Chapter Eight
What Kate does next surprises all of us, she waltz up to her former husband and slaps him, "How fucking dare you!? What will it take, David? What will it take to show you that you do not get to do that? We are not your soldiers! Runaway home, be a deserter. I am done with you. Let's go, Javi."
"Why the fuck do you think he would go with you?" David hisses back.
Kate walks up to Javi and kisses him, then turns back, "Tell him."
"I love her man. We're in love!" Javi finally says.
David clenches his fist, and starts to pace, "I should've know. I should've known the night Pa died. The night that you weren't there. Blood is worthless to you. Just like he was to you, just like I am to you. Well it's finally time for you to learn what blood really means!"
He approaches Javi and punches him straight in the jaw, earning a terrified scream from Gabe and a strange glare from me.
"What do you have to say for yourself, brother?" David asks.
"I love you." Javi chokes out.
"No...you don't get to say that!" his brother replies, punching him in the gut and his head.
Then as Javi is on the ground, David grabs a crowbar and approaches his brother again.
"I love you." Javi says again.
This time though, as David approaches Javi and goes to swing, I jump up and run in between them. The man doesn't have enough time to process that I'm there, and swings anyways. The metal object collides with my head and I'm brought to the ground. David ignores me, blinded by rage and attempts to use the object to choke Javi.
Despite the painful headache I've just earned, I get up off the ground and rush at David. I push him to the ground. A walker appears out of nowhere because of the noise we were making and I slide out my machete, slicing the monster's head clean off. We all head back into the garage, but David shuts the door and drives off with Gabe in the passenger seat.
"You have to decide, Javi." Clem eventually says after a discussion, "Choose who you're coming with."
"I can't let Kate save Richmond by herself," Javi responds, "It's too dangerous."
"Okay, then I'll go after Gabe."
I sigh, "Will you be okay, sis? I want to help save Richmond too."
Clementine nods, and we hug again, "I'll be fine."
I watch as my sister drives off on a motorcycle, hoping that it won't be the last time I see her. I climb up on the bulldozer as Kate drives and Javi climbs on the other side. We drive through Richmond and watch people on horses stomp on walkers, and Kate drives through them, and I shoot others. Jesus appears and he asks us to open the gate. Javi gets in the 'busket' gets to the controls. I watch as he searches for the button. As it opens, he climbs back onto the bulldozer with us. We head through the gate and come to a large group of walkers. As Kate drives, Javi and I shoot the walkers.
Eventually, we both get fed up with the slow shooting and just go all out. I still have some ammo, but Javi runs out so he takes over as Kate climbs out of the driver's seat and starts shooting walkers with me. Javi picks up a truck that's fallen over with the busket and heads towards where the hole that the walkers can get through. They plug the hole and we all exit the bulldozer.
Suddenly, Clem and Gabe appear together, with the boy slung over her shoulder.
"What happened, Clem?" I question.
"Their car got overrun with walkers and crashed. I was barely able to save Gabe." She responds.
"What about David?" Javi asks.
"David's dead."
"What..no no!" Javi yells.
I feel sorry, of course, everyone should. But, David wasn't the best of men. A frown appears on my lips, but nothing more. Clem tells Javi and Kate around where she found Javi and David, so the two headed off.
Three days later, things started becoming normal again. Seeing so many people just running around reminded me of the old days. Clementine and I watch as Jesus leaves Richmond, so we approach Javi.
"I'm guessing you two are out of here too, huh?" He asks.
I nod, as does Clem, "We have to find AJ."
"We've waited so long." Clem adds, she pauses, "But could you do one last favor for me before we leave?"
When she sits down with scissors at a table, I feel shocked.
"You want him to cut your hair, what about me!?" I fake gasp, "You betrayed me! I'm supposed to be your barber!"
Clem giggles, "Well now it's Javi!"
I pout, glaring at a nearby tree, "Hmph."
"I used to do this for my niece." Javi says, changing the subject, "She used to say I was terrible at it."
"Were you?" Clem questions.
"That's none of your business."
Suddenly, Clem's face saddens, "I'm gonna miss Gabe...I mean, he's super annoying but..I've gotten used to having him around."
I giggle behind my hand, knowing the truth.
"Y'know.." Javi says, "the dude's got a mondo crush on you."
"He does not!" Clem yells, making both of us laugh.
"Oh my god, you have a crush on him too!"
"I do not!" the girl responds, before sighing, "I'm gonna stab you with those scissors."
"I have to see AJ, Javi." Clem mutters after a brief moment of silence, "I have to see that he's okay." She pauses, "Do you think he remembers (Y/N) and I?"
"Who could forget you two. No one who knew you, I guarantee it!" Javi responds, prompting a smile to appear on my face.
"Everyone told us he was better off." Clem says, turning around, "After everything that's happened, I'm starting to think they're right. I don't know if we were good moms or not."
"Did you love him?" Javi asks us both.
"With all of my heart." Clem and I answer in unison.
"Then, of course, you were." He says.
We brightly smile and Javi continues to cut Clem's hair.
"Gabe told me you used to play baseball." She says.
"I did. I loved it." Javi replies.
"He told me you fucked it all up, too." I add.
Javi starts cutting, but smiles anyway, "Yep, sure did."
"Well, you survived." Clem adds.
"I had to."
"But you loved it, how do you survive that?"
Javi chuckles, "That's what's good about a broken heart. When you're looking at it all broken and shattered on the floor..you figure out the pieces you need versus the ones you liked. If you're ready to move on, that is."
When Javi's done, I think Clem looks cute. I guess Javi doesn't, because he grabs Clem's hat starts talking about baseball.
"Did your dads ever teach you about baseball?" He asks.
"No, not really." We both reply.
"Well, you two come back, and I'll tell you all about it."
"It's a deal." I respond.
We shake hands.
"If we bring AJ back with us, will you teach him too?" Clem asks.
"You bet." Javi grins, "He belongs with you two, you're like his sisters. Bring him back."
We both smile at each other, and later the gate to the outside is opened. Kate, Gabe, and Javi come to see us on our way. The three of them wave, as Clem and I walk away into the sunshine.
We're coming to find you, AJ.
