Chapter Six

"What the hell did you teach this kid!?" Louis yells at us.

Clem and I stand in shock at AJ's actions, staring at the blood sprayed on our faces and hands.

I grind my teeth, "AJ, what the hell? Y-You killed him!"

"B-But, I aimed for the head."

I sigh, "AJ, that's for walkers, the monsters...not people. Marlon was no longer a threat..dammit, we were going to help him!"

He flinches at my angry voice, immediately dropping the gun. Clementine holds my arm to prevent me from getting too angry. I drop to the ground, inspecting the bullet and concluding that Marlon was killed immediately.

"All of you, take a step back," Violet yells, standing in front of AJ and waving her cleaver around, "Now!"

Clementine stands beside her, but I stand with Louis and the others. Even if I didn't know Marlon or any of the other teens personally, tears well up in my eyes and slowly start to seep out.

"Go inside, now." The blond says.

AJ and Clementine do as she says. AJ attempts to walk over to me, but I stand up and get behind Louis instead. He calls out to me as Clem pulls him away and enters the school.

"(Y/N)?" Louis asks, "Why aren't you going with them?"

I bite my lip nervously, "I'm just...I don't know. I guess I'm angry at AJ for the choice he just made."

The boy nods but I can sense his unease around me, "Take your time..we know that it's not your fault."

I shake my head, "But, what if it is? What if he only shot M-Marlon because of me?"

Louis sighs, "It's not. Maybe...he just doesn't know any better."

I swallow, deciding to keep quiet for now.

Although the group doesn't think that I am very far apart on the 'hate-scale' from Clementine and AJ, I'm allowed to sleep in an empty room for the night. The next day is Marlon and Brody's funeral.

"Are you sure they should come?" I mutter to Violet.

She nods, "I don't think they're very guilty of anything. AJ's just a kid who doesn't understand anything about this world yet. He wasn't born with laws or rules."

I slowly nod my head, "I understand. I just don't think they will." I nod over to the rest of the group. They're all deep in thought and suddenly snap out of it as AJ and Clem approach.

A fight immediately breaks out, and for once...I don't feel like getting in the middle of it. Violet does it for me.

"If we all had asked more questions when the twins disappeared last year, none of this would've happened." She hisses, standing in between the two groups.

"(Y/N)?" AJ finally says, "A-Are you with them because y-you think I'm a murderer too?"

I snap out of my trance, turning to the boy. Yet, I can't even look him in the eye.

"Yes," I reply plainly, "I get that you have no idea how things work around here...mostly because Clem and I taught you how to survive...not how to live. I'm sorry for that..but, you are a murderer."

"But who's side are you on?" Mitch asks, approaching us.

I freeze, looking down, "I-I don't know who to trust anymore."

Clementine steps beside me, "You've known me our entire lives, would I do anything to hurt you or them?"

I lock eyes with her, "No."

"Would AJ, though?" Mitch buts in, "Would he kill you to survive?"

I look over at the child, who's clearly close to crying, "Maybe."

He flinches.

"I can't take this anymore!" Mitch yells, "We're voting, you three have to go!"

"Wait, me too?"

"Yes, (Y/N), you too." He replies, "We don't know you either. Maybe all three of you are lying! We..we can't trust anyone anymore."

Violet sighs, turning to the three of us, "Fuck it, I guess we're voting. Go back to your dorm, I'll come to get you once we've decided."

Reluctantly, I follow Clem and AJ as we head into our room and sit down.

We sit there for what seems like hours. I pace in front of the window, back and forth until Clementine yells at me to stop. I glare at her but then I sit down on the floor at the end of her bed. I cover my face with my hands and begin to hyperventilate.

"(Y/N), you haven't acted like this since that one time in preschool." Clem points out.

That's when the memory floods my mind.

I remember when my parents weren't home and I saw a scary man outside my door. I practically ran to Clem's house even though there was my babysitter there. I just felt safer at Clem's.

"You clung to my arm the rest of the day until your babysitter finally came to pick you up."

I smile, "Yeah, I remember."

"We'll be okay," She adds, "We've done this millions of times before."

I nod, "Okay."

Eventually Louis and Violet enter, telling us that we were voted to leave. Louis tries to take AJ's gun too, but I quickly tell him to keep it. We walk with the two behind us until we're past the safe-zone and then we say our goodbyes. Clem, AJ, and I continue on the road for five minutes before a bullet comes barreling towards us and hits a nearby tree.

We duck and hide behind cover. I look at the stranger to discover that it's Abel, the creepy guy from the train station.

I attempt to attack him with my machete, but he grabs my weapon and throws it away. I trip him and almost get to finish him off, but someone points a machine gun to the bakc of my head. I freeze and put my hands up. Clementine and AJ stand nearby as backup. Thankfully, Clem won't allow AJ to try and protect me. She knows its a bad idea.

Abel kicks my gut and I fall to the ground. The person with the gun keeps the barrel pointed at my head and stands on my neck.

"We're looking for a guy named Marlon, know 'em?"

"H-He's dead," I manage to say, "I killed him."

"How about this then.." The woman pointing a gun at me says, "You take us back to your school, help us talk to your friends?"

I chuckle, even under the pressure, "I just got kicked out of there for murdering him, so no, I wouldn't."

She kicks me over the head, I look up to see Lilly. The same Lilly that was kicked off the RV and left to die on the side of the road.

"(Y/N), it's you?" She mutters, putting the gun away and helping me up.
