Chapter Twelve: Louis (Lover) Ending
I watch as Clementine, Louis and Violet walk in different directions. Within a split second, my heart pulls me towards Louis. So I walk after him. I enter the music room with Louis playing the piano quietly. The door squeaks as I shut it and approach him.
"So, what's this project you needed me for?" I ask.
He presses a key on the piano, the noise is not pleasurable. "Sounds awful, right? We gotta tune it, that's why I need you."
I press the keys as he tells me to and the pedals.
"Now blow on the strings."
"What?"
"It helps set them in harmony, blow on them."
Reluctantly, I do. He starts laughing.
"And that did nothing because that's not at all a part of how you tune a piano." He smiles goofily at me and sits down.
"I can't believe I fell for that." I chuckle as he starts playing the piano again.
"What song are you playing?"
"It's one that I wrote."
"What's it called?"
He sighs, "I don't know yet." He stops playing soon enough, "There, first time played. We should mark the occasion."
He uses a knife and carves an 'L' into the piano, then hands me the weapon. I carve my initial beside his and add a heart around it. He smiles at me as he takes the knife back, then sighs.
"Hey so, I'm gonna dig myself into a deep hole from which I'll never emerge. Cool? Cool. Time to get serious."
"Serious?" I question, "Are you feeling okay?"
"Not really, nope. Thanks for being here. Coming here to help me with my project, even after everything I put you through. And everything I had to work through, for myself. Everyone hears the jokes, the piano and then after that, they stop listening. You didn't."
Here's your chance idiot, say it!
"Um well.. I- I like like you. As in more than a friend." I reply.
His face turns into pure shock.
"Oh- did I say something wrong?"
"Uh no-" He coughs into his hand, "When you said you like-like someone during the game, I was hoping it was me. And it is. Holy shit, it's me!" He smiles while looking down at the piano, "Figured out what to call the song. Clementine, obviously. You know, because I like fruit and I like you even more so..there. And I gotta say, out of all the things I saw coming, you having a crush on me was not one of them."
"Shut up and kiss me."
For a few seconds, our lips danced together before we were rudely interrupted by Ruby.
"(Y/N), you out here?"
"Guess that's my cue." I get up and leave Louis alone in the music room.
AJ and I talk for a little bit up on the lookout deck.We stare at the herd of walkers for a few minutes, talking about really anything that comes to our heads. He wants dibs on Abel's head and I allow him to. But soon, AJ spots something. It seems to be someone sneaking around—not a walker.
We get off of the lookout pedestal and go to tell the others.
As Louis, AJ and I all approach the others, he tells me something, "If I don't see you when this is all over, just know, I have no idea what the D on Clem's hat stands for."
I chuckle as he continues, "Don't tell me because I want it to remain a mystery. But I'm gonna pretend that it stands for don't die. So, listen to Clem's hat."
"Okay, goof." I reply, kissing his cheek.
"We're ready." Omar announces.
"Alright, they've got guns and carts, probably to carry people away." I tell them.
"God, I can't believe they're really here." Ruby says, tensing.
Clementine buts in, "If they get inside, (Y/N) and I will keep them focused on us. That should give Willy and Mitch just enough time to setup the bomb."
"I'll set it under those carts." Mitch says, "It'll work, I promise."
"If they manage to get in, we fall back—"
"To the admin building." Louis finishes.
"Exactly," I cut in, "Right into our traps."
"They're in for a rude awakening." Aasim hisses, "Those dufflebags will break bones, easy."
Finally, Louis asks, "Any final words of wisdom?"
"No matter what look out for each other—"
And then Omar gets shot in the leg. We all panic and attempt to hide. I grab my machete and the extra bow while Clem grabs Marlon's. We hide and then pop out once all of them are inside our walls. Everyone else stays hidden.
"Lilly!" I yell, "Move and I'll shoot."
"Where's my new recruits?"
"They're not yours!" Clementine hisses.
Lilly rolls her eyes and orders her people to search the yard. Abel starts heading towards Mitch and Willy so we have to distract her.
"If either of them move, shoot both of them." Lilly says.
"Don't want to kill us yourself, huh?" I hiss, "Just like you didn't want to back in the woods."
"Shut up." The woman responds, as Abel turns his attention back to her, allowing Mitch and Willy to sneak away.
