Chapter 1; Devotion

"Devotion"

"Her eyes sung stories with sad endings, I wanted to wrap her in a blanket and tell her she'd be safe forever, and so I did."          ~Atticus

"(Y/N), he's here. Are you ready yet?" Momo knocked on my bedroom door.

"Momo?" She opened my door and looked in. "What if he doesn't like me?" I looked out my window at the ocean.

"(Y/N), he likes you. He wouldn't be courting you if he didn't." She sighed. "Now let's get you to the castle docs. You look beautiful." She held out her hand and I stood walking with her hand in mine, comforting me.

"I'm worried." I looked at the stone floor of the hallway.

"Don't be so worried. I'm sure tonight's going to be amazing." She hooked her arm around my shoulders and pulled me into a side hug.

"Thanks. Wish me luck, I'll tell you about it later tonight." I gave her one last hug before walking out to the castle docs. I took a deep breath and looked up at the prince standing on the far side.

"You're finally here." He smirked turning around and bowing.

"I apologize for the wait. It's good to see you again, Katsuki." I bowed.

"Let's get on with this, shall we?" He stepped into the small boat and held out his hand for me to follow.

"Thank you." I smiled taking his hand and sitting on the opposite side of the boat.

"I should be thanking you for accepting my request." He chuckled. He seemed nervous which was special to me. His usual cocky attitude seemed to be gone, and only a nervous teenage boy on his first date stayed.

"Are you okay? You seem nervous." I laughed trying to lighten the mood.

"I'm fine. Your friend over there is what's making me nervous." He cleared his throat and pointed back to the docks. I looked over my shoulder and saw Momo glaring at the blonde. Her gaze and the way he was acting made me laugh and I looked over the side of the boat, putting my hand in the water as we waded along the river.

"Don't worry about Momo, she may be intimidating but she's just trying to protect me." I sighed.

She was with a boy. She was with a boy and laughing. She looked so beautiful in her (F/C) dress and with a big smile plastered on her face. When she put her hand in the water I moved without thinking and gently held her hand. Though I knew she couldn't feel it I just wanted to be near her. I stuck close to the boat making sure he didn't do anything to her. If he hurt her or so much as touched her I'd be able to save her. 'If I devote myself to her and my love is reciprocated, I might have a chance to live. I could have the chance at getting a soul.'

I watched as she had fun and talked with this boy. He could make her smile and I was getting jealous. I stayed hidden as much as possible but with each passing minute I felt the anger and rage build inside me. The last straw was when he leaned in and held her face. He was going to kiss her. Without thinking I pushed the boat with my tail and the wave created by the movement. I saw as they both fell into the water but only the boy went up. 'She can't swim. SHE CAN'T SWIM!' I mentally scolded myself.

I couldn't breathe. And I didn't know what was happening. I looked around but felt my body giving up. Before everything went black I saw what looked to be a boy swimming towards me. I took notice of his red and white hair but there was something else about him. Something I couldn't exactly pinpoint. I felt myself being pushed out of the water and onto the capsized boat. I gasped for air and clung to the wooden mass catching my breath.

"You're alright." Bakugou's voice came from behind me.

"What happened?!" I gasped.

"We capsized somehow." I felt his hand on my back. "Give me second I'm going to try to flip it back over." I nodded and pushed away trying the best I could to help him flip the boat again.

"I need to learn to swim." I said breathlessly chuckling.

"You don't-...how do you not know how to swim? You live near the ocean." He seemed dumbfounded.

"I hardly ever go near the water. And I've never been taught how." I explained squeezing the water out of my hair.

"Why not get one of your guards to teach you. It's not that hard." He seemed to be gaining his cocky mannerisms again. But there was more now. Almost like he was acting better than me, more rude than cocky.

"Why are you being so rude all of the sudden?" I looked into his dark eyes.

"I'm just trying to understand how you don't know how to swim." He sighed and started paddling the boat back to the docks.

"I never learned how. Get over it." I huffed looking back at the water seeing a red and white spotted tail moving under the boat. 'I must be losing my mind...' I sighed ignoring Bakugou.

"Well how wa- why are you wet?" Momo looked extremely worried.

"Nothing we just capsized. I'm fine." She helped me out and I left as soon as I could.

"Wait, (Y/N) where are you...going..." Her voice faded away as I escaped back to my room.

I locked myself in my room and quickly changed out of my soaked clothes. I fell back onto my bed and let the past hour's events process. Everything was so weird. I felt like there was something more to what happened. I stared at my ceiling taking deep breaths trying to calm down. I groaned and pulled my pillow over my face screaming with frustration before hugging it to my chest. I sat up and walked over to my window looking over the deep blue water. I couldn't get that red and white hair and tail out of my head. There was something going on and I wanted to know.

"(Y/N), can I come in?" Momo knocked on the door.

"Yeah." I sighed and fell back onto my bed.

"Talk to me. What happened?" She sat on the bed and waited for me to talk to her.

"It's just... I thought everything would be different." I sat up and crossed my legs hugging my pillow again. "Everything just went wrong. We were supposed to have fun and everything was going to be great, but after we capsized it's like...it's like something in him snapped. He acted better than me because I couldn't swim and he was just being a jerk." I shrugged.

"(Y/N), he's known to be a jerk sometimes. I'm sure it was just a spur of the moment thing." She put her hand on my shoulder. "I'm sure he was just like that because his plan got messed up." She smiled.

"Yeah." I laughed. "Thanks, Momo." I held my arms open and she gave me a quick hug.

"I have work to do. You try and get some rest, okay?" She stood up and walked to the door. I nodded and she closed my door leaving me in silence.

A/N: Huge thanks to @pastelcandy_wolf for helping me write this chapter. I couldn't have done this without you! "Sirens are linked to the ocean, they are apart of it and they try to get humans to get into the water to be killed, but if you are talking about sirens in the coastline they want to find love in humans to gain souls. He IS the ocean to humans unless he devotes himself to her, to acquiring her love." Here's the logic I'm going off of. She knows a lot about mermaids and I know nothing. So I'm using her knowledge on them for this entire book. Also the moment when he flips the boat is when he fully commits. He's now devoted, that's why M/C was able to see him. Anyways, thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed. Have a good day/night, drink water, eat food, get sleep. You're amazing and I love you. Bye my lovelies!
