Chapter 63

Josie sat at her sister’s bedside - well, couchside - and set her hand on Lizzie’s wound. She could feel the magic in there, only a touch. It seemed most of the toxin was something more scientific, and siphoning it was a breeze.
Jade stood outside the door where Josie demanded she wait while she saved her twin’s life, impatiently urging the minutes to pass.
When Josie came back out, she gave Jade a wide, fake smile. “It’s done.”
“You saved her, right?” Jade countered snarkily. “Not killed her?”
“Yes, I saved her.” Josie narrowed her eyes. “So you’re welcome. I risked my life so you can keep having your only friend around.”
Thanks.” Jade didn’t get to say more before Alaric came hurrying down the hall with the potion bottle in his hand.
“Did you siphon it already?” Alaric asked, out of breath, not so much from the hurrying but more from the nerves.
“Yeah.” Josie nodded. “It was -” She glanced over at Jade and swallowed heavily. “It was a lot, but I got it done.”
“Thank you.” Alaric kissed her forehead and rushed into the little room. Jade and Josie followed, watching as he poured the potion into Lizzie’s mouth. She coughed a little as she finished, but she was already moving enough to sit up the tiniest fraction of an inch. “Oh thank god.” Alaric pulled her into a hug and Jade was quick to join on the other side.
“What was in that?” Lizzie sputtered in disgust, wiping at her lips.
Alaric laughed. “You don’t want to know."