"You can't fucking do it, can you?"
Lilly sighs, "You've both changed."
"We grew up." Clem says.
"I can see that." Lilly huffs, "God, you both are just like him. Lee would've been heartbroken, knowing he taught you two all the wrong things."
"You're right, Lilly. We are just like him. And if he saw us now, he'd be proud of who we've become."
Lilly grits her teeth, "Why? Because you pick fights you can't win? Right, I'm sure that made all of his sacrifices worth it."
"Get out."
"If neither of you want to show us the new recruits, we'll find someone else. We've recruited from the school before. Minnie wanted to come, dearly, she did. She wanted to tell everyone how happy she is. She wanted to see her girlfriend and the guy who couldn't fail to make her laugh. And her little brother, she missed him the most."
Stupidly, Tenn stands up and approaches her, "Where are they?"
"I can take you to them." Lilly responds.
"I can't— I just want them back. Please."
"You'll be happier where they are." Lilly says, slowly approaching Tenn, "They miss you."

Before I can make the call to shoot Lilly, she grabs ten and puts a knife to his throat. That's when Willy and Mitch light a gas trail that leads to their bomb in the cart. They flee back to us as everything erupts into chaos.
The horses flee as people come towards us in front of the school. Mitch charges Lilly as she attempts to grab Tenn again and gets stabbed in the jugular. Lilly curses as she gives the order for kill and kidnap.
"Kill who you have to—take the rest!"
And then it's war.
I shoot one of the gunmen in the leg while Clem gets the other and we order everyone into the admin building for plan B. We hide as Abel and the other two gunmen burst through the door. Just as one walks under the trap we've laid, I cut the rope and the dufflebrick bag falls on him.
We rush up the stairs as another gunman follows us. I push the coach down to them, as Abel comes up and throws a mazel tov. It splits the group. AJ, Clem, and I attempt to take refuge in the headmaster's room but Abel kicks the door in.
"Your friend Lilly ain't here this time. So we'll have a nice friendly chat, you and me."
Clem attempts to attack him but gets knocked out. I fight with him until the balcony breaks out from beneath us and we both fall. I wake up a few seconds later. I'm on top of Abel and he's screaming because his leg is broken. I have a gun aimed at my head by Lilly. AJ and Clem are screaming at me from the office upstairs.
"Shit." Lilly curses, "This should be easy."
"Then do it already." I hiss.
"You're betting I won't."
"I don't care, just get it over with!"
Before she can, Violet charges over and throws her to the ground. Abel attempts to grab me as I go for the gun Lilly had. Instead, Rosie charges over and bites him. I escape, but watch as Louis is dragged away by one of the soldiers. Lilly charges away, exiting the school grounds. I watch aimlessly as both Violet and Louis are fighting different people. With Louis now being such a big part of my life... obviously I have to pick him to save.
Lilly flees with her crew and our friends. She gives Clem and I one final glare before running away. The rest of us kill the walkers that wandered in. But when all was said and done, Aasim, Omar and Violet were taken. And Mitch was dead.
We were broken.
"We're going after them." I mutter.
"If we knew where to look, I'd smash down their walls myself. But we don't." Louis says.
Then I remember that Abel is on the ground with a broken leg, "But we've got someone who does."
After we move Abel to the basement and got a days rest, Clem, AJ and I are down there, ready to torture him. AJ was spinning his gun barrel as Clem and I thought of ways to wake him up. I slap him across the face to wake him up.
"Huh, what the fuck?" He muttered.
"That's no way to wake an old man."
I shut him up. "Where did Lilly take our people?"
Before he can answer, he begins coughing and spitting up blood.
"Got any water?"
AJ allows him to drink a little bit then I get right back to interrogating.
"Don't make this harder than it needs to be," I hiss, "We just wanna know where Lilly took my people."
"Doesn't matter," Abel replies, "As soon as she gets there, she's gonna turn right back around and come back for me. You better give me the five-star treatment."
"Oh shut it." I hiss, slamming his head on the desk.
"Tell us where she took our people or (Y/N)'ll do it again." Clem says.
"Lilly will never give 'em up." Abel says, "The only reason we came here was for more manpower. Losing Yonatan and me for three sprouts that can barely hold a gun? Even a dummy like me can do the math on that one."
