Siren's call |Chapter Eighteen|
Pulling out a dress bag that contains his period wear for Drake on the starting day of Treason Days, Kade crosses their hotel room up in Ravenswood and grabs his phone off the desk when it dings with an incoming text.
"Of course he is," Kade shakes his head.
Returning to getting ready, Kade puts on a pair of black trousers and a thick leather belt. Once it's all properly in place and able to hold his knife and cutlasses, he throws on a silken marron period shirt. Most associate with pirates and leaves half of it undone before he tucks it into his breeches. Sitting on the bed, he pulls his black calf-high boots on, then stands and slides on a black jacket he'll be cursing in an hour with how thick it is. Finally, he throws a shoulder strap over and grabs his cutlasses in their bag. With everything he needs and his hair left wild and unbrushed, he grabs the box her crown's in from where she left it on the desk and heads off to the harbor. When he finally arrives, he parks and heads to the sleek blue ship with an orange stripe he's seen a hundred times, the Devil's Sapphire.
Moving to the gangplank, Kade goes to head up it, only to have the brawny man from the Wasted Haven step in front of him. "Sorry, lad, tours are closed taday."
"Funny." Kade moves to step around him, only to have the man counter him. Irritation crosses Kade's face. "Oi ye fuckin' Crazy Irishmen!" He hollers loudly as his attention turns to the deck of the Devil's Sapphire. "Get yer man off me so I can see the damn siren you're hiding meself!"
It doesn't take long before Angus comes into view from up on the quarterdeck. A grin spreads across his face as he leans against the railing. "Move yer arse, Blaine. Can't ye see it's me mate, Drake!"
"That's Captain Brovern, and I ain't yer mate!" Kade hollers back, making himself sound more British since his ancestor was.
"Aye, and I!" Angus stands up proudly, puffing his chest out and placing his fist on his hips. "Am Captain Orion 'Ta Silver Tounge' Davelvon! Slayer of Ta seven seas and women everywhere." Angus' head jerks forward as his wife comes up behind him, slapping some sense into the man. "Ow, feck, woman." He rubs the back of his head and glares back at her.
"Pretty sure ye mean the Devil's spawn," Kade counters as he pushes past Blaine and strides up the gangplank. "And the only one good with the ladies around here is me." He grins as he steps aboard the Devil's Sapphire. "Now where's me Treasure?" Kade demands, returning to his regular voice since there's no one to show off for on deck.
"Brody's drownin' her off ta bow of ta ship." Angus points to the front of the Sapphire.
"You better be joking. " Kade's expression darkens as he strides towards the front of the ship, just to make sure. The damn Irishman's just crazy enough to allow it.
"Damn it, Brody, yer fuckin' hurtin' me!" Truly bitching at her brother filters over the bow on the ship.
"Stop feckin' gripin' or I'll drop ye."
"Yer diggin' inta me-" A shriek from Truly cuts through the air before it's followed by a loud splash.
Oh, drown me in the deep. Kade's stomach drops at the sound as his pace quicks. Don't have dropped her overboard, ye damn fool. She won't be able to swim with a tail covering her legs. It takes practice to pull that off.
"Treasure!" A hint of urgency fills his voice as he rushes to the edge of the bow and slaps his hand against the railing as his gaze drops over to the bowsprit, intent on leaping over if need be.
To his relief, Truly is swimming in a deep pool built into the bowsprit. She rights herself in the water with her long pearly white tail, before breaking the surface of the water to glare up at Brody, who's still hanging off the ladder he was climbing down with her. A stern, unamused scowl still plastered on his face.
"Ye feckin' dropped me!" Truly snaps up at him.
"I warned ye." Brody sticks his snobby nose in the air before he turns a gaze up to Kade. Out of all of Truly's brothers, Brody looks the most like Truly, with the same grey eyes, rounded chin, and elfin-like nose.
Truly's gaze follows her brother's, her eyes instantly lightening when she sees Kade. With amazing ease, Truly glides through the water and pulls herself up on the edge of the pool. From his view, Kade can see her tail shimmering in the light in hues of white and light pinks. A long dorsal fin waves in the water and tapers off to a wide fluke that has white and pink fringe hanging off it. The prosthetic looks amazingly real from his height and the pearls they'd added to her skin make the effect spread seamlessly up to her upper body.
