Chapter Four

We soon come to a spot where Tripp stops us.

"I've got some bad news." He says, "We got a bunch of cars clogging the underpass. Too many to drive through, though."

Clem and I exit the car as Tripp, Conrad, Gabe, and Javi start looking for a way to move the cars. I can overhear Javi and Tripp talking about Conrad and his 'dark day', but Tripp then mentions me and I try not to show a reaction on my face.

"(Y/N) and Clementine have come a long way too." the man points out, "I know that Clementine can be easy to read but (Y/N) is different. She can block out her emotions to make it seem like she's okay, even when she's not. Please take care of her, and her sister."

I swallow absent-mindedly and turn away from the two men. I clench my fists and grind my teeth, trying to stop myself from freaking out. I've always been good at hiding my emotions, especially from Clementine. After all these years, she still has no idea that I'm not the happy, go-lucky girl that she thinks I am. But when someone who knows about my secret mentions it, I can't help but get angry. Thankfully though, I'm able to hold in my anger.

"(Y/N)." Clem's voice startles me out of my concentrating state, and I whirl around on my heel to face her.

    "Yes?"

"Do you trust these people?" She responds.

I nod slowly, "The only person that I might not trust would be Conrad. His mental state must be through the roof."

    My sister nods, "I agree."

Soon, Javi is able to move the car in the way on the way to Richmond. Except, the squeaking of the car against the cement is really loud, and I can almost hear the walkers approaching us. Quickly, I jump into action. I pull out my pistol and my machete, rushing towards the beasts, shooting the ones that are further away and slicing the heads off of ones that are closer. Eleanor drives through the rest of the walkers, except more are still coming.

"Get to the roof!" I order, the group quickly listens.

I'm the very last to start climbing up the ladder, because I'm the one shooting the walkers as they try to approach. Clementine, before she heads up the ladder with the others, moves a trash bin over to block the other walkers from getting too closer. Finally, when everyone else is up the ladder, I stop shooting and climb up as well. But as I do, a walker grabs my foot.

    "Shit." I curse.

Clementine drapes herself over me, grabbing my machete and stabbing it into the head of the walker. She leans back up, sliding the machete back in it's holster and grabs my dominant hand. She pulls me up and immediately, Tripp starts acting crazy.

    "Calm down." Clementine mutters.

The man turns to her, yelling, "Calm down? I'm not gonna fuckin' calm down! Eleanor's out there alone right now!"

I immediately step in front of my sister, grabbing my machete. I step closer to Tripp, displaying a crazy look on my face.

"Be careful with your next words, Tripp." I grit my teeth, "Because I won't hesitate to hurt you if you hurt anyone I care about. Eleanor is fine, they got to Richmond, I bet."

Tripp's eyes are full of fear, but he keeps his head high. Eventually, he backs off and I stand down.

Suddenly, I notice a black cloak in the corner of my vision, "Get down! There's someone over there!"

The group listens, and we all find cover.

"Watch out, the guy could have a rifle." Tripp points out.

I take a breath, "Whoever you are, we've got guns and we're prepared to use them against you!"

When Javi turns around to look at the guy, he's gone.

"Stay here and keep behind cover, I'm going to see what I can find out." He says, but I grab his wrist before he can move.

"I'm coming with you, Javi." I respond.

The man reluctantly nods and we climb up, heading towards where the guy was last seen. I keep my pistol aimed near him, and I see a glimpse of him move. Javi and I take cover, before deciding that it's okay to move again. We climb up two wood boards and I aim the gun at the back of the guy's skull.

"I'm gonna need you to turn around for me, sir." I order, "Slowly."

The man doesn't listen. I approach him, as does Javi. Turns out it's just a dummy. I hear the click of a gun, and I tense up. Javi and I drop our guns and turn around. The man before us has a thick beard, and long hair, as well as bushy eyebrows.

"Now, I won't shoot unless you make me." He says, "I just want to talk. I overheard that argument just now. Are you some kind of broken tribe, are your friends going to shoot me?"

I shake my head, "They're good people. They won't, unless we tell them to."

The man chuckles, "Wow, you're so menacing, girl. Listen, I know you're going to Richmond, so you've got something to do with what's going on there. Tell me everything you know or-"

Suddenly, a whistle catches him off-guard. I take the chance to grab the gun, I raise it high to the sky to avoid getting shot but I hear the click of another gun and I turn to see Clementine.

