Chapter 6
Before leaving the hospital, (Jess gets another ginger ale,) and a nurse stops us, wanting to know more. We know that if we tell her, the entire plan will blow up in our faces, so she tells us to wait in the emergency room.
Luckily, Allie's new found criminal knowledge let her come up with a plan. Allie subtly points to a security camera, and starts talking as quietly as possible.
"We all go over to the doors, and stand in front of them. It's the camera's poorly located blind spot. We wait there for a little while. After a little while, Asia and I go back to the seats and wait. We wait for ten minutes, then Jess comes back in, we look all causal and stuff and leave. The security guards are all idiots here, they'll forget about this little chat until it's too late. Got it?" She looks to us both.
"Hey Jess, remind me. Have we looked in the direction of the camera yet?" I ask, totally ignoring Allie's plan.
"Not to my knowledge, why?" Jess responds.
I get up, cross the room and walk out the front door.
"Oh. They never made it that easy." I hear Allie say.
"It's the mafia, how is it supposed to be easy?" Jess gets up just as quickly and leaves causally, with Allie following close behind.
Once we get far enough away from the hospital, we bolt back to the Warren Gang's building. Allie sneaks us into the back entrance, but she stops before we go in.
"Considering I'm about to break a golden rule, can you keep watch out here, Jess?" Allie whispers. Jess nods. Allie leaves the door open just a crack, just in case Jess has to run in.
Allie walks a little ways down the hall, ad prepares to knock on the door, but she stops and turns to me.
"I think Ben and I should talk alone. Watch out here." She demands.
"Yes, your highness." I say sarcastically.
"Well, do you want to die? No? Then listen to what I say for once." She whispers.
"Do you know why I never listen? Because I'm supposed to be in charge. I'm one year older." I'm getting into this, right here, right now.
"So you're the biggest, the strongest, the smartest?" Allie puts her hands on her hips.
"Yeah I am." I say.
"Who survived the mafia the best? Well, you almost got shot, but I was accepted as one of them." She gets a smug look on her face.
"Yeah, because you're evil enough for their standards." I spit out in a hushed whisper-shout.
"This is not the time." Her eyes go wide.
"No, no this is the time. We are going to talk about this. Or are you trying to dodge responsibility again?" I lean forward.
"Dodging responsibility?"
"As if you don't know. You were gone for two years. Do you know what it's like to have a brother who points to your picture on the wall, every day, and says, 'Who's that?' And have him not believe you when you say, 'that's your sister.' Two years you disappeared."
"For the last time, I was kidnapped!" She whisper-shouts. The door creaks open as I move out of anyone's field of vision. The boy I saw Allie with last night stands in the doorway.
"Allie? What's wrong?" He asks.
Allie takes a deep breath, takes his hands, and then looks him in the eye. "We need to talk." Ben stands aside and lets her come in, shutting the door behind her.
For the next few minutes, I hear shouting, crying, and eventually, a calm. I couldn't hear any clattering or gunshots, so the best I could hope was that it went peacefully.
I listened at the door. "Allie... don't do this to me."
"I'm going anyway. Even if you hunt me down."
There's a pause.
"Then I'm not going to. I'll say you died when you were out walking. But please, don't ever come back."
Allie breathes a sigh of relief. "Thank you."
There's a little more talking, when I hear a gun reload from down the hallway. Out of the corner of my eye, I see a man pointing a gun at me. By the time I turn around, it's too late, he's about to pull the trigger. As if on instinct, I duck, knowing that he'll have enough time to change direction anyway. I hear a shot go off, but I don't feel a bullet. I stand up, with blood spatter on my clothes before looking down.
"Jess!"