"Ye made it! Did ye bring me bloody crown?"
"Aye." Reaching in the satchel at his hip, Kade pulls out her intricate shelled crown and lifts it up to show her before he moves to the ladder and drops his gaze down at Brody. "Ye mind?"
"I do." Brody makes his way up the ladder. "I'll give it ta her." He holds his thin hand out for the crown.
Kade's expression turns stern, looking like a ruthless pirate that just stepped out of history and onto the ship's deck. "I'll hand me own damn wife her crown, now move."
"Give me ta feckin' crown, Brovern." Brody growls out, his scowl deepening as he steps another rung up.
"Watch your mouth," Kade's free hand naturally falls upon the handle of his cutlass, "or I'll drop ya like you did me Treasure."
Behind him, Angus comes up and plucks the crown out of Kade's hand and gives it to Brody. "And ye wonder why people call ye a feckin' prick," Angus glares down at his nephew.
While Brody goes back down to hand his sister her crown, Angus turns to Kade. "Don't take it personal, t'at boy was born ta be a pain in everyone's arse. Besides, it's protocol not ta let anyone down in ta pool except ta siren and her handler."
At the term, Kade's eyes narrow and he cuts the man an unamused glare. "She's not a bloody specimen, she's my wife." He grinds out.
A smile spreads across Angus' face. "Aye, lad, she is. Why don't ye sail with Blaine in the family's schooner? He keeps it pretty tight ta t'e ship. Ye'll be able ta keep yer eyes on yer pretty lass the entire time."
Kade's eyes drop to Truly as she places the crown upon her head. "You mean the blaggard blocking the gangplank?"
"Aye." Angus chuckles. "It's t'at or ta shore. Now get off me ship. We're castin' off."
"Are ye going ta ride with Blaine?!" Truly calls up from below, back on her perch. Her tail seems to excitedly move with a natural ease in the water.
Next to her, Brody thumps the side of her head, earning him a glare from his sister, before he leans over and whispers something to her, causing her to still.
The hand upon the Kraken's hilt tightens as Kade's muscles tense in displeasure. Do that again, and it'll be the back of this cutlass that knocks your bloody skull, ye fucker.
"Brody!" Angus hollers down. "Get yer scrawny arse up here already. Ye gave her her bloody crown. Quit pickin' on ye sista."
"I ain't pickin'." Brody climbs up the ladder and pulls himself over the railing. "Move," he barks out to Kade.
Not liking his tone, Kade's eyes narrow as he takes a step back, barely giving the little shit the room he needs. After he passes by, his attention drops to Truly beneath in her pool, and a feeling of awe overtakes him. "Ye alright, my Treasure?"
"Aye!" She smiles up at him. Truly lowers down in the pool, submerging her mouth and nose for a moment before floating on her back. "As good as gold."
Enamoured by her beauty, Kade swallows. "You're mesmerizing, Truly."
"Aye?" Truly bites her lips as her gaze runs over the parts she can see. "Ye ain't so bad, ye self pirate. I like ta get up."
His cognac eyes lighten with a bit of mirth as they land on her shelled bra. "I see you finally found your shells."
"Aye," Truly giggles as she glances down at her white clam shell top. "Do ye like it?"
"Aye," Kade's eyes heat as his gaze slide over her. "And I'll happily help ye take it off later." His lip curls as a deep blush flushes over her.
"T'at's enough of t'at kinda talk." Angus shoves him. "Off me ship."
"Yeah, yeah," Kade reluctantly pushes away from the railing, the hold she had upon him momentarily broken by the insistent Irishman behind him. "Do me a favor and haul her out yerself later, don't let the blaggard do it or the back of my cutlass might accidentally find his skull."
"I'm here!" Finn comes huffing up the gangplank with fresh lipstick smeared on his neck.
"Aye, twenty minutes too late, ye little shite. Tru's already in ta pool." Angus crosses his arms over his chest. "Ye were supposed ta be her handler. I had ta find some else."
Finn's eyes go wide as they shift from his uncle to Kade as he leaves the ladder leading down. "Who put her in?!"
"Ye should've been here ta find out." Angus shoots him a glare before heading back up to the quarterdeck. "Blaine!" He shouts down. "Take ta Captain with ye on the Rossi."
