Chapter Three

The first kids that we talk to are Louis and another boy with an afro. There's a pot of something in between them, and the boy is stirring it.

"Hey guys." Clem and I greet.

"Clem, AJ, (Y/N)! This is Omar, uh, excuse me..Chef Omar." Louis responds.

"Hello." Omar says, " And no, it's not ready yet."

"Omar's a perfectionist. The slightest flavor out of place and he's grumpy for a week." Louis explains.

"You can eat, or you can eat right. All it'll cost you is a little patience." Omar replies, continuing to stir.

"I'll let you guys know when we're done." Louis says, so we head to the next person.

We head over to Willy and Mitch. Mitch seems to be carving a weapon.

"Hey." I greet.

He looks up, "Hey. You're new." He looks back down and continues to carve a weapon, "I'm carving a weapon."

Thank you, Captain Obvious.

"You're good at that." AJ points out.

"You like that, huh, little dude?" Mitch responds, "Wanna see something cool?"

"I wanna see!"

Mitch does a few flips with the knife, "Pretty rad, huh? That's how you fuck up some monsters."

"Swear." AJ mutters, glancing up at Clem and I.

"Uh..I'm sorry?" Mitch says, causing Willy to laugh.

The three of us walk off. Clem and I approach Ruby, but AJ pulls on my arm.

"It's that girl I bit."

"Yeah, wanna go talk to her?" Clem replies.

"You mean, say I'm sorry?" He asks.

"Yes." We both say in unison.

"She's scary. And always seems so mad." AJ responds, backing away.

"You can do it." I say.

"You just gotta..start with a joke. Once she's laughing, apologize." Clem finishes.

AJ approaches the girl, "Yes?" She asks, with a surprisingly angry tone.

"Knock knock." AJ says, "Who's there? Atch. Atch who? Bless you!"

Internally, I'm cringing.

"I'm sorry I bit you." He quickly says, noticing Ruby's annoyed look.

"You're forgiven, you little weirdo." Ruby chuckles.

The three of us walk off again, and approach Aasim.

"Hello?" AJ asks, but the boy doesn't respond. He tries again and waves his hand in front of Aasim's face.

"Oh hey, AJ. Clementine and (Y/N), right?" He asks, we both nod.

"What are you writing?" Aj questions.

"What happened today." Aasim responds, "I chronicle everything."

"Like a diary?" I ask, crossing my arms.

"I try to think of it more like a history book. 'Those who do not learn from the past' and all that." He replies.

"You seemed really mad at Marlon back there." Clem points out,

"He keeps pulling back the safe zone. We have fewer and fewer places to hunt. Which means we're going to have fewer and fewer things to eat." Aasim says.

"The new girls went and helped the hun..hunting party come back. She-" AJ is cut off from reading Aasim's writing when he tries to reach over and grab it.

"Hey. Zip it!" He says, "That is not yours to read, kid. Give it back."

"AJ, give it back to him." I sigh. Thankfully, the kid listens.

"Thank you." Aasim says, "This thing is the only place I get any real privacy around here. You gotta preserve, what you can, y'know? I gotta finish this before dinner. Not to be like, rude, but can you..y'know..bye?"

So I chuckle at the three and we find Violet and Tenn around the corner.

"Hey guys." We greet.

Tenn backs away upon seeing Clem, but Violet tells him to knock it off.

"Knock it off Tenn," Violet mutters, turning to us, "Heard you guys didn't have the best introduction."

"We apologize." I say before Clem can start a fight, "We were in a place we didn't know, and with our past, we thought we were going to be hurt again."

"It's okay." Tenn responds with a smile.

"What's this?" AJ questions, glancing at the crosses and flowers behind Tenn and Violet.

"Our graveyard." the blond-haired girl responds.

"I haven't seen one in a while." I mutter, "So who's buried here?"

"Nobody, really." Violet responds, "We buried the belongings of Tenn's sisters, Minnie and Sophie, twins. Lost 'em, both about a year ago." She glances down at AJ, "Paying respects."

He looks up at Clem and I, "Should we do that too?"

Clem glances at me, surprisingly, but I sigh, "It's not our place, AJ. Let's give them some space."

