Chapter One

When the dead started walking...we were small, and alone. Until a man named Lee became our protector. Lee protected other people too, but he couldn't save everyone. You can never save everyone, but he saved Carley. The living are just as dangerous as the dead. A woman in our group named Lilly lost her dad. And then she just couldn't cope. She took the life that Lee saved. Lee left her on the side of the road.

Lee taught us how to survive.

He protected us for as long as he could, but he got bit...because of us. Even in the end, he was still teaching. He told Clementine to keep her hair short, but he told me to protect Clem with my life. I promised him that, and I intend to keep that promise for as long as I am alive and kicking. Lee wouldn't make it. He knew it was the end, but he made one final request. He asked us to shoot him, so I did.

Clem and I met another group after that. Broken people, running from their past. There was a woman who gave birth to a boy named Alvin Junior; AJ. He made it, but the mom didn't. And we started to take care of him. But then Jane left AJ in the snow, we thought he was gone forever. That was the last straw for Kenny. I found where Jane put AJ, but Clementine shot Kenny before I could show him.

Eventually, Clem, AJ, and I traveled to a new frontier. I thought we'd found something that worked. But I was wrong again. They took AJ from us. Said we were too young to take care of him. We fought back, but we weren't strong enough.

We searched for a long time. And just when we nearly gave up hope, we found him. We're searching together now..for a place we can call home. We're all AJ has, and Clem is still my sister. I will do anything and everything I have to..in order to keep the only people I love dearly alive. I will keep my promise to Lee.

No matter the cost.

Today, Clem, AJ, and I are driving on the road. AJ is spinning the barrel on the gun.

"Whatcha doing there, goofball?" I ask, taking my feet off of the dash of the sports car.

"Pretending we got bullets." AJ replies, I roll my eyes.

"Well quit it, you're annoying me."

Clementine glances at us with an annoyed look, "Kids, I will turn this car around."

I chuckle, "I thought I was supposed to be the mom figure here, Clem!"

She replies with a soft chuckle, then AJ leans up from his seat at the back, "I don't like goofball...I'm too big for it."

Clem chuckles once more, "So I guess you're all grown up now."

"Yep!" AJ responds, "Let me drive!"

I laugh, "We are not letting you drive."

Suddenly, the boy places his hand on his stomach. At first, my motherly instincts kick in and I snap my posture up, concerned. When I hear the familiar stomach gurgle, though, I chuckle.

"Looks like someone's hungry."

"Yeah, when are we getting food?" AJ asks.

"Don't worry, soon, goofball." Clem says.

I open the hatch under the dashboard and glance at the three items, a cookbook, snack, and toy. I smile, picking up the toy. I turn so AJ can only see the toy and my arm, but not me.

"Hey there AJ, my name's Disco Broccoli!" I say in a deep voice, moving the toy around as I speak, "Word on the street is that you wanna eat me, do you wanna eat me?"

"C'mon (Y/N)," AJ groans, "you know I can't eat a toy."

"Awh, my feelings are hurt." I reply in the deep voice, throwing the toy off to the side.

I glance back at the compartment, picking up the snack. I glance at Clem, she gives me the 'okay' nod, so I hand the snack back to AJ. The bright smile on his face disappears when he realizes that that bag of chips is about all we got left.

"What about you two?" He asks.

"Nice of you to care and all.." I begin.

"But we'll be fine, AJ." Clementine finishes, "We'll find something else to eat soon."

Eventually, Clementine approaches a train station.

"We going in?" I ask.

"Think so." Clem replies.

She hands AJ the pocket-knife, and I jump out of the passenger seat, grabbing the crowbar, canteen, and my signature machete. We head towards the main building together. When we approach, a walker gets up off of the ground, so I stun it by kicking it's right leg and then I slice it's head clean off.

AJ finds a tire swing, which gives me flashbacks of when Lee pushed Clem and I on the swing back at the farm. Before we almost cannibalized our friend.

"Monster trap?" AJ asks.