"We're getting them back."
"You don't know what it's like out there!"
I chuckle, pulling out my machete from behind me, "Don't know what it's like, huh? The Clem and I fought alongside each other for years every since this shit started. We lost many people that we loved and fought to find and save AJ. We ran from hundreds of people and survived many seasons. You know what's hard? Having to run from people to prevent ourselves from getting kidnapped when we should all be working together to survive this outbreak!" I slam his head on the desk again, "Now tell us where our people are!"
"Fine, front pocket, the answer to all your questions." He says.
It's a bible page, like the ones we saw rolled as cigarettes. I roll my eyes as he asks me to light it and let him smoke. I immediately light it and push it onto his cheek.
"I'm out of patience, Abel. Tell me where Lilly went. Now!"
Before he can answer, he pukes out a lot of blood. He begins ramblining about his life and how he lived his life. I started to get bored and told him that I wouldn't let him turn.
"Okay, we have a boat docked a few miles west of here, at an old fishing pier. Your friends are on the boat."
"Alright, we got what we wanted." I immediately stab him in the head with my machete.
Without another word, the three of us leave the basement and tell the other kids where the boat is and we head out to find it. We look around the area of the boat, searching for the best plan. Eventually with all the information we've gathered, I make a plan.
"So my idea is to light the hay on fire so the horses get scared and flee. They'll head to check it out and we'll use walkers as cover so we can get on the boat. From there we kill who we need to, get our friends and get out."
While we're still discussing the plan, we walk back towards the school. While we do, we see someone chopping firewood. Slowly, I sneak up behind her and put a knife to her throat.
"Where do you put the people you steal?" I hiss, touching the tip to her throat.
"I don't know what you're—"
I push the knife deeper so it pinches her skin, "Answer the question."
"The boiler deck, the second deck. All of them are there."
"(Y/N), wait—"
It's Minerva—Minnie.
We talk for a moment about the attack on our school until Minerva turns to me.
"You're the girl who took over after Marlon died. I thought everyone would want to lead on their own."
"Do you have a problem with that?"
"Of course I do." She hisses back at me, "Your 'leadership' is going to get my brother killed."
"Excuse me, bitch?"
She sighs, "Abel thought he could talk Marlon into handing everyone over, like he and Lilly did..like they did before. You ruined the whole plan."
"What are you talking about?" Louis questions, "Marlon traded you and Sophie like it was nothing."
"And we all survived it." Minnie replies, "Marlon would've never made them fight the way you did. He wouldn't have gotten people killed."
"He wouldn't have gotten people killed?" I repeat, "He murdered Brody."
"What?"
Changing the subject, Louis asks about Sophie and we learn that she died protecting the Delta. A hero. Before I can reply to that, Lilly calls out for Minnie. We tense up, wondering if she'll call us out but she doesn't.
She approaches me, "Our boat leaves for the Delta in two days. Then it'll be a few weeks before we can come back for the rest of you. When we do, don't fight. The only way you're going to save your people is to let us take them. I'm serious."
"I don't care what you think is best. Fighting and dying alongside my friends is better than fighting and dying in some war up north."
Without another word, she runs off. Louis and the others are confused and disappointed that she turned out like this. Everyone else heads back while Clementine, AJ, and I head out to find James and ask him for help. Soon after starting out journey, AJ's wound started acting up so we took a break on a nearby rock. When we reach James' camp, it's completely covered with walkers. He lost his mask after being attacked by the raiders so we have to help him find it. It's the only way to save our friends. Clem and I manage to distract the walkers long enough so James can find it. When we're done, James is hesitant about helping us.
He leads us to a run-down barn filled with walkers. He sends me in there as he says that walkers still have some humanity in them. I push past all the walkers in there and go to the windchimes in the back. When they ring, all the walkers in there approach it. It's peaceful as they stare at the chime. Once I'm out, I don't know how to feel about walkers. It convinces him to bring the walkers for us to use as shields for the raid the next day.
When we get back to base, Ruby is planning a party to raise our spirits before the big fight. While we're getting everything ready, AJ, Clem, and I are in our room.
"There are three kinds of eyes. Alive people eyes, monster eyes, and then there's the eyes of people right as you kill 'em. Like you did to Abel. It looked like you blew a candle out. It just felt.. weird. I shouldn't feel like this. I hated him too.."