"Aye aye," Blaine calls up to his uncle as Kade steps down next to him on the dock. "Mind helpin' me with ta gangplank?" He nods to the ramp leading up to the Sapphire. "T'en well cast off ourselves."
With a nod, Kade helps him maneuver it back up with the help of the crew.
Blaine walks off with Kade next to him. "So yer ta husband t'at don't like me?" A smirk slides across Blaine's face as they pass the bow of the ship where Truly is gliding through the water, flipping and spinning effortlessly.
"Aye, and yer the ass who was getting handsy with her in the pub."
"Handsy?" Blaine raises a brow at him before he glances up at Tru who has stopped her fun to wave at them under the water. "I ain't ever gettin' handsy with t'at one. I'm nine years olda t'an her. I use ta give her piggy back rides when she was little. She's like a sista ta me. I weren't gettin' handsy."
Raising a hand back to her, Kade scoffs. "Bollox, I sent Kill after ye cause of it."
Blaine chuckles and shakes his head. "Sure, mate."
In front of the Sapphire sits a much smaller schooner that looks like a mini Devil's Sapphire. Blaine gestures to the boat. "Welcome aboard ta Rossi. Named after our Nan."
"After you, Captain." Kade nods for him to go first, as is custom.
Blaine boards the boat just as a young blonde woman covered in tattoos from the neck down comes up from the hull of the boat carrying a tiny baby in her arms. When Kade follows him on, Blaine wraps an arm around the woman. "Kade, t'is is me wife, Kendra. Kenni, t'is is the blaggard t'at stole our pearl."
"Oh, aye?" Kendra's eyes glisten with mischief. "Nice ta meet ye." She shifts the baby in her arms to hold out a hand to him.
"Ma'am," taking her hand, Kade kisses the top of it. "Kade Petrovich Brovern, at yer service."
"Ooo." Kendra glances over at her husband. "A gentleman. Ye should take lessons."
Blaine scoffs as he takes his place behind the helm. "Ye knew what ye where gettin' into when ye married me."
Kade's eyes drop to the child in her arms. "I see congratulations are in order. How old is the lad?"
"Jist over a month now." Kendra's attention drops to the small baby in her arms.
Kade does the math back in his head, "Around the time of that big storm, when we were hand fasted then."
"Aye, a week before. Me husband left me all alone with a week old babe ta go out drinkin'." She playfully glares at Blaine.
"Ye let me, and ye know it." He counters her glare with one of his own, before hollering down into the haul for someone to get their asses on deck so they can ship off.
It isn't long before two younger men come up with the same muscular build as Blaine, and like him, both are covered in tattoos.
"We'll have ta make quick introductions. Uncle Angus is gonna start bitchin' at me if I don't get out of he's damn way." Blaine points to the older of the two, "T'is is Colby, me middle brotha, and Alifie," he points to the one with light brown hair around Kade's age. "Ta baby."
Alfie flicks Blaine off before helping untie the ropes and pushes off.
"Kade Petrovick," his eyes flick to Blaine. "Do ye want me ta help, or just stay out of the way."
"Ye know what yer doin'." Blaine nods to the main sails. "Help t'em with ta sails?"
"Aye, aye." Moving to the rigging, Kade swiftly climbs it, showing his natural ease upon a ship as he scurries up to unfurrow the canvas.
It isn't long before they catch the wind and the Devil's Sapphire comes up next to them. Despite the wake the Sapphire creates, Blaine holds true to his uncle's words and hugs close to the Sapphire.
"Ye really do look like t'at Drake fella, don't ye?" Alfie shouts over the sound of the crashing wake.
Alive with the rush of the sea breeze in his face and the yawing of the ship beneath him, Kade turns to look at him as he raises a brow. "I am Drake, haven't ye heard?" He grins.
"A bit old for me cousin t'en, ain't ye?" Alfie snorts, turning his face to let the ocean spray hit him in the face.
"Eh," Kade shrugs as he throws him a playful look. "What's a few hundred years? And yer forgetting that small fine print that says the incarnation of. I'm only twenty."
"Oh, aye? Is t'at what t'ey say?" Alfie raises a brow. "It's fittin'. Tru's supposed ta be reborn too. She's-"
"Alfie!" Colby cuts the younger lad off with a stern look. "Mind the mainsail."
Alfie nods and taps the side rail with his hand before doing what his older brother says.
