Last second save!
Hawks POV:
I was on my patrol when I spotted Endeavor chasing a criminal with a hostage. The man had a young kid in his arms. The little girl was screaming and crying in fear. It was sad to see something like this happen to a young kid. Flying down to Endeavor, I offered him my help and he took it immediately. That's how we got to this messed up situation in the first place.
Why can't he just let the girl get away from him?
I was currently standing beside Endeavor. My feathers were ready and up in the air. In the slightest change of situation, I would immediately capture him or get the girl out of his hand with the help of my feathers. We both stood in a hallway of this rundown school. Endeavor got ready beside me to fry that villain in front of us and that's when it happened.
It was happened so fast neither of us could respond do the situation the right way. Endeavor threw a fireball at the man and my feathers were ready to get the girl out of his hand seconds before the fireball would hit its target.
WHAAAAAT?!
WHAT THE HELL IS A KID DOING HERE?!
A boy came out of nowhere and hit the target. Moments later, the little girl ran to me while Endeavor went to get the criminal. Said boy had no chance of escaping the fireball intended for the criminal. I watched how the fireball graced him. I could smell the burned flesh. The kid only stood there and once our eyes connected, he sprinted away. What's more disturbing was that greenette didn't even scream or react to the injury the slightest. It wasn't a small burn.
Jesus Christ!
Me: Hey Kid!
He didn't respond but instead bolted around the corner.
Me: Wait kid! Stop!
Those burns... How is he able to even move with them?
The small girl was hugging me the moment she came to my side. I wanted to get to the boy as soon as possible so I bent down to her.
Me: Hey little one, can you be good girl and stay with Endeavor over there?
The girl was hesitating but I couldn't wait any longer! I needed to see that boy. He needed help more than anyone in this situation and something about the way he looked at me was familiar. I, however, couldn't wrap my mind around it. I felt sad and hurt at the same time, watching him recive the injuries from Endeavor. I didn't know why exactly but I had these strong feelings to protect him.
His eyes! Where did I see them?
I took the girl and placed her near Endeavor.
Me: Watch over her, I'm going to go get that boy!
Without letting him reject me or say a word, I took off. I gave him no other choice as I was already flying through the hallways to get that boy. The hallways were luckily big enough for me to maneuver and fly around. The moment I got to around the corner the greenette was already gone.
How can he be so fast with such kind of injuries? What was he doing here in the first place?
I dispatched some feathers in order to search for him and sure enough I found movements which were leading to the roof of the building. So I went there as fast as I could. The moment I opened the door leading to the rooftop, I was met with a scene that not only shocked me but also broke my heart. I didn't know why I was feeling so sad and attached to the boy when it was the first time we meet.
I watched him go backwards and all the puzzle pieces fell together. An abandoned school building, a kid that looked almost homeless, possible child neglectance, child abuse judging by his respond earlier while receiving the injury and the kid didn't care for his self-being back in the hallway. There was one obvious reason as to why he was here!
I had a suicidal kid in front of me!
God, what happened to you? What lead you to do this?
Me: Hmm, you know you look hungry and I am currently craving chickens. How about we go and eat something together?
It was a weak try to get the kid distracted or confused.
I took a step to get near the boy. He stepped back. He still wasn't too close to the edge, I still had some time to figure out what to do.
How can I change your mind?
Me: No? Ah to bad and here I was missing my chickens.
He still wasn't responding and that's when I realized he had headphones on.
Does this kid not hear me?
Me: If you can hear me than please give me a sign.
Yep, he totally doesn't hear me! Is he ignoring me on purpose?
I took another step and the kid was now standing nearly on the edge.
I now was motioning him to come to me and I took another step.
He stepped back.
Me (whisper shouting): Common kid! Stop backing away! I am not gonna hurt you, nor scream at you! Just come to me, please! I beg you!
I opened my arms to offer a hug and took another step and that's when the kid took his faithful last step.
Me: NOOOO!
I stood there frozen in place for a second. I needed time to process what just happened! A freaking kid around 11 to 12 years old jumped off the roof just in front of me!
I ran to the edge as fast as I could and looked down. He was still falling and wasn't even half way down.
Me: What should I do? What can I do?
My feathers came back and I realized once again in my life that I had wings!
HOW STUPID CAN I BE?
I jumped of the building and positioned my wings in a better angel to fall down faster. The kid was in arms reach and I grabbed him. He looked at me with big eyes and immediately hugged me for his life. Once I made sure I had him in my arms, I opened my wings again. It was already too late to fly or glide away so I braced myself for the impact. Opening my wings completely and flapping them to stop the fall. In the end I somehow managed stop in midair only about 5 centimeters above the ground.
I heard something fall down and I looked at the item. It was the kids headphones.
Me: *exhale* Kid, are you all right?
No response. He wasn't even looking at me he buried his face in my neck and was trembling badly. The kids breathing wasn't normal either it was way too fast and unsteady. I sat down and let the child rest in my lap. I did this only to be able to get a read of his pulse. Taking my now free hand and placing it at his neck. It was too quick even for adrenaline.
A panic attack?!
Me: Shh, it all right, you are safe!
While I had him on my lap, I took the opportunity and looked him over. His burns where 3rd degree burns and he had some scars of old injuries. They looked like scars one only get from a fight. I knew this since it wasn't something uncommon among the heroes but he was only a kid.
Where did you get them? Maybe bullying?
Me: Everything is fine, feathers!
I didn't exactly know what to do by a panic attack so I did the best I could think of.
Me: You wanna hear a story?
Distraction is always a good thing! Right?
Me: So the first time I wanted to learn how to fly. I climbed up a tree and just threw myself down. Well more like tried to do that. The tree was a really really big tree and I didn't know how to fly back then. I climbed it up and the moment I was at the highest branch, I instantly regretted my decision. I was there frozen in place for hours! Can you imagine that? I was like a scared cat and the firefighter needed to get me down! They immediately scolded me for what I did.
The kid in my arms relaxed a little bit. He stopped burring his face and looked up at me. It looked like he wanted to say something but couldn't speak.
Then I spottet blood dripping down his neck.
Me: DID YOU HURT YOUR HEAD?
The greenette flinched and I saw more blood dripping down.
I took a hand and turned his head to see where the blood is coming from and there I saw that his ears where bleeding.
Me (whispering): Is your hearing sensitive?
He instantly nodded.
Me (whispering): Are you mute?
He nodded again.
Me (whispering): I am sorry for shouting! I don't know sign language soo we can't communicate that way.
It was the second time I needed it in order to communicate with another person.
I really need to learn sign language. You know what I will learn this, starting from today on!
I felt bad that he had an injurie because of me. In a world where people had quirks I completely forgot the possibility that he could have some sort of enhancement quirk.
Me (whispering): I am going to stand up and get you to a hospital.
Before I could stand up, the kid let go of me and jumped away. He was now standing in front of me with shaky legs and shook his head violently!
Me(whispering): NO?! That's not an option here feathers! Just look at you!
The kid looked at me and then blinked. He turned to his injuries and looked up at me, shrugging his shoulders. He made a gesture that was saying 'So what's the problem exactly?!'. It pissed me of that this kid was thinking so little of himself.
GOD! KID! HOW ABOUT COMMON SENSE?! OR SELF-PRESERVING?!
And before I knew it I had him restricted gently with one of my feathers. I didn't wanted to risk him running away with these kind of injuries. However before I got to the kid in the first place to carry him bridal style, he fell unconscious. Luckily, my feather was restricting him so he didn't hit the ground.
My eyes went wide once again and I rushed to the greenette side, took him and immediately flew away as fast as I can.
Don't you dare die on me here feathers!