"That's because you're a good person, AJ." Clem says.
I bend down to look the boy in the eyes, "You have a big heart. It is perfectly okay to feel this way. We only kill those we have to."
"I'm gettin' smarter."
Clem chuckles, "Is that right?"
"Yeah, cause I'm thinking all the time."
"Okay, then what are you thinking about right now?"
"One of you getting bit. It happens more the older I get. I don't know why."
"Oh." We both mutter, glancing at each other.
"What happens if it does?"
"The remaining few kill the bit one." I reply bluntly, "Neither of us want to suffer as a walker."
"But what if James is right about walkers? I don't want to kill either of you if you could live as a walker instead!"AJ yelps.
"If you didn't, someone else would anyways. Plus, I think I'd rather be dead than a walking corpse."
"If either of you got bit, I'd want you to bite me too." He says.
"No. Alvin Junior, you will keep your promise and shoot whoever gets bit. No one can suffer."
After a few more moments of talking, AJ and Clementine leave to go patrolling. They opens the door to greet Louis. They two leave and I'm left alone with my boyfriend.
"I was uh- wondering." He sighs, "I can't help but thinking. You shot the raider who grabbed me but you saw Violet too. Which means, you could've saved Violet and not me. Why me?"
"I couldn't let them take you.." I reply, "You're too important to me."
"I know I tease her a lot, trying to get her to do the famous eyeroll. You know the one where you're such a dumbass that she needs to do a full-body eye roll. I do it because when I actually make her laugh, it's worth it. If I needed her, she'd be there. Meat cleaver in hand, ready to chop someone in half if it meant protecting me."
"We're getting all of them back."
"Damn right we will." He smiles, "Actually, that's the whole reason I dropped by. Ruby's whole party idea kinda made me realize something."
He sits down with a candle and lights it, "Well I figured, since we might die tomorrow and never get to go out on a real date, why not have one now?"
I immediately sit down beside him and we chat for a bit. He said it was going to be short and sweet so it was. After discussing some things about dating, we toasted to bringing our friends home and AJ and Clem come bursting through the door.
"Hey (Y/N), heads up!"
I turn and catch a beach ball immediately, which then I bounce off of Clementine and AJ's heads as Louis leaves the room. After a few moments of popping the ball around, the three of us do a group hug and then head for the music room.
I walk around the room and do the finishing touches around the party. I choose (F/C) for the mood lighting and the (music genre) records. Finally, I choose AJ to do the banner and we're all ready to party. But before that, I head over to Willy who's in Marlon's old office.
"What's up, Willy?"
"I found a bunch of books on ships. The key, is the boiler. I have an idea about the assholes coming back to the school after rescuing everyone. We're gonna blow up the boat."
"Mitch would love this! Yes."
"The tricky bit is timing it after we get off the boat. It'll work."
The music starts playing so I attempt to leave the room but Will says my name before I can get far.
"I'm sorry for how I treated Tenn." He says, "I know it's not his fault."
"That's nice of you Willy but don't tell me, tell Tenn."
As everyone is mingling, I visit Tenn and Willy as everyone else is partying. Willy wants to name the bomb that's going to stop the raiders.
"Mitch's Masterpiece, definitely."
"I agree."
I wonder what Mitch would've called it.
"Yes! I found them! Everyone, come're. These are our official psych evaluations. THese explain why all of us got sent here in the first place."
"So what's the game?"
"I figured since we're all going on this mission together, you might as well know who we really are. So I'm going to read out a report and you have to guess who it is."
Ruby reads out one report about a student who is very aggressive, swearing and hitting the faculty members. Clem, AJ, and I discuss for a moment, trying to figure out who it is.
"That's you. I can see it. The first time I came here you were all 'that little motherfucker." I say, using a slight southern accent.
"Wanna know why I got sent here?" Willy asks.
"Nope, no one wants to know that." Louis says.
"Chronic masterbation." He says.
I stare at him, wondering why he seemed so proud of that statement.
"Willy, I speak for all of us when I say that no one has ever..EVER wanted to know that."
