WHAT'S IT GONNA BE
II. WHAT'S IT GONNA BE?
There was one thing Sirene Black had been hoping for her whole life - freedom, so to be attending a boarding school, where she gets to do magic, have fun and make new friends, without her parents doing a background check on them seemed ever so liberating to her.
She had obviously grown up being friends with stuck-up nosy bitches that she wanted nothing to do with, considering most of her friends were purebloods and her cousins, who were raised in the same condition as her - only they loved it.
Their superiority complex was what pushed her away from her family, she believed that having a prejudiced mind will only do you and the people around you harm, that being said just because she believed that's how it worked, doesn't mean she follows her own principles, as much as she wanted to have a fair and bias free mind, she just couldn't.
So, it was safe to say she didn't want anything to do with Slytherin - especially seeing her cousins and her parents acting the way they did.
She had been secretly hoping for any house but Slytherin the whole train ride, she wished it to be Ravenclaw - but Hufflepuff sounded nice too.
The whistling of the train signaled that it had finally arrived at the destined place -Hogmeades station- there were kids already rushing off of it, trying to find carriages and their friends. Sirene, Sirius, James, Lupin and Marlene had taken the same boat to reach the castle, excited about finally seeing it.
When they got off the boats they followed a certain giant man, his name was Hagrid, to the school building, Sirene heard collective gasps as everyone took in the scene - Hogwarts was extremely huge.
When they finally got inside the building they realized they had to walk even more.
"Ugh, how much longer are they going to make us walk?" Sirene asked Sirius who looked tired as well, "I'm telling you - this should count as child labor, Siri"
"Don't be so dramatic" Sirius said to Sirene who gasped mockingly.
"Dramatic? Me? Never!"
They laughed a bit at that before Sirius said, "The wait will be worth it, I hope"
"I hope we're both in the same house" Sirene said with hopeful eyes, rubbing her hands together because of the cold and glee at the same time. This was all very exciting to her and almost every child.
"Me too, Siri!"
"What house do you reckon you'll be in?" Marlene asked Sirene, but she barely gave her the time to respond as she continued with a huge smile, "I think I'll be in Hufflepuff!"
"Well, my family has a history with being in Slytherin, but I'm determined to not be one" Sirene told Marlene who nodded in return, as they made their way to the castle stairs - they were awestruck.
"Are you seeing this Sirius?" James asked him with an excited grin on his face.
"Seeing it, and loving it"
"Everyone gather around please" A stern voice spoke from the top of the stairs, Sirene stood on her tip-toes to look at the person that the voice belonged to. There stood a lady with a tight bun, black robes, oval glasses and a stern gaze. Sirius and Sirene made a mental note not to prank her in any way, because truth be told she doesn't seem like someone who would enjoy them.
"I'm professor Minerva Mcgonagall, the start of term banquet will begin shortly, but before that you will be sorted into your house - there are four houses, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. The sorting ceremony is important because your house will be your family within Hogwarts. You will share classes, dormitories, and your common room with them" she said before fixing her glasses and continuing.
"I hope whichever house you're in, you will be a credit to. There are also house points - that will be awarded for your triumphs and taken away for any sort of rule breaking, the house with the most points will be awarded the house cup. I suggest you all smarten up" she shifted her gaze to a girl with paint stains on her robes and then to James who's hair was as messy as ever. "As much as you can before I return for you, wait patiently and silently"
As she left the staircase room to go into the Great Hall, then students broke into a fit of whispers and giggles.
"Remind me to never prank her" Sirine and Sirius said to each other, simultaneously making James and Marlene look at them weirdly before fixing their robes and their hair.
"Does my hair look okay?" James asked Sirius who shrugged not wanting to lie.
"Didn't your father invent the sleekeazy hair potion?" Sirene asked James, snorting at the condition of his hair.
"It doesn't work on me" he said with a wince remembering the last time he'd use one and how it had ended up creating knots in his hair.
"Don't fret, Marlene! Your hair looks fine!" Sirene told Marlene who was still messing with her hair trying to flatten her curly hair a bit so it didn't look like a mane.
"Easy for you to say, dreamy hair" Marlene said with a scoff finally giving up.
"What can I say? I was born with dreamy hair?" Sirene told her flipping her hair in a dramatic way.
"So was I"
"It's a Black thing, really"
"Making friends already, are you Black?" A boy with long platinum blonde - almost white - hair stepped out of the crowd and eyed the two siblings.
"Yes, I am Malfoy, which is more than what you'll do in a year" She spat back at him making his face go red with anger.
"You little-"
"Are we going to have a problem, Mr. Malfoy?" A stern voice that belonged to Professor Mcgonagall said.
"No, Professor" He said his voice venomous as he stepped back to where he was.
"Follow me, students" Professor Mcgonagall said and so the students did, as they entered the Great Hall the first thing everyone saw was the open ceiling, or at least it looked like an open ceiling.
"I've read somewhere that it's actually bewitched to look like that" A redhead named Lily Evans said to the brunette walking with her.
"Well, obviously what do you suppose we'll do when it rains?" Sirius said rolling his eyes and releasing a snigger.
"Good one."
"Sirius, don't be mean!" James said to him, giving Lily a handsome smile pushing his hair back, "I'm James"
Lily didn't respond to that, instead she raised her head high and talked to the boy with greasy hair who was walking beside her.
