No3: Life Is Strange
For a more relaxing experience filled with beauty, drama and fascinating characters, go for Life Is Strange. It is an episodic graphic adventure game where you take experience life through the eyes of Max Caulfield, an 18-year-old photography student who discovers that she has the ability to at any moment.
This leads her to try and make a difference in her life and the lives of those around her. This then leads her down a rabbit hole, having to deal with corrupted families, criminals and a missing persons case that is as mysterious as her brand new powers.
The game is a remarkable show of wonderful small town and country side vistas, coupled with a charming sound track and great writing. The story starts off like any highschool drama; a scrawny little nerd of a girl Max in class and the next few scenes we get to see the various archetypes that come to define this genre of story. From the class queen and her frenemies to the weird one, the bullied one, the jockey and so on.
The game has a charming peaceful feel to it with a soothing, stylised colour palette giving a very surreal aesthetic to it all. Coupled with the subtle, charming music it almost feels like delving into a dream and finding yourself in Max's body while she lives her life rewinding and fast forwarding time to make things better for all.
However, karma strikes when the true repercussions of Max's actions hit home and a crisis spirals out of control. Everything is connected in the game and there are clear nods and references to the butterfly effect that the game makes as the story progresses. A single decision to do one small action or not to do it may result drastic effects on what you run into later on, especially when it comes to interacting with other characters.
This all forms into one great narrative with optional timelines, endings, and opportunities to change it all. What's more is that the game goes about time travel in a really clever way, turning certain sections of each scene into puzzles that require Max's powers to get right and progress in the game. For example a person might run into an accident or you might miss the moment something was accessible and can no longer access it. With Max's powers you can wind back time, move objects and set things up so that you get a different outcome in the present.
With your guidance Max must navigate the drama filled early days of her highschool life in order to reach the best possible outcome. He is a timid little girl with a good sense of what she thinks is right and wrong who now has to deal with nightmarish visions of a disastrous future. Perhaps she was given this power over time for a reason.
Overall Life Is Strange is a wonder thematic way to spend your time getting lost in an alternate life far from most peoples' realities. The characters and scenes of the game are all so well written and have many layers of entertainment and meaning to them.
