Chapter Six
As Clementine and I search for any sign of AJ, and try to find our friends, my heart can't help but clench. I haven't know Javi and his family for long, but if anything happens to these people, I will still feel sad, like I did when AJ was taken from us. Of course, not as sad as that moment. Javi is a nice man, he reminds me of Kenney. After trying hard to find AJ, or clues of him, Clem and I are in the Medical Facillity. Clem is looking through the cabinets when suddenly I notice Javi standing in the doorway.
"Jesus," I mutter, "Javi, what happened to you?"
"Just..ran into a little trouble." He responds, holding his bleeding shoulder.
I begin explaining the situation, and then I get a close look at the open wound of Javi's.
"That's going to need more than just cleaning, y'know." Clem points out, "Doctor (Y/N) can stitch it for you."
Javi glances at me, confused.
I giggle, "It's just a nickname from when we were kids."
"Alright, go for it." He says, "But if I lose my arm, that's on you."
I nod, and he sits down in a chair. I look through the cabinets, searching for a needle and thread. I also find a box of pads. I chuckle, secretly passing them to Clem, since she just started hers. I'm lucky enough that mine is irregular, and comes every few months and before you ask, no, I'm not pregnant.
"Okay, sit still and don't breathe this in." I order, Javi listens as he slides his shirt off and I pour some peroxide onto a cloth, placing it on his open wound.
Javi already knew about Clem's thing because she mentioned it when I was looking for the needle and thread.
"Basically, Clem..that thing means that you could become a mom, if you wanted. Same for you two, (Y/N)..if you've already started." Javi says.
"Funny.." Clem replies, "I already felt like a mom."
I giggle, stitching Javi's wound, "That's because we're already moms, Clem. A mom doesn't need to give birth to be a mother, it's the heart that counts. We have that heart."
Clem smiles at my words, and I return the gesture, continuing to stitch Javi's wound. When I'm done, Javi thanks me and puts his shirt back on. That's when Lingard wakes back up.
"Hello, girls." He says, then he glances at Javi, "Javier..thought you were rotting in a cell with David. There any chance he got out, too? I hate to think about what Joan might do to him."
"It's none of your business." Javi replies, approaching the man.
"There's no need for that..tone." Lingard says, "Do I look like someone who gives a shit what you're up to? Frankly, I've had enough of backstabbing to last me a lifetime."
I cross my arms, "Why do you care about what happened to David? He deserves what's coming to him."
"If you think that, you don't know David." the doctor responds, coughing.
"We know he's the reason we lost AJ." Clem replies.
"When AJ recovered, David was the one who stepped up. He took personal responsibility for that kid."
"You say that like it's a good thing." I hiss, "I really doubt David was a positive influence."
"David's the reason the kid's better off now that he's ever been." Lingard wheezes, "You can be as mad as you want about how things panned out."
"(Y/N) and Clem are AJ's family. No family is 'better off' when you break them apart." Javi interrupts.
Lingard nods, "Maybe you're right, maybe AJ should be with Clem and (Y/N). All I know is that he's better than he was when he got here."
"No thanks to you or David." Clem and I say in unison.
"I stand by what I said." He replies.
"If David's taken such good care of him, why did he tell us to ask you where AJ is?" I hiss, grinding my teeth.
"That's what this is about then? You want to know where the boy is?" Lingard responds.
But then he grabs a syringe and sticks it in a bottle of something, I almost grab my katana that Clem and I stole back.
"What are you doing?" Javi finally asks.
"I..I just wanna die." Dr. Lingard replies, "I want you to inject this into me."
"Why don't you do it yourself." Javi asks.
"I can't, I'm a fuckin' coward." He responds, "When your brother found me, he got me to care about everything I'd given up on. My life, other people, even this goddamn place. Without him around, I don't want to care anymore."
"Just tell us where AJ is!" I scream, slamming my hand down on the table.
"Then you won't have any reason to do it." Lingard responds, handing the syringe to Javi.
Javi stares at it for a moment, and I'm almost expecting him to refuse. But thankfully, he takes the doctors arm and we finally get to know where AJ is.
"He's at the McCarroll Ranch, a few miles west of here."
I smile, "So he's really alive."
Javi then injects the doctor with the serum, and he soon passes out, so the three of us exit the room. We head back to a place where the rest of the group is holed up, and upon arrival, the group immediately starts arguing about what to do. Eventually, the group finally comes up with a solid plan.
