Chapter 65

“It’s no secret that there have been multiple attacks in this town recently - one in this school today,” Alaric said. Everyone sat in chairs along tables that had gargoyle remains showered on them mere hours ago, watching him intently. “You may have noticed that your headmistress has been absent. She’s been out trying to find the answers that I - and I’m sure all of you - desperately want. Her presence here will be spotty for a bit. I’m sure you’ll all miss her, but she will return.”
Josie stared at him impatiently, wishing his speech would end already, but Lizzie dropped her gaze. Her mom had only been gone a while, but Lizzie missed her more than she thought she would.
“In the meantime, the remaining staff here is fully equipped to support you in any way you need. In the spirit of transparency, a student was attacked today. Several of the world’s most advanced safety spells have been added to the school’s protection wards - spells that should’ve been there in the first place. There’s no guarantee that another monster won’t sneak onto campus. There’s no guarantee any of you are safer here than you would be in your own homes.” Alaric’s eyes fell on Hope. “But for some of you - a lot of you - this is your home.” He looked to his daughters. “We intend to make it as safe as possible. We also intend for you to have every say in how you’re protected. To do this, the honor council will be taking on more responsibility. They’ll be tasked with representing your concerns and advocating for your choices.”
Alaric stepped forward, walking between the tables as he continued speaking.
“Know that we won’t let these recent monster attacks control us. We will continue as normal, with added precautions. Classes will go on, dances aren’t canceled, more community activities are still being planned.” He took a deep breath. “Any questions?”
