take that after two years of pure brutality.

"It's the easiest way to hide," Inej said thoughtfully.

Kaz threw up his arms and huffed, "Fine."

"And when the party starts," Wylan started to add, "I'm getting the first dance with Jesper."

"We'll be wasting time," Kaz said harshly but Wylan wasn't budging. Jesper really did like this side of Wylan Van Sunshine.

"You've all lost your damn minds," Kaz snarked before he stormed out of the mansion. Inej stayed for a while, chatted and then she decided to join Kaz at the Slat, so naturally, Jesper pulled Wylan a little closer.

"Hey," Wylan muttered.

"You trust me, don't you?" Jesper asked.

"Of course, I do," Wylan said without thinking, "It's not the thought of you flirting. It's if she does anything back." He actually shuddered at the thought.

"I'll keep her back," Jesper promised, "And once Kaz gets the goddamn key, you'll have me for the whole night. We'll be in suits and everything. You in a suit... That'll probably be a sight I could get used to."

"We need to find suits. Up for some shopping?" Wylan asked, a teasing glinting in his eyes.

"I'd be up for anything with you," Jesper said, glancing at Wylan's lips. Wylan didn't miss it.

"Tonight."

Also any ideas for how a Kanej first kiss will go? With their complicated relationship, I don't want to do a crap job of it.

Love, IC x
