iii | zug
"Zug!" Ellie jumped up an and down, holding onto Natalie's hand as they waited, watching the train pull into the station. "Zug! Zug!" She laughed, looking up to see if her mother found the train just as funny as she did. "Zug!"
"Yeah baby it's our train," she giggled. She smiled a smile she'd never really felt before; a mixture of pride and purpose, combined with love and admiration. And just general happiness.
"Mami, Ich bin müde" Ellie started to whine and get fidgety. Nat had learnt that was usually said towards bedtime, with her almost asleep, but then followed by a defiant 'nein' whenever Nat suggested bedtime as a option. She reached for her mother to pick her up and started to cry the second she did.
"Hey, hey darling, it's okay, it's okay, we can sleep," she stroked her hair, "can you try and tell me what's wrong?" She fumbled to get her phone from her pocket as she carried them both to the train. "Was ist los?"
"Ich, ich bin so müde und ich möchte Kuscheln von Mama und es ist zu laut und ich möchte nach Hause gehen und in meinem Bett mit meiner Decke schlafen,"
Visible confusion clouded over Natalie's face. The young girl was muffling into her mothers side, so even to a native speaker that would have been relatively in audible. The computer couldn't process it and Nat rocked her as she tried to piece together the few words she understood to form a coherent answer, then to try and formulate a response her daughter could understand and comprehend.
"I think she's tired," A young man seated in front of them turned around, "And she wants cuddles from her mum and wants to go back home and into bed," he summarised, with a smile, for the blonde woman.
"Thank you," her voice hung with gratitude, "Can you explain to her that we're going home? And we can do all those things?" A hint of desperation clouded her voice as she pleaded, begged for him to help her.
"Of course, whats her name?" Noticing her distress, he offered a warm smile to the woman,
"Ellie," she continued to stroke her hair, that proud mothers smile flooding her face as she did so, smiling more as she saw and felt the girl relax back into her arms at the man's words. Natalie too felt herself captivated; but whether that was his speech or his language she couldn't determine; perhaps it was just him.
"Thank you," she whispered, Ellie drifting nearer and nearer to her sleep haven, "I'm sorry, I don't know your name. I recognise you, a-as in I see you often on this bus- oh i mean train, i never quite asked for you name."
"Trent," he smiled softly, "And you?"
"Natalie," a giggle ran across her lips "Why'd you help me?" She glanced down at her now asleep daughter, then back up at the man.
"I have a daughter, who struggles with english, I couldn't not not help." He smiled softly, then rose a hand to place on her cheek, powering off his phone, concealing the message from his girlfriend.