"Of who?" Kade's eyes drift to his Treasure as she sails beside them, his hand naturally catching the rough rope of the ladder as it swings beside him.
A reluctant look passes over Colby's face as his gaze shifts from Kade to Truly. "Of Amphitrite."
Unable to look away from her, Kade's brows lightly furrow. "The sea queen?"
"Aye, ta sea queen."
"Even if I believed in that rubbish, ye can't be a myth reborn. There's no scientific proof to support sirens ever existed." The sun glints off Kade's Kraken ruby, making it glow and warm against his chest for a moment, as he stares at his wife pretending to be just that. "I've spent years in the sea, grew up swimming in Rum Runner's bay, where they supposedly live, before I started exploring the rest of the surrounding waters. I'd have seen one by now."
"Aye," Colby chuckles. Ashis gaze turns to Truly. "Hard ta see what ye don't believe in."
"Oi, Tru!" a crewman on the Sapphire calls out loud enough for them to hear. "Give us a little ditty."
Happy to oblige her kinfolk, Truly pulls herself up on the ledge. "Come me luv our world's would part. The gods will guide us across the dark." Truly wraps a loose rope around her wrist to help steady herself before glancing down at Kade. "Come with me and be mine, me luv. If ye stay, ye'll break me heart. From the shores through the ancient mist. Ye bear the mark of me siren kiss."
Lost in her words, Kade's hand drops from the ladder as the desire to go to her fills him. Truly... Upon his neck, the Kraken's tear pulses and flares against his bare skin in warning as his feet move on their own accord towards her, bringing him closer to the railing.
"Swim with me. Have a look around. Make a life with me in the depths of me deep lagoon. Come my luv, from your world depart."
"Ye alright, lad?" Colby frowns as he steps up next to him.
"Aye, grand," Kade distractedly replies, his attention completely locked on her as he puts a boot up on the backside of the rail with the clear intent to hoist himself up and over.
"Feck, Alfie!" Colby shouts as he grabs hold of Kade, jerking him back while Truly keeps singing.
Alfie comes running over to find Colby struggling with Kade in a bear hug. The boy's eyes completely glassed over. "Shut her up!" he yells over the side, catching the attention of one of his family members on the Sapphire.
The first to notice the struggle on the Rossi, Brody barks for her to stop singing as he quickly throws his legs over to climb down to the pool. "Shut it!"
Once he's in the water, he swims over and grabs hold of her tail and yanks her under, cutting her song off as her head dips beneath the water.
Aboard the Rossi, Kade jerks his arms as he fights, attempting to gain access to his swords as he leans his body forward, using his full weight against Colby. "Let me go!"
"Not a chance, lad." Colby's grip tightens as Alfie takes Kade's cutlasses, aware he's trying to go for them.
In their scuffle, Colby and Kade fall to the deck.
"Let it pass, lad." Kendra tells him, as she casts a worried look up to her husband, who's already pulling away from the Sapphire. "Jist a few more minutes. It'll pass."
"No!" Kade growls out in frustration as he realizes what Blaine's doing. "Don't ye dare! I have a right ta go to her! She's me wife!" As the Sapphire gets farther away, a string of Russian curses falls from his lips as he fights against Colby and Alfie to get to her.
Kendra frowns, aware most would be free by now, but he isn't getting better. "By t'unda, how much has she sang ta him?!" Her gaze flicks up to her husband.
Ignoring her, Kade fights in earnest. "Get off me, ye bastard!" Jerking his right arm free, Kade pulls it back and decks Colby a good one.
Alfie's lips thin as he watches Kade pull his arm back again. Stepping forward, he flips his grip on one of the cutlasses, earning a murderous glare from his brother. Don't you bloody dare do that and end up nailing me. Just punch the bastard. I know you're strong enough ta do it, twig, it seems to say.
Alfie drops the cutlasses as he strides over and pulls his own arm back. Twisting so he puts all his weight behind it, he punches Kade in the jaw, knocking the man out cold.
As the feeling of pressure in his head and stiffness all over registers, Kade shifts, and groans. What the fuck happened? Ooh, send me to the deep if me head doesn't do it first. The movement of a ship and the salt in the air tells him he's at sea, even before his eyes slowly open and he blinks, finding himself within the belly of a wooden ship he doesn't recognize.