    "Don't move."

The man listens, and allows me to drop the gun.

"Are you with the 'New Frontier'?" Tripp asks.

I shake my head, peaking into the man's collar, "There's no brand, so I don't think so."

"Look, I'm telling you. I'm on my way to Richmond, just like you. I lost touch with some good people there when the 'New Frontier' took over."

I curse, "What did you just say?"

"The New Frontier, they took over Richmond." he responds.

"Fuck, shit..fuck shit FUCK!" I yell, taking out my machete and slicing some of the nearby bushes.

Clementine immediately comes to my aid, and calms me down by rubbing my shoulders. We lock eyes, and I drop my machete, embracing her tightly. We both have to face the 'New Frontier' again. This time though, maybe, we can save AJ.

"There's a tunnel that runs under the James River, from what I hear, it should be a straight shot into Richmond." the mysterious man explains, "I could lead you guys there. But since (Y/N) here said you're good people and all, maybe you could lower those guns first?"

Before Conrad can reply, I step in, "Lower them, if he tries anything I'll end him quickly."

I pick up the machete and clean off the dirt that it picked up, checking to see how sharp the edge is.

"What do we call you?" I ask.

"Sorry," he replies, "forgot to introduce myself. My name's Paul, but my friends call me Jesus."

I giggle quietly as the group of us start heading towards the tunnel that Jesus was talking about. Memories because of the mention of the 'New Frontier', meeting Ava and becoming a part of the group.

I snap back into reality and Clem starts talking to Javi.

"Look, I appreciate you keeping quiet about my sister and I and the 'New Frontier'," she begins, "But what (Y/N) told you earlier..it's not the whole truth. We weren't their prisoners, we were one of them."

She lifts up her left sleeve, revealing the brand. I take a quick breath, lifting up my dominant arm's sleeve as well, revealing my own brand. Javi walks beside us, shocked.

"We're not asking you to forgive us." I add, "We just want you to understand that we were alone, and scared. We had nobody."

"Tell me you're not still one of them." Javi hisses.

Clem and I speak in unison, "No way, believe us."

"I wanted to explain," Clem continues, "If they're really in control at Richmond, we can't let them see us. When we reach the other side of this tunnel, we're leaving."

We turn a corner and in the dark, I can hear a walker. Just the sound of them prompts me to pull out my machete. I run forward and slice the heads off. Conrad though, he starts using his shotgun. We run through to avoid the walkers that are on the way and approach a train car, when inside, everyone else starts running forward. The walkers can't follow us, so I turn to my sister.

"Clem, Javi, and I will block the door, you guys go ahead and make sure it's clear."

Gabe though, he refuses to leave. Clem, Gabe, and I all block the door as Javi looks around for something to barricade the door with. He breaks a pole off of a stage and slides it through the door handle. When we start running towards the others, I turn my head around and see Conrad, pointing a gun at my head.

"What the hell are you doing?" Javi asks.

"I heard you three, you think I'm stupid?" Conrad replies, "Finish your little story, now."

    "We need to keep moving-"

    "No, talk."

"Whatever you think you heard, you heard wrong." Javi hisses.

"Bullshit," the black man replies, "Roll up your sleelves."

He pulls at my arm, and I reluctantly do so.

"Just let us go, asshole." I hiss, "We did it to protect someone! We were entrusted to protect them, we hate the 'New Frontier' just as much as you do!"

Conrad ignores most of my sentence, "Let you go? You're both too valuable for that. We bring them to Richmond, and they'll give us whatever we want."

"They won't bargan with you, you don't know them."

    "Won't know until we try."

Javi pulls out his own gun, "How's that for an answer?"

Conrad grits his teeth, but I stand tall.

"If you're going to shoot anybody, shoot me." I growl.

"How about I shoot your little boyfriend here instead?" He replies, grabbing Gabe.

First of all, asshole, he's not my boyfriend.

Second of all, you just CROSSED A LINE!

"Just tell Clem and (Y/N) that this is how it's gotta be. And then we can all step outside!" Conrad says.

Javi takes a breath, I can see that he's thinking hard about the decision. Clem glances at me, noticing my anger. As she reaches out to calm me down, Javi shoots Conrad and his limp body falls to the floor as Gabe jumps out of his grasp.