"Okay." He responds, then he smiles, "I'm glad you two aren't in a graveyard."

I smile at Clementine, "Me too buddy, me too."

Before we really leave Violet and Tenn behind, AJ stops.

"I'm ready..to talk to Marlon." He says, so we approach Marlon and another girl with red hair, but she's not Ruby.

"(Y/N) and Clementine, right?" She asks, "I'm Brody."

We discuss AJ for a few moments, before the little guy apologizes to Marlon and the stew that Louis and Omar were cooking is finally finished. So we all sit down with a bowl.

Clementine, AJ, and I sit down at a table with Marlon, Ruby, and Louis. As everyone begins eating, Ruby is clearly annoyed at AJ for the way he's eating his fill. I can see why, since AJ has the entire bowl covering his face.

"AJ bud, slow it down." I mutter, "You're gonna end up choking."

He slows down, as Ruby gets up, going on about how everything died, except for manners. When she's gone, AJ turns to me, complaining about the small amount of food that we got today.

"I'm sure they shared as much as they could." Clem quickly buts in.

He sighs, but Louis slides over his own bowl.

"I'm full." He says, "Have mine instead."

"Thank you, Louis." I reply, grinning.

When we are all done eating, Louis pulls out a deck of cards and Violet comes over to join us.

"What's the game tonight, Lou?" Marlon asks.

"War." He responds, "The oldest game around. A game played by man and beast alike. The only game there is."

"Never heard of it." Clem and I state.

"It's easy." Violet says, "Everyone gets a stack of cards, and they flip one over. Highest card wins."

"And the winner gets to ask you two a question." Louis buts in.

"And if we win we get to ask you guys one?" I question.

"Yep, it's only fair."

"Wait, what about AJ?" Clem questions, glancing behind and beside us for the boy.

I giggle, "He's fine, Clem. Look, he and Tenn are getting along. We can spend a few minutes with these guys. We don't always need to watch him. He is getting older."

She nods slowly, "You're right."

The game starts, and everyone flips over a card. Violet gets the highest.

"So...about AJ." She begins, "Where are his parents? You three don't look related so..I assume.."

"They're dead." I reply softly, "They were nice people, but too nice for this fucked up world, I guess."

Quickly shifting past my commentary, everyone flips a card again. This time Clem wins.

"Alright, what do ya wanna know?" Louis asks.

She pauses, thinking. "Marlon, what's up with your haircut?"

I cover my mouth to hold in the laughter, while Louis looks terrified and Violet chuckles.

"What do you mean?" Marlon responds.

"She means it looks like a dead cat. Probably smiles like one, too." Violet says, smiling.

"Uh, I look cool." Marlon replies.

"Whatever you say." Violet responds.

"I say I look cool."

After a moment of giggling and laughing, we flip our cards over again. Louis wins, this time.

"So, have either of you ever had a boyfriend or girlfriend?" He asks.

"Nope, never." Clem quickly responds.

"What about Gabe, Clemmy?" I tease, nudging her.

A bright red blush appears on her face and she looks away, "T-That was not.. it wasn't a-anything."

"Whatever you say." I chuckle, "I never had one either."

"Really? Wow."

We flip again and Marlon wins this time, "So, you three couldn't have been alone this entire time, who used to take care of you?"

"His name was Lee." We respond.

"What'd he teach you?"

"Lot's of stuff." Clem replies.

"Most important thing?"

"How to shoot a gun, and..how to let go." I reply.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to strike a nerve." Marlon quickly states.

"It's okay."

On the next turn, I win.

"Okay (Y/N), your turn to ask."

"Hmm, you have the ability to create anything out of nothing, but only once a day. What do you create first?" I ask.

"Geez, this is a very different question." Louis mutters, "I'd make a giant reinforced wall to keep the walkers out."

"I'd create a mini-gun to blast the walkers away." Marlon states.

"I'd make a farm, we need more food." Violet says.

We flip over the cards again, and Violet wins with the highest card.

"Here's something I like to ask when I'm in groups." She says, "Out of the four of us, which one do you two think will die first?"