"Sleepin' Beauty's awake, and lookin' like shite." A voice yells out, filling the hull Kade was lugged down into.
"What in the nine hells is going on?!" Kade snaps then cringes, thanks to the sound of his own deep voice. "Uh," he groans, reaching up to touch his head. "I shouldn't have done that."
"Aye," Alfie agrees. "Ye shouldn't have. Best ta keep quiet till we dock."
Dock? "Dock where?" A sense of unease fills him. He only has a vague memory of this man, but he can't quite place him. The pressure in his head isn't helping either, neither is the way his body aches as if he's been on a week binger. What the bloody hell happened to me?
"In Rum Runna's Cove." Alfie tsks. "She did a numba on ye."
Who did? Kade lifts his head, only to put it back on whatever they've placed him on. I remember being on the Sapphire and that git dropping me Treasure. Then I met that lass and her child, but after that...
"Shut it, Alfie!" Colby calls from above. "Leave t'e fecker alone and get yer arse up here and help us tie down."
Alfie rolls his eyes, and pushes off the pine wall he's leaning against, before jogging up the stairs to the deck.
Several minutes later, Truly anxiously boards the Rossi with her father. While Shane talks to his three nephews, Truly makes her way down into the haul of the boat.
On a deep blue cushioned bench, Kade lays with his eyes closed. Now changed out of her tail and into a long flowing white chiffon skirt, the slits all the way up to the low waist band. Decorated in shells, gold, and pearls, Truly looks like a sea princess risen from the deep.
"Kade?" she softly whispers. "Ye alright?" As she approaches the bench, her shell anklet rattles.
"Treasure?" Kade's eyes flutter open before they widen at the sight of her. By god, she's a sight.
Truly takes a seat next to him, and frowns when she notices the bruise along his jawline. "Ye, got walloped a good one. Ye hurtin'?"
"My head is killin' me and my body's aching." He reluctantly sits up, placing an arm on the bench to steady himself as he does so.
"Easy." Truly grips his shoulders to steady him.
"What happened?" Kade leans against her, his eyes partially open because even the light in the hull feels too bright for them.
Truly nibbles on her lip as she watches him. "Ye fell privy ta me siren song." What seems like a look of guilt passes over her face.
A soft chuckle escapes his lips as he leans his head against her shoulder and breathes her in. A bit of the tension in his body easing as he does so. "Funny." A vague image of watching her sing does come to mind. He'd been watching her sing. Then the world got fuzzy and... I can't remember the rest. "What really happened, Treasure?"
"Blaine got to close ta the Sapphire," Shane's voice proceeds him as he steps down into the hull. "He hit a swell and rocked ta ship. The hard jolt threw ye and knocked ye in ta de mast." Shane steps up next to them, glancing at his daughter, before it returns to Kade. "Ye took a good hit. Ye'll need ta take it easy taday."
A light frown crosses Kade's lips. I don't remember that. If anything, a nagging feeling Blaine got too far, not close, tugs at the back of his mind. "The others? His wife was holding a babe."
"T'ey're fine. T'ey're used ta his sailing and know when ta brace."
Truly frowns up at her dad, but stays quiet as she wraps her arms around Kade.
"I take it I was out awhile if yer both here." We'd only just set sail. Damn, I missed seein' her do her event. Rum Runners might just be a cove, but it's not a small one, and he'd hope to see her entertain the crowds. She was looking forward to it. Kade's eyes run over her bare legs as his fingers instinctively reach out to touch them. "I wanted to see more of you that way," he breathes against her neck. "I'm sorry I missed it, Treasure." He places a light kiss on her neck.
A look of concern falls on Shane's face as he gives her a scathing look.
"It's alright. I didn't do much more afta t'at." She runs her hand up and down his back. "I was too worried about ye. Ye've been in and out of it for a few hours," Truly tells him. "It's jist a little afta lunch."
"Fuck," Kade sits up as his hand automatically moves to where his back pockets would typically be, only to inwardly curse his outfit. Pulling his phone out from his inner breast pocket, he finds several missed calls from his omma and a few texts from Raven. "I was supposed to meet me family for lunch. I need ta call my Omma and tell her... something." His killer headache isn't doing him any favors when it comes to ideas. "I'm gonna head up topside to call her. I'll be back." He gives her a chaste kiss and reluctantly stands, taking a moment to find his balance before he heads up, his phone already lifting to his ear as a hint of another language fills the air before he disappears from view.