We sit in silence as Ruby looks through the files and counts how many students and faculty they lost. Louis tells us his own story about how he broke up his parents' marriage because his dad wouldn't let him get singing lessons. Soon, to make it feel like everyone was here again, Louis starts playing "Don't Be Afraid," a song that he composed with Minnie and Violet. Once he's done, AJ blows out the candle and the party's over. All of us go to bed a few hours early and wake up later that night to take the long walk to the boat. All of the walkers have just gotten there with James' help.
Before the fight begins, James and I have a small conversation. He talks to me about how his boyfriend and him became killers because of the Whisperers group. How he became the cause of it and how he killed someone for being weak. He realized his mistakes.
"When AJ told me he killed someone, it reminded me of myself. He said it was wrong but it sounded like he was just repeating what he had been told." James says, "Taking life like that, from a young age, it breaks something inside you. I just—I'm afraid that if AJ kills again, he won't be able to go back. Just consider it, that's all I ask."
Soon enough, the walker's are close enough to use as cover. Before we leave, I walk up to Louis.
"It's really happening, isn't it?"
"Yeah, it is."
Louis sighs, "Other people's lives are depending on me. You're depending on me—what if something happens to you? What if I can't?"
"I believe in you." I say simply, "I wouldn't have asked you to come otherwise."
"But what if I get us caught too?" Louis continues, "All it takes is one little screw up and I screw up all the time."
He begins pacing back and forth, "Come on Louis, get a hold of yourself." Then he turns to me, "You gotta slap me, help pull me out of this."
Instead, I kiss him. He blinks rapidly before laughing and AJ catches us.
AJ finds a walker and cuts him open so we can cover ourselves in their guts to hide from the other walkers. We walk through the herd, using walkers as cover to avoid getting shot. Once we're on the pier, the horses are cut loose and startled by the fire while Willy steals the supplies. Louis, AJ, Clementine and I crawl along the side of the dock. Our path is blocked by a soldier so we swim under the dock and get onto a nearby ladder. I'm the last person to go up and a walker gets a chance to grab my leg. I'm pulled under for half a second before I kick them off of me.
We hide from the searchlight and eventually make it to the entrance. Walkers come towards us as Louis, Clem and Aj open the door so I defend the group from them. We hide once inside the boat and search for the boiler. They follow me as I search for the boiler so we can place the bomb. In the next room, a person comes in and notices us. So I knock him out before he can alert the others. This room is the boiler but there's too much stuff in the way so we search for another entrance around the boat. We find the entrance but there's a guy blocking our path so I knock him out too.
I don't kill these people because I know they probably were forced to become soldiers like Minnie. We head up the leader nearby and search around for where they put the prisoners. Minnie is guarding the entrance. Clem raises her bow and tells her that Tenn forgives her and is outside, waiting for us. She curses but lowers her bow and unlocks one of the cells. Louis and AJ attempt to follow me and Clementine in but Minnie hits us behind the head and forces the two boys into another cell. It was a trap.
I should've known.
Violet is silent as we're trying to tell her that we're here for her.
"All either of you've done has got us hurt or killed. If you two fuck this up worse, I'll stop both of you myself."
I sigh, "Fine, stay here and be like Minnie. Murder people who might just be slightly different than you."
Clem and I search the place and find out that AJ still has his shiv. He slides it over and we start chipping at the rusted door but one of the guards hears us. We hide the shiv just in time for Lilly to approach. She opens the door to my cell and comes in with me.
"Usually I'd shoot you and toss you overboard for the trouble you've caused but I'm genuinely impressed. First you organize these idiot kids into a fighting force and kill two of my most experienced soldiers. Then you sneak onto my boat under the cover of a herd. I bring a prize like you two back to the Delta, it might make this whole clusterfuck of a mission worth it."
"We'll never fight for you."
"You'll come around."
"My father Larry, he was a military man. He had all kinds of rules. The thing that bugged him most was waste. If I ever left a light on after leaving a room, he'd flip. No matter how much he ranted about the cost of electricity, I could never remember to hit that switch."
"So?"
"So one day, he let our power get cut. He liked illustrations to show that actions have consequences." She continues.
"Asshole runs in the family."
"The consequence is that I never left the lights on again. My father might have had his faults but he showed me the effectiveness of teaching by example."
"Is that what this is?" I question, "A lesson?"