"It's not a trap, silly." I reply.

"You swing on it, for fun." Clem finishes.

Noticing AJ's confusion, I chuckle, "You get in the tire and someone pushes you so you go high."

"Hm, I wanna try." he pauses, "After we clear this place."

I smile, and then we find the front door, clearly locked. Clem takes the crowbar from the bag on my back and pries the door open. Before we go inside though, I bend down in front of AJ.

"What do we do inside I new place?" I ask.

"We listen for monsters." AJ replies firmly.

"After that?"

"Uh.." I chuckle at his response.

"We check the windows." Clementine finally says.

I creak the door open, not seeing any signs of a human inside. We step inside and see two walkers tied together on chairs, one a female, the other a male. They were clearly a married couple. We find a security door next to the ticket booth, clearly where their food must be stocked. Clementine inspects, discovering that the walker couple wanted to stay like that and be left alone.

The key to the ticket booth door is on the man though, and I do not want to send AJ through the window of the dark ticket booth.

"I vote that we kill the couple." I tell Clem, "It would be too much of a risk to send AJ alone into the ticket booth."

"I agree." Clem says, "I'll get the key."

So the girl does. She pulls out her knife and stabs the two walkers in the head, grabbing the key from the male walker's pocket. She unlocks the door and the three of us step inside.

"Can we stay here?" AJ asks, excitedly running around.

"We'll see." Clem and I respond in unison.

"No one's here." the little boy responds, "No one's ever anywhere..it's always just monsters."

I sigh, "There's a lot of bad people, AJ."

"Be careful what you wish for." Clem adds.

"There must be good people too..we're good."

Suddenly the boy runs over and notices bullets sitting on the table. I chuckle.

"Remember what we said?" Clem asks, as the boy inserts them into his gun.

"Always aim for the head." AJ replies.

"Come on, let's keep looking." I say, "There's gotta be something we can eat here."

I notice a can on the floor, I bend down and inspect it. Spoiled.

"Sorry bud, these are long gone." I mutter.

"Fuck."

Clem and I both turn at the sound of AJ's swear, glaring.

"Watch the swears." I hiss.

"I-I meant shoot." AJ mutters, but then he points as I throw the can behind me. It rolls towards the bed on the floor, as if being pulled by air.

I push the mattress with Clementine, exposing a floor door. The three of us smile and I open the door. I hear a click, but I assume that it's the door creaking. My worst fears come true though, when a grenade pops into view.

"It's rigged!" I yell, grabbing my brother and sister, throwing our bodies out of the room.

We cough, and I clench my jaw as I hear walkers groaning. We rush to the windows to see lots of them approaching. We kick through the door and start heading towards the car. I pull out my machete. Clem attacks a walker on her left, while I take out the one closest to me on the right. AJ smashes the last one on the ground with a piece of plywood, then I rush over and stab it in the head.

The three of us rush to the car, trying to avoid the other walkers. I slide into the passenger's seat, while AJ gets in the back and Clem gets in the drivers. As she tries to shut the door, a walker's arm gets in the way and Clem uses the key to stab it in the eye. She gets the walker off of the door and shuts it.

She shifts the gear and releases the brake, so we start going forward. We run into the walker with the keys in his eye, then a walker breaks into the back of the car. This prompts AJ to come and sit on my lap. He passes Clem the knife, while I use my short pocketknife to stab another walker as it attempts to grab at AJ and I. One attempts to get Clem as well, so AJ uses his own pocketknife to stab it once, then Clem finishes it off.

We start moving faster, and crash into a tree, squishing the walker with the keys. Clem and I kick the windshield down as fast as possible and she climbs out, turning the car on. She backs up into lots of walkers but one breaks into the car as we drive and we end up going so fast that we flip over.

I can't see, but I can hear Clementine calling out to AJ and I. I can feel someone lift me up. I open my eyes briefly, seeing the shadowy image of a boy with tanned skin and a mop of hair on his head.

After that, I was too tired, and I pass out in the boy's arms.