"I'm sorry, mother," Kade replies in Korean as he moves to the bow of the ship and leans against the foremast. "No, it had nothin' ta do with me father. I was on one of the performing boats and it hit some bad wake." Disliking the bright light, Kade closes his eyes. "It caught me off guard and I pitched back into the mainmast."
"Are you hurt? I will come and take care of you. Tell me where you are and Raven will get me there."
Seeing Kade's mother's visible reaction since he doesn't speak Korean, Raven's voice lightly comes across the line. "Something happen tuh fish bait?"
"I'm fine mother, just tell him I'm fine."
"Are you fine?" His mother demands. An edge of motherly doubt fills her voice.
Kade sighs. "I will be. I cracked me skull hard enough to knock myself out for a spell. I just need ta take it easy for a few hours so I'll likely just go rest."
"I will take care of you." In his mind, he can see her stubbornly nod to herself.
"Mom, no. I'll be fine. You love these days, they let you see them the most. Have Raven or Ghedi take you to see Draken and Brycen's duels. If father gets in the way, let Mama Adébáyọ̀s deal with him."
"I do not like the idea of you alone. What if you have a concussion? Who will make sure you stay awake? Who will care for you?" She demands, already in one of her full mothery modes.
"I'm not alone, mom. I'll be fine." Hearing a raised voice from below, Kade's eyes open and he frowns. "I need ta go, mom. I have to check on somethin'."
"You have to rest," she counters. "Being born the return of Drake does not mean it must always fall to you. Let another go, Kade."
Kade sighs. "This time it does. I have to go, mom. I love you." Not giving her time to argue, he hangs up and makes his way back down below.
"Daddy, I didn't mean to." Tears pour down Truly's cheeks.
Shane's look doesn't soften. In fact, it only grows sterner. "Yer diggin' yer own grave, lass! And if ye ain't careful, his too!" He throws his hand to the stairs leading up to the deck, just as Kade's black boots appear.
Having caught the end of his words, Kade's expression turns stern and it only hardens when he sees her tear-stained face. "What in the seven hells is going on?"
"Nothin'." Truly wipes the tears from her freckled cheeks. She pushes up from the bench. "Are ye leavin'?"
Kade's hand goes to rest on his cutlass's handle, only to realize it's missing as he lets his hand fall. "No, and you're crying, it's not nothing." Striding down the stairs, Kade's eyes turn accusingly to her father. "What exactly did you say to make me Treasure cry?"
Shane ignores the boy and leans over to kiss the top of his daughter's head. "I luv ye, Pearl, jist remember who ye are." He cups the side of her face before dropping his hand and heading for the stairs. "Enjoy t'e festival." With that, Shane jogs up the steps, leaving the two of them alone.
Truly wraps her arms around herself.
Instantly moving to her, Kade pulls her into him. "Relax, Treasure. I'm not going anywhere, much less me grave by your hand."
Truly wraps her arms around him. "Give me time. I apparently am capable of annoyin' people ta death."
"That's Killian, not you," Kade shakes his head before his head dips down to steal her lips. When he finally pulls away, his eyes scan the room. "Do ye know where they put my cutlasses? They're gone."
"I t'ink Alfie was paradin' it around on his hip." Truly giggles when an irritated look passes over his face. "I'm kiddin'. T'ey tucked it away up on de deck." Truly takes his hand and leads him up to the deck to a helm where Blaine had been keeping it safe.
At the sight of his swords, Kade picks them up and returns them to their proper place upon his belt before he takes her hand. "I told my omma what happened, and I'd rest, but I'm starving and I assume ye are too."
"Aye. Do ye want ta rest here and I'll go find us somet'in' ta eat?" Her eyes drop to his slightly swollen chin. "The movement of ta water always helps me relax."
Kade raises a brow as he pulls away and runs his eyes over her. "And let someone try to touch all that?" His eyes heat as they slide over her top and down to her exposed leg. "Not a chance in hell."
Truly's cheeks turn pink. "If t'ey try, t'en t'ey'll get a knee ta de jewels. Ta only one t'at touches me is ye."
"Aye." Kade agrees, stealing her lips, and his hand slides down to cup her ass.