She ushers me over and continues talking, "I want to tell you a story. Let's call it the parable of the twins. Two girls were taken from their home and taken to a new place to live. They had to leave their friends and family behind and that was hard at first. They shed a lot of tears but the new place was a good place. The people there grew corn and raised pigs and the twins ate well for the first time in years. They were given new clothes, beds, they were given guns and trained to use them. The people were kind to these girls. All that was asked in return was that they defend the group. This place had a lot of enemies who wanted what the group had. They needed help fighting or they'd lose everything they built. One of the girls saw that this was a place worth fighting for but the other twin... she could never forget her old home. She rejected every gift, every opportunity, stirred up trouble every chance she got. She convinced her sister to help her steal a raft. Of course, they didn't get far."
She smirks, "What happened next Minerva?"
Minnies face turns dark and stoic, "I killed her."
"Holy shit! Is that true?!" Aasima yells.
"Why would you do that?" Lilly asks.
"I made a mistake I needed to show my loyalty to the place I call home."
Lilly smiles at me, "Like it or not you're one of my people now. The question is, are you going to be the loyal twin or the dead one?"
Louis starts yelling and freaking out about this situation, I attempt to calm him down but to no avail.
"Pull the mouthy one out of the cell."
One of the other soldiers grabs Louis and attempts to take one or more of their fingers off. AJ immediately jumps on the soldier and bites off a piece of her ear. Lilly takes him away to "chat" while Clem and I start digging at the door. Violet tries to stop us but Minnie notices and opens the door. We both bust through and knock her out while Louis accidentally kills one of the soldiers. Clem and I rush to find and save AJ while the others get back on land.
We find out that the raiders caught James and Tenn as well. Tenn grabs one of the guns of the raiders and aims it at Lilly but can't bring himself to shoot. She steals it back from him and tries to shoot him but is bitten by AJ. Quickly, Clem and I charge in and take down Lilly while James takes out the other soldier. Lilly isn't a threat but I know she would do something bad so I attempt to kill her. She kicks my shin and I go to one knee. Clem attempts to help but the bomb goes off and throws us all backwards. Lilly lands on top of James and immediately shoots him through his head. AJ screams as the boat blows up again and everyone is knocked away from us.
Clem and I wake up beside each other. Everything around us is broken and on fire. We help each other get up and look around but the next explosion blows off Clem's hat. Both of us are heartbroken by it but our ears perk up at the sound of AJ's voice. He's hanging from some scrap of the boat. We immediately rush over and jump onto a boat nearby. The only way to get to AJ is for him to come to us. So he jumps onto the boat but the three of us are pushing how much weight the old ropes can hold. Quickly Clem and AJ jump. But as I'm about to, the boat explodes again and the boat's rope snaps. I hold on for dear life as the others try to get down to the pier. I manage to jump down as well and we get off of the roof.
We fight a soldier and run to the edge of the pier, where we find Lilly. I curse at her and fire an arrow that goes straight through her chest. She gasps for a few seconds before her eyes roll back into her head and she falls into the water. The three of us rush away from the boat as it topples over and destroys the remains of the pier.
We get to the beach and find Violet, Louis and the others. Violet.. is blind. She's blind because I decided to save Louis and not her.
"I—I'm so sorry Violet." I cry, "I didn't know this would happen. I'm so sorry."
"Less chit-chat, more RUNNING!" Louis yells as the walkers begin to close in.
We run together as I hold onto Violet's hand to keep her alongside us. We reach Omar and the others and discover where Ruby and Willy are. They have a horse and cart ready to go. We watch as soldiers are eaten by walkers and Minnie gets bit but continues to fight. Everyone runs for the cart (except for AJ) while Clem and I stay behind to cover them.
They get there safely but I watch as Minnie gets a chunk ripped out of her cheek and notices us. She screams our names and pulls the pin out of a grenade. I attempt to shoot it with my arrow but I miss and get her in the chest instead. The grenade falls right beside us so we duck to dodge the blast. However, the blast scares the horse so we watch in terror as our friends are taken away, into the woods. We rush through the remaining members of the herd and meet up with Tenn. We flee the scene and attempt to hide from the herd in a cave. It's too dark to see much so Clem and I quickly search for something to make a torch with.