A few minutes later, Javi, Clem and I are going after the truck for the plan. We find the vehicle in a garage, as Gabe and Kate show up to help. I notice some people, early risers, next door, and quickly duck.
"We gotta get some distance." I mutter to the group, "You get inside, Javi, Clem, Gabe, and I will push until we're far enough away to drive it without attracting attention."
Kate nods, climbing inside the truck, as the rest of us head to the back of it and begin to push. Once we push the truck a few feet outside the garage, we stop pushing and Kate hops out.
"We're gonna need to hotwire it, huh?" I ask, she giggles and nods.
"They left all their supplies around, bet there are some tools hanging around." Clem points out.
I check the toolbox and find a hammer, as well as some wire cutters. I cut the three wires and put the battery with the ignition and then spark the other two just as walker break through the fence. We hop in the truck and drive a few blocks away from the square.
"What now?" Kate asks.
"We wait for Ava to call us on the walkie." Javi responds.
Javi and Kate start talking while Clem, Gabe, and I sit in the back of the truck together.
"So uh, how did you two meet?" Gabe asks.
I smile, glancing at my sister, "When we were kids, we went to the same school. Clem was the quiet, shy kid, while I was a loud obnoxious one. On our first day, I approached her and sat down with her, talking about unicorns and rainbows. We had a connection right from the start. We grew to be best friends, but when we turned six, the outbreak happened while I was at Clem's house for a playdate. Our babysitter was murdered and Clem's parents were out of town. Thankfully, we found a man named Lee. He helped us get strong, and survive. We've been together ever since."
Gabe sadly smiles, I bet he can tell by the look on my face that I loved Lee, and that he's dead.
"It's an execution over here!" Ava suddenly says from the walkie-talkie, "She's planning to hang David, in front of the whole crowd! You gotta get over here, now! Don't bring the truck. If they see it, they'll kill him right away."
All of us climb out of the truck, but Kate decides to stay in the truck. Clem, Gabe, Javi, and I walk together until we reach the square. When we arrive, Joan shows the dead bodies that Javi and others have killed, claiming that David killed them.
Soon, she notices Javi and calls him up and starts asking about Doctor Lingard. Then, when she mentions Eleanor, I grind my teeth.
"Your friend, Eleanor said you were coming here today to take me out! I wonder how you thought you were going to be able to pull it off." Joan cackles.
I glance over at Eleanor, and have to hold myself back from attacking her. Then, Tripp and Ava are brought out from the back, and Javi has to choose between them. He tries to choose Tripp to live, but Joan tells him about betrayal and orders her guards to shoot the man instead, letting Ava live.
Javi gets angry, and I do too, but when we try to approach the guards aim their guns at us.
"This isn't how we do this!" Clint yells.
"Stop her, Clint!" I scream, "This isn't the process you trusted, is it!?"
"It's not!" He responds, "Everyone put your guns away, we're gonna handle this peacefully!"
The guards comply, but David wants us to shoot Joan. I glance at Javi, and he gives me a nod.
"Go to hell, you bitch!" I yell, taking out my pistol and shooting the woman straight through the forehead.
Quickly, the members of Richmond sprint away. One of the guards kicks the stool that David was standing on, making him start choking to death. The whole area erupts into panic. The guards start shooting but people keep getting in our way as Javi and I try to get up to the stage. Gabe grabs David's legs and Javi uses the stool to cut the rope. Then the three of us move him away. David chases after Clint, and so Gabe goes with him. Javi and I rush over to Clementine, since a mans about to approach her and shoot.
I slide over with my machete and cut the guys head off, then I flip over and grab the railing of the subway station entrance, landing beside Clem.
"Why'd you have to go and shoot her, (Y/N)?" Clem asks, "We had a way out of this!"
I smile sadly at my sister, "I've been holding that anger in for a while, I had to let it out sometime."
My sister stares at me for a moment, but she can't speak as a smoke grenade is thrown down the stairs, and it erupts. The entire area looks like it's a warzone. I hear the truck approaching, and I realize that Kate has come for us. Javi tries to get her attention but a man throws a malitoff at the truck. Kate freaks out and crashes into the wall, but gas from the truck starts to leak. Before anyone can get to her, the gas ignites and explodes, breaking a large hole in the wall.
"Well shit, there goes your girlfriend, Javi."