"I like her."
Sirine and Sirius both scoffed whereas Marlene giggled to herself at the thought of James chasing the same girl the whole year.
The kids made their way to the sorting hat that was singing a song right now, and then it was time. Kids got called one by one -
"Starling, Alexandra"
"Ravenclaw!"
"Malfoy, Lucius"
"Slytherin!"
"Fortescue, Alice"
"Gryffindor!"
"Black, Sirius" At that Sirene and Sirius both held their breaths, Sirine gave Sirius a small comforting nod as he moved forward but it didn't take long for the sorting hat to declare -
"Gryffindor!"
The houses applauded for them as he took his seat at the end of the table, with a triumphant smile on his face.
"Potter, James"
The hat barely touched his head before screaming 'Gryffindor'. James joined Sirius on the table, giving him a fist bump.
"Evans, Lily"
"Gryffindor!"
"McKinnon, Marlene"
"Gryffindor!"
"Salvatore, Skyler"
"Hufflepuff!"
"Patil, Puja"
"Hufflepuff!"
"Black, Sirene" Sirene stood still, suddenly all the confidence fading away and her heart wanting to jump out of her throat. This was it. This was her chance to prove she isn't like her parents.
She took a seat on the stool, smiling at Sirius who gave her a thumbs up - wishing her good luck - as Mcgonagall placed the hat on her head.
'Hmm, interesting... I see ambition and the hunger to prove yourself, perhaps Slytherin would be a good fit? But wait, there's more - I also see loyalty, and the need to speak out about injustice, maybe Hufflepuff would be fine?'
'Why are you asking me? You're the hat'
'Plenty of courage I see, and the wits, I think any house would be fit. Say girl, which house would you like to be in?"
'Gryffindor! My brother's in it. I want to be with him'
'Gryffindor it is then!'
'Wait is it that ea-'
"GRYFFINDOR!" The hat screamed, everyone applauded again, Sirius even whistled a little.
Sirine almost skipped out of happiness, but she controlled her want to do so and walked gracefully to the table and pulling Sirius into a small side hug.
"Mum and dad are going to love this" She said to him, both of them with a satisfied grin on their face as they chatted to Marlene and James who were both excited to be there as well, soon Remus joined them and the five of them spent the night more talking then eating.
Well, the four of them, Marlene wouldn't stop eating even to talk, but she would occasionally speak every now and then.
✯ ✯ ✯ ✯
After the feast, they had followed their house prefect to the common room where they were told the directions of their dorm rooms.
"Hey, Sirine" Sirius asked his sister who was busy almost nodding off on the couch, "How do you think mother and father would react?"
"Uh" She winced a bit at the thought of their reaction, they would either accept them - which she highly doubts they would or they would disown them - that seemed more believable to her, "I don't know, there might be a meltdown or few but eh" she shrugged.
"Well, at least we'll be together" he said with a small smile.
Sirine smiled a bit before getting an idea and replicating her mother with a bit of an exaggerated touch but it wasn't that far off "I reckon it'll go something like this - 'Oh Reggie, my perfect darling child- you're the only good thing in this world! Be in Slytherin and make us proud'!" she said turning her voice extremely nasally.
Sirius laughed before joining in, "Sirius, Sirine, what are you doing here? Go to your rooms!"
"And remember don't make a sound" both of them completed the sentence together before laughing at it themselves again, it didn't seem funny to anyone else but them, causing people to stare at them with concern.
"Hey, Sirine, come up! It's time to sleep." Marlene called out to Sirine from the staircase that got them up to their dorm.
Sirine looked over, yelling out, "Coming!". She gave Sirius a nod before running off to join her friend as they walked up to the dorm room together.
When they opened the door, they found the redhead and brunette they'd stumbled upon earlier, but that wasn't what was on their mind, both of their gaze travelled to one bed by the window, the only window bunk that was unclaimed.
Marlene and Sirine ran towards it but Sirine reached it first and threw herself face-first on it.
"No fair!" Marlene whined to Sirine who was too busy smiling at the small victory, "I wanted the window bunk!"
"You can take mine, I don't mind" a small dreamy voice said that belonged to the brunette - Alice Fortescue - who had already changed into pajamas that had cats all over them and a sleep mask with the matching pattern on her head, she was also wearing mismatched socks and her short boyish looking hair was pinned back.
"Woah, really?"
"Yeah"
"Thank You! I'm Marlene by the way!" Marlene said introducing herself as she sat down beside Alice who smiled and said "I know, I was there while you got sorted"
"Well just for the sake then" Sirene said to Alice who looked over to see her putting candy under her pillow, "I'm Sirene Black"
"Lily Evans"
"Alice Fortescue"
The girls then spent almost all night talking about how excited they were for the classes tomorrow, her parents popped in her head for just a bit reminding her that she was not supposed to be friends with people who aren't pureblood, but she pushed them out and hoped that Sirius had settled in as well as she has.
Turns out the blood of the covenant is actually thicker than the water of the womb, even though she'd known these girls for barely an hour, she still felt more connected to them than she ever did with her family - except Sirius - and so she fell asleep with a smile on her face, entering a world that is entirely her own, swimming across the deepest ocean and gliding over the highest cloud.