After escaping the herd, AJ begins talking to us about how he feels regarding killing and the world of walkers. He wants to be able to decide for himself who the bad and good people are. We allow him to. Eventually, he has to and as long as he listens to us, everything should be okay. Soon enough we find the exit of the cave and start heading down the pathway towards the school. Everything is calm, silent. Eventually, we find Louis in the woods and we greet each other before heading back towards the school. While we walk in silence, all I can think about is the fact that I am the reason that Violet is blind now. It plagues my mind.
"I killed that woman, back on the boat." Louis randomly said.
"Was that your first?" I ask.
"Yeah, it was."
"Well, just try not to think about it right now, okay? We can talk about it later."
Louis soon starts talking about the house that his parents were going to build before the walkers came. Three floors, a skylight and it's gotta be purple. It would be an amazing house and it would definitely be a project to pass the time. Eventually, we reach the bridge. It seems a wreck but we still attempt to cross. There's a truck in the middle of it that we jump over. Before we can hop over the gap on the other side, we hear singing.
"Nevermind the darkness, nevermind the storm. Nevermind the blood-red moon. The night will be over soon." Minnie sings.
Behind her is many different walkers.
"I did it, I found you." Minnie says, "Oh Tenn, my sweet little brother. Come with me."
"You're dying." He replies.
"Yes, I am!" She says, "And I want you there with me."
"Where everyone gets to be a person again?"
"We're going to go be with mom and dad..and Sophie." She whispers.
"She's going to kill you, Tenn, don't." I hiss, grabbing him.
She shoots her pistol in the air, "Don't you fucking speak to him, any of you! Don't worry Tenn, she can try to stop me but I am not going anywhere without you."
I get up as Tenn approaches her but I can't grab him before she shoots at me and whispers, "The night will be over soon."
The walkers begin approaching us because of the bullets so Clem and I shoot and attack them while dodging Minnie's bullets. Louis attempts to get AJ and Tenn across the gap. We get a few of them down but Louis can't get Tenn to budge. When I look back up, Minnie comes crashing down with an axe that I nearly don't dodge. I kick her shin while Clem and Louis both try to get Tenn across the gap. I grab the gun from her and throw it across to AJ but she rams into me and slices my leg with the axe anyways. I fall to the ground while Clem and Louis push Minnie into the walkers but Tenn still won't budge. He tries to save his sister while Clem jumps the gap and Louis tries to get him away from her. I follow her by using the axe as leverage. AJ picks up the gun and shoots Tenn since Louis wouldn't be able to turn back because he was going to get Louis killed.
Although Louis is angry, he eventually understands that there was no other choice unless we wanted to lose two people. We leave the bridge and attempt to climb over a fence but there are too many. Louis is on the other side of the fence so he can't help us anymore. AJ leads the two of us up the side of a cliff as the walkers follow. I climb last because of my injured leg but one of them grabs my leg and bites into it. Once I get out of its grip and lay on the rock. I peel open my boot to look at my leg.
"I got bit."
Clementine and AJ look at me with disbelief. But eventually, I get up and Clem helps me limp into the forest. We find James' barn and take refuge inside. Clem and AJ lead the way while I hit the walkers that fall behind. Once we get inside, I lean myself against the door with AJ as Clementine rushes around and shuts the other doors to prevent the walkers from getting in. AJ sticks the pitchfork through the door handles to prevent it from opening. AJ goes and shuts the windows and I try too as well but I'm too weak. I'm dying. Finally, all the doors and windows are shut and we can rest for a moment.
"Now what?" Clem says.
"You need to find a way out of here." I say.
"Easy climb, let's go!"AJ yelps, "Please... try."
I can't get up.
"I can't move AJ." I say, "I'm sorry.."
"I need you!" AJ yells.
"You don't need me." I say, "You got Clem and the others back at the school. You'll be okay."
I make sure they know the rules and then the two of them sadly cut open the walker laying there and cover themselves in their guts. I hold back my own tears as we all realize that there aren't any more bullets left. Only the axe. And the only way to kill me... to stop me from turning would be the axe.
"I don't want to leave.."
"Live for me." I say, reaching out to him and Clem, "Get a girlfriend, kill the walkers, survive this age. Take care of Clementine, live."
He starts crying alongside Clem, "I don't want to kill you!"
"You have to, AJ." I tell him, "I don't want to become one of those monsters."
"Do you want me to do it, then?" Clem asks, wiping her own tears away.
"I—"
I shut my eyes and let whatever happens, happen.

"The fish are feisty today, aren't they?" Clem says.
"Yeah they are, I can't catch a single one." I reply.
"Maybe it's time to pack up for the day. We can't seem to catch any."
"Good idea."
The two of us pet Rosie and then head into the shed to put our spears away. When we come back outside, the two of us notice a familiar hat with a 'D' on it. Immediately we try to catch it but we miss it. Luckily Rosie manages to catch it. Before we can talk much about it, we turn to see a walker. Upon closer inspection, we realize that the walker is Tenn.
"Guess (Y/N) and James were right about walkers. That's Tenn and his mannerisms!" Clementine yells, and I too realize that there must be some part of Tenn still in there.
He's doing the thing with his hands. He'd play with them when he's nervous or thinking about something and that's exactly what his walker is doing. Clem decides to throw a rock instead of killing him. Just then, Ruby appears to tell us that supper is soon. She heads to check on Aasim while the rest of us head back to the school. Everything's improved since the fight with the raiders. Everything just seems brighter. Although we lost so many people fighting, we gained so much from it. New supplies, experiences, food, defences and more. I don't regret it at all. I greet everyone with a nod as I approach Omid with the fish we got. Clementine heads over to see Violet.
"Whatcha doing there goofball?"
I immediately whirl around and hug (Y/N).
"You're out of bed—you're walking! And you have wood-arm legs!"
"Crutches." She corrects, chuckling and rolling her eyes, "Come with me. I have something to show you."
She hops over to a tall tree with a tire tied to it. She pushes me and I feel like I'm flying until supper's ready. I want to do that every day of my life. Before we head off to eat, I hug her tightly.
"You're the best, (Y/N)."
We all sit down to eat and Willy starts a food fight which causes everyone to laugh. Ruby accidentally burps while eating to I join her. Everyone laughs as well as Clem complains at my manners. I watch as Clem and Violet flirt and chat together while Louis passes a note to (Y/N). She giggles and playfully punches him then kisses him on the cheek. Soon the two get up and go talk about future plans. I follow them.
"That's where Aasim saw him." Louis says, pointing at the school's map.
"I want you to go."
"You're the boss."
"We need to know who they are. Maybe even see if they're willing to trade. Just keep your distance until you can make a call."
"Who, who are?" I question.
"A group of survivors, out behind the old safe zone in some kind of caravan." (Y/N) responds.
"Are they bad people?"
"You wanna come with me in the morning to find out?" Louis asks.
I'm confused.
"Aren't you still mad at me about Tenn?" I ask.
"I—AJ I guess it's like—You saw something I didn't. About the situation, I mean." Louis replies, "It's just confusion when I look back on it. Clem says you saved my life. Well, then that's exactly what I did. How could I stay mad at anyone for doing that?"
He shakes my hand and then he leaves to go mingle with the others. (Y/N) tenses and tells me to walk with her. She hops up on the stairs and sits down. I sit down beside her. She catches me staring at her stump.
"If I was like this and we were out there..god, I would never make it."
"It's okay, I'll make you a new foot."
We watch as everyone has fun.
"All this.. It's worth it." She says, "Everytime you asked when we'd find a new home and I would say I didn't know. Your face would fall everytime."
"It's better than lying to me."
"Well you want to know something I didn't tell you?" She asks, "I never had a plan, I never knew where we were going. I never knew anything. I just fought and fought, and hoped you didn't notice. The same with Clementine. Hoped we'd find something before you did... did I do a good job?"
"Of course you did!" I yell, catching the attention of some of the other kids.
"When we were in the barn, you and Clem didn't listen to me. And if you did... well I'm glad that you didn't. I was right to trust you, back in the cave." She continues, "To make the hard calls, even when I couldn't. You'll have to be strong for both of us now, you and Clem."
"You made it so I can. So, thank you for everything." I reply.
She smiles as she looks at the other kids and sighs in relief. We finally had a home. Later that day, I head to our room and place her hat on the dresser in between our beds. Everything is perfect. We have a home, we're safe, we have food and friends.
I would never want anything else.
